February 2018

Dear Concordia Alumna/us,

February presents an interesting collision of two starkly different events, although the heart of each one is love. On February 14th, many will be celebrating love with valentines, chocolate, flowers, and maybe a fancy dinner. We have a love that transcends earthly bounds that we will be celebrating in our churches that evening as Valentine's Day is also Ash Wednesday. As we enter the season of Lent this month, remember the One who loves you so much that He gave Himself for you.

In His Service,

Men's Basketball Wins 67th Annual Concordia Invitational Tournament

It was a weekend that won't soon be forgotten for students and fans of the Concordia University Ann Arbor Cardinals.  On January 26-27, 2018, Concordia University Wisconsin hosted the 67 th  annual Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT) in Mequon, Wisconsin, a beloved tradition for the men's and women's basketball teams of four Concordia University System schools rotating hosts each year among Ann Arbor, Wisconsin, Chicago, and Nebraska.

A weekend highlight, among many, was CUAA's men's basketball championship game victory over the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons, 82-77. This is the men's 4th CIT title since joining the tournament in 2002. Click here to read more.

Beloved Pastor and CUAA Professor Emeritus Dies January 16

Dr. Jakob K. Heckert, 87, passed away peacefully at home with his family on January 16, 2018. He  was a pastor of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and a former professor at Concordia University, where he taught biblical languages. He served as assistant to the pastor of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartland, Michigan. In addition, he served monthly at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Heckert also preached German services several times a year at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth, Michigan, and Historic Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit, Michigan. In addition, he was the Theological  Editor for Faith Family Reunion.

Dr. Heckert had been in the ministry for more than 50 years, and was ordained in 1963. He earned his Doctor of Theology from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, later receiving an honorary Doctorate from Concordia University Chicago. During the period of 11 years, he pastored three LCMS congregations. After his time in the congregational ministry, he was called to teach at Concordia Seminary where he taught biblical interpretation (exegesis) and preaching (homiletics). Two years later he was called to Concordia College (Concordia University). During his time there he taught Greek, New  Testament and later Hebrew.

A memorial scholarship has been started in Dr. Heckert's name at Concordia. If you would like to donate in his honor, contact Jen Hackmann at jennifer.hackmann@cuaa.edu.
