Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Researchers, Adam Schaefer, Ph.D., Dennis Hanisak, Ph.D., Malcolm McFarland Ph.D., and Executive Director, Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., were recently published in the Journal of Operational Oceanography. The publication titled, “Integrated observing systems: An approach to studying harmful algal blooms in south Florida,” explores why the integration of classical observing methodology, such as phytoplankton surveys, with real-time water quality monitoring, innovative technology, and biological sentinels, is essential. 
Florida Atlantic University Vice President of Research, Daniel Flynn, presented Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Assistant Professor, Joshua Voss, Ph.D., with Researcher of the Year during the University’s 50th annual Honors Convocation, held on Wednesday, April 17. 
Recognition
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is a proud new member of the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce. On April 11, Harbor Branch Executive Director, Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., served as the guest speaker. Dr. Sullivan and several invited friends of Harbor Branch then joined members of the Hobe Sound Commission in a ribbon cutting to mark the membership.  
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is the proud recipient of the 2019 Environmental Stewardship Award for Technology and Innovation. Keep Martin Beautiful hosted the Environmental Stewardship Awards on presented the award on, Tuesday, April 23, as a way to recognize and reward notable efforts within the community to promote environmental stewardship and innovation through education and action.

Harbor Branch Executive Director, Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., participated in a special panel and premiere screening of the Changing Seas upcoming episode, “Toxic Waters” on Earth Day at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science. The episode that will air on PBS in June features several Harbor Branch scientists that are working to understand what causes harmful algal blooms, how they impact us, and how we can stop them.

Upward Bound
The Harbor Branch Marine Mammal Stranding Team is inspiring area youth! Last month, the team spoke to Upward Bound students about their efforts to save dolphins and whales. The team even conducted a mock dolphin rescue with one of the students as the patient.
The State of Harmful Algal Blooms in South Florida and the Indian River Lagoon
James Sullivan, Ph.D., executive director of FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute presented a special lecture at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida Atlantic University, Jupiter on Tuesday, April 16. Nearly 50 attended to hear Dr. Sullivan speak on, "The State of Harmful Algal Blooms in South Florida and the Indian River Lagoon." 
Student Spotlight
Catherine Lo is the first student at Florida Atlantic University to receive a Master of Science in Marine Science and Oceanography. The interdisciplinary program is jointly administered by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.
Marine Research Scholarship
The Fort Pierce Yacht Club presented a $4,500 scholarship to Emily Rutkowski, an Indian River State College of Science Sophomore, to participate in a marine research summer internship at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Rutkowski will be conducting research on the Indian River Lagoon with Susan Laramore, Ph.D., an associate research professor of Aquaculture. The Fort Pierce Yacht Club raised funds during their Poker Run on the Water, held April 14. 
Graduate Student Research Day
Congratulations to Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute graduate student, Kirstie Tandberg, who was recognized during the FAU Graduate and Professional Students Association Research Day. Tandberg received the top award in the Health Sciences category for her poster presentation, “Discovery of surviving targeting marine natural products." She is working with Amy Wright, Ph.D. and Esther Guzmán, Ph.D., on her doctorate in Integrative Biology.
New Employee Spotlight
Amanda Nickeson is a dedicated fundraising professional with nearly two decades of experience in cultivating major gifts for non-profit organizations. Nickeson grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has always felt a deep connection to the ocean and its’ great wonders. In January 2019, she decided to follow her dream and accepted the position of Director of Development for Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI). She resides in Vero Beach with her two dogs, Oliver and Sheldon. On April 1, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute hosted Margaret Leinen, Ph.D., Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Vice Chancellor for Marine Science of the University of California-San Diego. She presented, “Oceanography in the next decade: Where will new ways of studying the ocean lead us?”

Journey to the deep, during an exclusive tour of FAU's Harbor Branch Exploration Command Center. Tours are offered year-round on the second Thursday of every month.
