We want to thank our student leadership groups for their role in helping ensure the walk outs for School Safety were done in an appropriate manner on Wednesday. We received very positive feedback from district officials and community members about how the students who participated in the walkout were respectful and genuine, remaining silent for 17 minutes in honor of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Students who presented at the open forum in the auditorium after school were very well spoken and passionate. A reminder that spring break will be from March 26th
through the 30th
.
Queremos agradecer a nuestros grupos de liderazgo estudiantil por su papel en ayudar a garantizar que los retiros de Seguridad Escolar se hicieran de manera apropiada el miércoles. Recibimos comentarios muy positivos de funcionarios del distrito y miembros de la comunidad sobre cómo los estudiantes que participaron en la huelga fueron respetuosos y genuinos, permanecieron en silencio durante 17 minutos en honor a las víctimas del tiroteo Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Thank you to everyone for helping make the 2018 Online Auction a Success! Auction item pickup is TOMORROW, Tuesday March 20th in the front lobby from 2:45 - 6:00 pm.
Receipts will be available at pickup, so no need to bring a copy. If you are unable to attend item pick up please reach out to Megan Perkins (

Band and Orchestra Concert
|
The TJ Band and Orchestra will be hosting students from 3 area middle schools for the day, on
March 20. After a day in rehearsals, the students will perform for friends and family in the TJHS Schanker Auditorium, with each school will have the opportunity sharing music they prepared for this event, and all students performing music they worked on collaboratively during the day's rehearsals. The concert begins at 6:30 pm. All are welcome.

Native American Student Alliance Fundraiser Wednesday

The Native American Student Alliance is collaborating with Panera for a fundraiser to support their 2nd Dance to Your Future Powwow. Please consider supporting these students goal of raising $1,000 and eat dinner at Panera. Don't forget to mention their fundraiser!

Teenagers Embrace JUUL, Saying It's Discreet Enough To Vape In Class
|
Mil Schooley, an 18-year-old student in Denver says most of her friends have a JUUL - an e-cigarette that can vanish into a closed fist. When asked roughly how many, she stumbles a bit. "I wanna say like 50 or 60 percent? I don't know. Maybe it's just the people I know. All my friends in college have one," she says. "It just blew up over the summer."
Schooley doesn't have one herself - at least at the moment. Hers broke due to an unfortunate mishap involving her JUUL and soda water. But the trend to own a vape pen is real, with students bragging on Twitter about using them in class, and researchers saying they're seeing a big spike in use among teens and young adults.

TJ Spartan Spirit Store
is now in two places for your convenience-online and in the main hallway at TJ between the gym and auditorium. The store is also set up at select school events including athletic events, concerts, plays and conference nights.

- On-campus Spirit Store hours are on Fridays during lunch only. A couple of our wonderful parents alternate shifts to make the store convenient and accessible to students. It's also open during various special events. Julie Thibodeau will continue to be available at other times for the occasional urgent or spontaneous purchase.

Residents have asked for better walkability, restaurants and fun gathering places for people near the Southmoor Station area. At this follow-up visioning meeting, we'll provide an overview of initial feedback gathered on Feb. 20, present creative ideas for you to reflect on and strategies on moving forward. Join us and let's create a community vision!

Did You Know...?
Targeting in On Teens & Sexual Harassment
What is Sexual Harassment?
Sexual Harassment is a kind of discrimination. It means that someone is treated differently because of his or her sex or sexual orientation. It is behavior or words that:
- Are directed at a person because of his or her sex or sexual orientation, or perceived sexual orientation
- Are uninvited, unwanted, and unwelcome
- Cause a person to feel uncomfortable or offended
- Create an environment that makes learning difficult
- May be repeated or may be offensive on a one-time basis.
Sexual Harassment is a Serious Problem!
In fact, sexual harassment is illegal in schools and in workplaces because it violates state and federal laws. But it's also hurtful and harmful to its targets, sometimes in long-lasting ways. They often suffer in silence-but they do suffer and may:
- Dread-or even avoid-going to school or to a class
- Find it hard to pay attention in school or to study
- Experience loss of self-confidence or self-esteem.
There are Many Kinds of Sexual Harassment
Physical Sexual Harassment is any unwanted sexually oriented physical act. For Example:
- Grabbing or touching someone, especially his/her sexual parts
- Tearing or pulling at a person's clothing
- Purposely bumping or rubbing against a person
- Kissing or holding a person against his or her will
Verbal Sexual Harassment means offensive words and comments, spoken privately to a person or in front of others. For example:
- Comments about body parts or rating people's bodies
- Sexual suggestions or threats
- Spreading sexual rumors or stories
- Sexual jokes
Nonverbal Sexual Harassment includes:
- Staring or pointing at a person's body or body parts
- Making obscene gestures
- Displaying obscene sexual material
- Writing people's names along with sexual remarks or gestures.
- Using electronic devises to hurt someone because of their sex or perceived sexual orientation
If you are sexually harassed . . . Take Action!!!
Even though it's difficult or embarrassing, you should do something about it. Tell the harasser you don't like it and you want him or her to stop. When behavior or comments offend you, say so. Explain to the harasser how it makes you feel and demand that the harassment stops.
If the harassment continues:
- Write down times, places, witnesses, and what happened
- Report it
- School officials are required by law to check out all complaints
Seek advice and help.
Your district has a sexual harassment policy. No employee or student of this district is allowed to create a sexually hostile or offensive school environment for any student.
Help your friends.
In takes courage to talk about sexual harassment. So if a friend confides in you; listen and show understanding and support.
Encourage your friend to tell the harasser to stop. Offer to go along for moral support.
And if you learn that a friend is being sexually harassed, encourage your friend to report it. Remember that it is illegal for a harasser to try to stop someone from reporting harassment.
Help your friends to talk to someone. Everyone needs to talk to someone who cares. Don't let them carry the burden alone!

Aquetza is a weeklong, free, summer residential program at CU that engages high school youth in academic content and cultural knowledge sessions designed to blur the boundaries between school and community. The Program serves Mexican and Mexican-American high school youth (and Latinx students in general). You can find out more info by clicking the link above.
On the last day of Aquetza, youth are expected to present on topics that synthesize their lived experiences with content covered in Aquetza. I'm truly humbled and honored to share a short presentation from Aquetza's very own Ariana LeDoux.
She provides one of the best presentations I've seen on gender fluidity and intersectional identities. She is one example of the brilliant youth that participate in Aquetza.

Our time is limited and these last few months will be filled with significant milestones and fun celebrations. Now is the time to get involved and make Spring semester of Senior year memorable and meaningful for your Class of 2018 student.
*We have a choreographer for Mr. TJ (thank-you Tyler Cobb) and now we need parents willing to supervise rehearsals and provide lunches/snacks. All parents, regardless of if you have a son or daughter, are welcome to help. Please contact
