The Junior Class Dinner is  Tues, Feb 27 at 6 pm in the LHS Cafeteria. We are looking for parents, students or other family members to help with check-in, setup and clean-up. Please lend a hand by signing up here. Student Service's College Planning Night for juniors and parents will start at 7 pm (no tickets are required for this portion of the evening). sophomores
Save the date! Our final Sophomore Parent Forum is  Fri, April 20, 9:30 to 11 am, at St. John's Episcopal Church,  6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean VA 22101. Join us for Sophomore-specific updates on all aspects of Langley. We are thrilled to have a licensed clinical social worker join us to share the latest research on 16-year-olds. She also will be providing discrete tips for sophomore parents to effectively support their sophomores in the next few years.

a message from the principal
I know the tragedy in Florida is still fresh in everyone's minds. I cannot imagine a more traumatic or life-changing event than what occurred in Parkland. I am writing to assure you that we are doing all we can to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff. We have recently completed our infrastructure to enable us to lock all the exterior doors of the school. This will be a significant, but necessary, culture shift for our school community. You can no longer just enter school. You will have to ring the bell and give a reason for your presence. If you want to visit, you will have to scan your license into the reader in the main office. While these security procedures are a drastic shift from our past, they are a good thing for everyone.  

For safety reasons, we do not discuss most of our security procedures and practices. We do have regular trainings and discussions about our protocols. The FCPS safety and security staff is quite good and they are currently reviewing all of the school system's policies. I can tell you that at Langley, we treat all threats or concerns seriously. We involve our teachers, administrative team, mental health professionals, school counselors, and law enforcement in any situation that causes concern. If, at any time, you have questions or concerns of your own, you just need to contact us.   

Below are some links from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). These links can help you navigate this situation with your child. If you ever have concerns about your child or another child, please don't hesitate to reach out to our staff.
In these difficult times, it is imperative that we communicate with each other. We must always remember that we are a living, breathing community that functions best when we are all working together.

Our snowed-out January Principal's Coffee/PTSA meeting has been rescheduled  for Wed, Feb, 28 at 9 am . We were happy to be able to coordinate this new date with our featured speaker, Dr. Heather Tedesco, so we can hear her presentation on  "Talking To Your Teens About the Tough Stuff."
senior ethics forum - more adult volunteers needed!
This year our Senior Ethics Forum will be held on Tues, Mar 13 from 8:15 am to 2:45 pm and we need adult volunteers!

What is the LHS Senior Forum?
Seniors rotate through modules where an ethical dilemma is presented, followed by small or large group discussions. We need volunteer table leaders to work with groups of 8 students to facilitate small group discussion in each module. A brief training session for table leaders is provided.

Why should I volunteer at a Senior Forum?
Since we all know that our kids talk and listen more when their parents aren't around, senior parents, teachers and school staff do not serve in this capacity, so we need parents of underclassmen or adults outside of the Langley parent community.

We have table leaders who return year after year and truly value spending the day with Langley seniors. Don't miss the opportunity to participate in this important program.

The PTSA's Hospitality Committee treated Langley's fabulous faculty to a winter luncheon featuring food from Brio and homemade baked goods from Langley parents. "The Olympic theme was a huge hit," said Principal Amico. "These luncheons are a great morale booster for the entire staff."  

Thanks to all of you who made the luncheon possible by contributing to the PTSA this year. Special thanks to Clare Bradshaw, Hospitality Committee Chair, for organizing the event, to the talented Langley bakers, and to the entire Hospitality Committee.  
got poetry?
Langley's National English Honors Society is hosting a school-wide poetry slam on  Feb 28, after school at 3:15 pm in the Lecture Hall. Slam Poetry is a form of performative poetry in which people read or recite poetry, often dramatically, with the purpose of making their voices heard. Students can submit their poetry through their English teacher's blackboard to Ms. Chern or via the QR flyers posted throughout the school.

Saxons, did you know . . . According to the 2016-17 FCPS Youth Survey, 55.5% of Langley seniors report texting/emailing while driving.

Saxons, did you know? gives an important piece of info on drugs, alcohol or mental wellness. We hope these messages serve as conversation starters about substance use, stress and decision making with your teen and family.

On Feb 26 at 7 pm the McLean Citizens Association (MCA) is hosting a meeting for the public to meet and ask questions of the new FCPS Superintendent, Dr. Scott Braband. He will discuss his priorities and challenges. The event will take place at the Franklin Sherman Elementary School Cafeteria,  6633 Brawner St., McLean . Questions? swim & dive: Congratulations to the men's swim team for WINNING THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET!! The men's team had an amazing season, undefeated regular season, 4th straight conference title, excellent second place finish in a highly competitive region meet, and now a landslide 50 point victory at the state meet! The team's hard work and dedication paid off all season long and this victory is very much deserved.  Congrats again!

girls basketball: Last Fri, the Varsity girls defended their District title, winning their third straight Liberty District Championship.  They will be back in action this week as Langley hosts a regional quarterfinal game. Also, congratulations to Jordyn Callahan for being named the co-Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for the District. Congratulations to Rana Azad for making Second Team and Hallie Jepsen for making Honorable Mention.
