Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Researchers, Adam Schaefer, Ph.D., Dennis Hanisak, Ph.D., Malcolm McFarland Ph.D., and Executive Director, Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., were recently published in the
Journal of Operational Oceanography. The publication titled,
“Integrated observing systems: An approach to studying harmful algal blooms in south Florida,” explores why the integration of classical observing methodology, such as phytoplankton surveys, with real-time water quality monitoring, innovative technology, and biological sentinels, is essential.

Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., participated in a special panel and premiere screening of the
Changing Seas upcoming episode, “Toxic Waters” on Earth Day at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science. The episode that will air on PBS in June features several Harbor Branch scientists that are working to understand what causes harmful algal blooms, how they impact us, and how we can stop them.

Harbor Branch Marine Mammal Stranding Team is inspiring area youth! Last month, the team spoke to Upward Bound students about their efforts to save dolphins and whales. The team even conducted a mock dolphin rescue with one of the students as the patient.

James Sullivan, Ph.D., executive director of FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute presented a special lecture at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida Atlantic University, Jupiter on Tuesday, April 16. Nearly 50 attended to hear Dr. Sullivan speak on, "The State of Harmful Algal Blooms in South Florida and the Indian River Lagoon."

Marine Research Scholarship

The
Fort Pierce Yacht Club presented a $4,500 scholarship to Emily Rutkowski, an Indian River State College of Science Sophomore, to participate in a marine research summer internship at
FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Rutkowski will be conducting research on the Indian River Lagoon with Susan Laramore, Ph.D., an associate research professor of Aquaculture. The Fort Pierce Yacht Club raised funds during their Poker Run on the Water, held April 14.

Congratulations to
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute graduate student, Kirstie Tandberg, who was recognized during the FAU Graduate and Professional Students Association Research Day. Tandberg received the top award in the Health Sciences category for her poster presentation, “Discovery of surviving targeting marine natural products." She is working with Amy Wright, Ph.D. and Esther Guzmán, Ph.D., on her doctorate in Integrative Biology.

Amanda Nickeson is a dedicated fundraising professional with nearly two decades of experience in cultivating major gifts for non-profit organizations.
