Lenten Worship Series

2018 Lenten Worship Series
Wednesdays, February 14 - March 28
12 noon in The Sanctuary

& Ash Wednesday Evening Service: February 14, 7 PM in The Sanctuary

- by Mike Alexander

I imagine that the words "Stations of the Cross" and "Via Dolorosa" may sound like phrases from a different time and culture. However, these words will become more familiar to you as they are the theme of this year's Lenten Series.

In Jerusalem there is a lane that runs from the court of Pilate to the hill of Golgatha. Along that lane, as early as the twelfth century, the early church designated numerous stops and events in the life of Jesus on Good Friday, the day of crucifixion. By the sixteenth century, the stations were settled to be fourteen. Some of the locations are clearly from the biblical accounts while others have come from stories and legends.

The stations begin with Pilate's condemnation. They continue as Jesus takes up his cross, falls under the weight of the cross, dies on the cross, and is finally taken down from the cross and placed in the tomb.

Each of the fourteen stations along the Via Dolorosa can be meaningful for us as we make our journey during the Lenten season. I invite you now to make plans to join us for mid-week worship every Wednesday during Lent, beginning February 14.

Actors Needed
 . . . and ACTION!

Belin Worship Arts ministry is in need of volunteer "actors" to fill non-speaking roles in its Maundy Thursday (March 29) drama experience, "Around the Table of the King."  Minimal rehearsal time is required and no experience necessary.

For consideration, please contact Jim Sellers (843.357.5184, [email protected]).

A Place for Recycling
A Place for Recycling
- by Henrietta Huff
Centennial Team Chairperson

This past Tuesday as I was seated in the sanctuary for Church Council, my eyes were drawn to the altar. The topic being considered was the necessity for the Church to be able to change if it is to survive and prosper. My mind was carried back to the many changes that have occurred here at Belin Memorial.

First, there was the recycling of a church building, one in which the Reverend James Belin had preached, no longer home to a congregation, being brought from Pawleys Island to Murrells Inlet and taking in the entire congregation of nearby Bethel Methodist, adapting, adding on, and building a new Education Building, a new Sanctuary, and a new Family Life Center. As the years passed and the membership and needs changed, so had the ways in which these buildings were utilized.

Getting back to the altar - this is the same altar which was in that original church building. Changed, yes, and added onto . . .

Click HERE to read more about the altar, the iron cross in the garden, the stone bench in front of the sanctuary, and how a barren stage was transformed into a place of worship!

Work as Worship Retreat
February 23, 2018
8 AM - 4 PM
Belin Memorial United Methodist Church

Most North Americans spend the majority of their waking hours at work, surrounded by people who may never set foot in a church. You could be the only representation of the gospel that your coworkers will ever see.

We are excited to offer an easy way to equip those of you that want your faith to impact your work for the glory of God.

RightNowMedia is enabling us to web stream a live event in Dallas, TX on Friday, February 23, here at Belin Memorial. This retreat will run from approximately 8 AM to 4 PM, including a mid-day lunch. We hope to join together with those in our congregation and others in our community to learn how our faith can impact the workplace.

Speakers include Matt Chandler, Patrick Lencioni, Joel Manby and more. Click HERE to view information about the speakers.

Registration is required by contacting Jane Sparks ( [email protected] or 843.357.5185).
