Roxbury's Kids Learn to Think like Scientists in K-6 STEAM Expo
More than 150 students in Roxbury Township in grades K-6 participated last Saturday in Roxbury's annual K-6 STEAM Expo at Eisenhower Middle School.

Each of the K-6 elementary schools was represented at the expo along with experiments that encompassed every branch of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) including many innovations in technology and sustainability.

The STEAM Expo provides students with the exposure to hands-on learning that challenges them to think critically and creatively, and lets them apply important content knowledge in meaningful ways. The district's curriculum supports and prepares the students for a more scientifically and technologically complex world. In a rapidly changing, increasingly technological world.

Sustainability was seen throughout the Expo this year as Roxbury Schools embarks on this ongoing initiative in the district. Many projects addressed environmental and technological topics. Roxbury Joint Security Presentation - Roxbury BOE Wrap Up March 5
The Roxbury Board of Education held a joint meeting with the Roxbury Town Council and the Roxbury Board of Education on Monday, March 5th in the Roxbury High School Auditorium at 1 Bryant Drive in Succasunna. The purpose of the joint meeting was to provide a district security presentation with Roxbury School's Director of Security, James Simonetti and Roxbury Chief of Police, Marc Palanchi.  The meeting began with the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence in memory of those lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and for all those students and educators who have been victims of violence.

This joint security presentation was in part due to this tragedy on February 14th in Parkland, Florida. The Roxbury Town Council and Board of Education wanted to share with the community what is being done in Roxbury Township to keep its students, staff, and community members safe. This joint forum afforded the public the chance to see and hear the partnership between the two groups as both work towards a healthy and safe school environment for all where learning can be the focus for the students.  Click here to view that presentation.

Lincoln Roosevelt Kicks off Green Initiative with a Magic Show
Lincoln/Roosevelt students officially kicked off their schools green initiative with a magic show by Bill Kerwood on March 9th. Kerwood combined his unique comedy variety show with a recycling program geared towards Roxbury's recycling efforts.

Students learned about misdirection and direction through laughter and magic, while Kerwood tied his approach to encourage each and every student to be recycling captains in their community and at home. He provided a brief overview using magic of which items are to be recycled and how.

Kerwood's message of reducing, reusing, and recycling was brought to the school by Kellie Ann Keyes from Roxbury's Clean Communities program. The four K-4 schools saw this presentation back in the fall thanks to this township program.  Roxbury's Clean Communities program is a comprehensive litter abatement program serving New Jersey residents for 25 years. Its basic mission is to reduce litter in public places, promote the volunteer cleanup of public lands and sustain a reduction in litter through education.

At the end of the show, Assistant Principal Roxanne Medina shared with the students how this green initiative will become a schoolwide one in the coming months with the formation of a school green team. Lincoln/Roosevelt will join the other six Roxbury schools in their endeavor to each become certified with the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program. Click here to read more!
