Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

Creating a Healthy Barrow

A win-win partnership between the Barrow County School System (BCSS) and Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) was recently established.

Through this District Partner in Education Agreement, NGMC Barrow will sponsor the Nurse's Clinics in each of the 15 schools and 3 additional BCSS programs. Soon there will be classroom video conferencing, career day participation, health care speakers, hospital tours, career exploration opportunities, and future student apprenticeships and student scholarships. Planned for the 2018-19 school year is a joint community awareness and lung-cancer education program with an art competition and gallery exhibition for students. We celebrate a partnership that truly benefits all of Barrow County. The future is bright!

National Recognition for Westside Middle

Ms. Adams' classes at Westside Middle School recently won the NATIONAL Achieve3000 Read to Succeed Contest. The contest is a school wide race toward accelerated literacy achievement! WMS uses the Achieve3000 program to deliver daily differentiated instruction for nonfiction reading and writing that is precisely tailored to each student's Lexile reading program. The key to success with the program is implementation with fidelity, and Ms. Adams led the nation in her delivery of instruction during the contest. Her students showed more growth in the first half of the school year than any other school using Achieve3000 in the nation.

Ms. Adams was awarded a plaque and gift card to use for a celebration for her classes. WMS is extremely proud of Ms. Adams and her students hard work and growth in reading comprehension, fluency, and writing.

AMVETS Demonstrate Honorable Tradition

The Honor Guard of the AMVETS Post 12 of Winder, GA visited Ms. Fleming's 3rd grade students at Yargo Elementary recently. Discussion about the flag and why it's important to honor it and those who serve it got a few students teary eyed during the presentation. Thank you AMVETS for taking the time to teach our students the meaning behind this very special and honorable tradition!
