Rabin Gouriyal found the Society for disABILITIES just a few years ago through the Vocational Coaching and Development Institute. Rabin volunteers in the Downtown thrift store spending most of his days sorting donations and preparing items for display. His focus is on getting things done, being helpful, and working with others,
Evlin, Rabin's mom, said that he has always had his disability but his being active with work helps. Since he has a helpful personality everyone loves to work with him. This extends to home even though sometimes he thinks he is the boss there!
Before coming to Society for disABILITIES, Rabin worked where his assignment was to open boxes, fill shelves and then dispose of empty boxes. He had very little contact with people. Now, at the Society's thrift store, Rabin has plenty of interaction with people!
Once at the Society, he learned about Society recreational programs. He has participated in bowling where he keeps track of his scores to see his improvement. He doesn't bowl now because he prefers to work and be helpful to others.
Rabin also discovered the Prom and has not missed one since!
Rabin said this year's was the best ever since it included a ride in the limo, more people, dancing, and good food. He was also excited that there were a bunch of people there telling him how great he looked in his suit!
Since Rabin enjoys helping people he was thrilled that he saw friends from previous proms and was able to make new friends as well. He even keeps in his bedroom the name-tag from the prom. And every time he looks at it reminds him of the great time he has had, his many friends, and it won't be long before there will be another prom!
Society for disABILITIES provides Rabin with the opportunity to work and help others.

Help raise needed funds to support Society for disABILITIES' programs.
In honor of the Society for disABILITIES' 71st Anniversary we will have a 70's theme and costume contest, plus much more including prizes for the individual who raises the most money and the team that raises the most money!
Build a team where each team member raises $150 to receive a lift ticket, swag bag, t-shirt, lunch as well as a ski day on March 24th. If you don't ski, we will have a Learn to Ski and Fundraise option. Designed for level 1 or 2 skiers.
It is easy to raise funds.

Winter Ski
THANK YOU to all the volunteers that helped make our ski session flow so smoothly. We had a great day out on the snow on the 10th, so many excited clients and tons of happy smiles on their faces!

2nd Annual Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant
The Modesto 500 Lions Club has announced the 2nd Annual Miss Stanislaus Spirit Princess Pageant will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018.
This is a spirit pageant for girls ages 5 to 22 with disabilities. This year's pageant will feature two contestant groups: Little, ages 5 to 12 and Teen for ages 13 to 22. Each category is open to the first 12 completed applications. Completed applications include the application, picture and registration fee. Contestants do not have to reside in Stanislaus County to participate. To see pictures of last year's pageants

Hello!
Here at Society for disABILITIES we are wrapping up our winter activities and are already deep into our Spring activities!
Winter has been quite exciting with the Night to Shine Prom, winter ski, bowling, and the Crab Feed.
Our last winter activity is our Snowfest 18 Fundraiser on March 24th so there is still time for you to sign-up, donate, or volunteer! (see article for more information).
Spring and Summer activities are already in the works! Miracle League baseball started March 17th, (weather permitting). Teams have been formed and there are only a few more spots for late comers.
Late spring and summer will feature Disabilities Awareness Month, Adaptive Water Ski, the Miss Stanislaus Spirit Pageant, Day on the Farm, bowling, and Bike Camp. More information will be out soon on these programs.
With spring in the air it reminds me of how the Society continues to grow. This couldn't happen without your support, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Spring Cleaning?
For many people the arrival of Spring also means spring cleaning! If this is in your plans, please consider donating to the Society for disABILITIES thrift stores usable items you no longer want or need.
The thrift stores accept gently used clothing, housewares, working appliances, and furniture. Donated durable medical equipment will be utilized in our Loan Closet. Donations are accepted during all open hours. Store Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Stores are located at 1129 8th Street and 700 Scenic Drive. Both stores are in Modesto. Pick-ups are available by appointment on Tuesdays, call for availability (209) 524-3536. All proceeds benefit Society programs..
