What a Catholic Schools Week!  The students enjoyed a great mix of fun and learning, especially today with our "Pajama Day" and "Get Up and Move" activity.  Our thanks go out to everyone who contributed to the success of this week's festivities. Our SMA mission truly shined this week!

Looking forward to our last Catholic Schools Week event, the Pasta Supper on Saturday evening. We will be pulling our calendar and basket raffle winners at the dinner.  Best of luck of everyone.

Hope to see you there!

PreK-3 Celebrates CSW

This week the PreK-3 students joined their fellow students at SMA, as well as Catholic School students around the country, in celebrating Catholic Schools Week.

The PreK-3 students started their very first CSW by coloring thank you pictures for parish priests as well as for past and present SMA donors and benefactors who help in keeping SMA a viable option for our school families.  The children also made angels to be used as table decorations for the "Warm Winter Wishes" reception held in the school cafeteria.
The highlight of PreK-3's week happened on Wednesday morning! With the help of their big buddies in Mrs. Bedore's 6th grade class, the children made valentines for soldiers serving our country.  It was a true team effort!  The big buddies wrote and cut while the little buddies colored and glued.  The completed valentines were beautiful!

On Wednesday afternoon, we joined the school community at Mass to celebrate the Feast of St. John Bosco, who is the patron saint of school children.

Thursday was a treat for the teachers! Miss Clark and I would like to thank all the families who contributed to the delicious luncheon!  A huge and special shout out goes to Mrs. Lund, SMA's Advancement Director, for covering our recess and lunch duties and keeping a watchful eye on the PreK-3 class while we enjoyed lunch with our fellow teachers!
Friday was such a fun day for the students!  They were able to wear their pajamas to school and take dance breaks throughout the day with the entire school community!

As you can see, PreK-3 had a fun and busy Catholic Schools Week.  Hopefully, it is just the first of many memorable CSW for these PreK-3 students!

Catholic Schools Week

What A Great Catholic Schools Week!

What a great week and it's not over yet! We started the week with our Family Heritage Celebration, wrote letters of thanks to our priests and donors, made Valentine's cards for our troops, celebrated Mass together, treated the faculty and staff to a fantastic lunch and had student appreciation day today. We were able to come to school in our pjs or sweats and then every time we heard music, we had to drop everything and dance!

Here are just a few photos from the week.  Visit the website by clicking here to see many more photos!

 6th Grade Literature

Caring For God's Creatures

As part of their literature unit about caring for others, the sixth graders were treated to a presentation from Mrs. Kelly, a volunteer and special event coordinator at Thomas J. O'Connor animal shelter in Springfield.  She answered many questions from the students about the dogs and cats who have been adopted from the shelter and took them through the steps involved with the process of animal control, from the capture, care, and then finally adoption.  The students shared stories about their own pets and learned about adopting one of their own.

Nurse's Office

Update On The Flu

CDC has now warned that this flu season could be the deadliest ever for kids (37 deaths reported thus far), and data is showing that about 5% of people in this country could be sick with the flu right now.  At schools and in the home, the flu can spread very quickly. Here at the school we are taking all necessary precautions to keep everyone safe and healthy - requiring those who are ill to stay home, encouraging frequent hand washing and covering of coughs/sneezes, and disinfecting all shared surfaces. We have had a few reports of students testing positive for Influenza. In most of these instances, the student had a close relative who was actively battling the flu at the time of diagnosis.

Please closely monitor your child for flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, congestion, chills, body aches, and headache, and, if present, please keep him/her home until fever free for 24 hours and feeling well. Please be in contact with your child's pediatrician to see if antiviral therapy may be appropriate. Make sure your child stays well hydrated and well rested. If your child develops shortness of breath, labored breathing, increasing lethargy, or any color changes - a blue tone to the skin, call 911 or take your child to the emergency room immediately.
Flu vaccines are still considered to be the best defense against the flu, and given that the flu virus will continue to be active for at least another 2 - 3 more months, there is still time to get vaccinated.

Children experiencing fever (100.4 degrees or greater), vomiting, severe cough, persistent diarrhea, and/or flu-like symptoms must stay out of school for at least 24 hours after symptoms have resolved (and not on fever-reducing medications). If your child develops any of these symptoms during the school day he/she will be sent home. Thank you for your commitment to a safe and healthy school environment.
