"Casting Call" for Nyack's Top Chefs!
Dear Alumni,
Do family and friends rave about your culinary skills? Do your kitchen creations send people back for seconds or thirds? Are your recipes in constant demand?
If you answered YES, the Office of College Relations invites you to contribute your recipes to be considered for a new edition of the classic campus cookbook, "A Taste of Nyack!" The original collection included recipes submitted by faculty, staff and their spouses. Our 2018 edition will be released this coming fall, just in time for Homecoming (
October 12-13).

Nyack/ATS Alumni Celebrate MLK Day in Israel *
Two media outlets in the Middle East, jewishweek.timesofisrael.com and Haaretz.com covered the story of four New York churches that travelled together as "the Brooklyn United Churches Holy Land Pilgrimage."
Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary graduates were among the pastors who were joined by members of their congregations. The group included Pastor Charles Galbreath (NC, '06; ATS, '09) of Clarendon Road Church (top photo); Pastor Lesly Milord (NC '97; ATS '16) and Pastor Mullery Jean-Pierre (NC '00) both of Beraca Baptist Church; Pastor Gilford Monrose (NC '04) of Mt. Zion Church of God and Pastor Clifton McDowell (NC '95; ATS '02) from Church of God of East New York (bottom photo). Alumnus Christopher Smith (NC '10), on the ministerial staff of Clarendon Road Church, served as a trip organizer.
Prior to the conclusion of their weeklong journey, the five Nyack/ATS alumni and their combined congregations-some 200 people-gathered for prayer on January 15 in Jerusalem and paid tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as the late civil rights movement leader was being celebrated back at home in the United States. Pastor Jean-Pierre was the keynote speaker at the commemorative service.

'54 Stephen Westfall
served briefly as a pastor in the C&MA and in 1959, he and his wife went to Ghana, West Africa where they served for 10 years in village work and evangelizing. They later moved to Java, Indonesia and were under the auspices of the Mennonite Church for 15 years. Among other things, the couple began a short-term trade school for high school drop-outs.

'67 Carol (Frey) Welty
served for over 40 years with The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Ecuador. They are currently serving Spanish churches on the West Coast of Florida.
'68 Clifford J. Henning
retired after 25 years of service with Lowes and has published 28 books with Createspace including poetry, commentaries, Christian fantasies, children's stories and plays. In 1977, Nancy Bandiera produced his play, "Women Leaders of the Bible" off-Broadway. All books can be found on Amazon under the name C.J. Henning.
'70 Stephen Knowlton
taught English at East Pennsboro High School in Pennsylvania for 28 years. He has since retired and keeps busy working outside his home. Stephen often reminisces about the
"good ole days" of Nyack College where he was a member of the baseball team.
'71 Donald Paine
, minister and therapist in Albany, NY, made a tremendous recovery from being hit by a car and sustaining a fractured pelvis. He crossed the finish line of his 29th New York City Marathon in November. To read the complete story, click here.
'73 Andrew Y. Lee
was one of the six recipients of the John Stott Award for Pastoral Engagement from the Henry Center at Evangelical Divinity School. Andrew is the senior pastor of the Chinese Christian Union Church in Chicago.
'78 Nyack College, '80 ATS Dave W. Bill and
'83 Teresa (Graves) Bill
are the International Workers in Residence (IWIR) at Toccoa Falls College where Dave also teaches a few courses. Their two sons, Jeremy and Eric, are happily married. Jeremy and his wife, Melanie, work at the Edgewood Children's Ranch near Orlando, FL and Eric and his wife, Vicki, are Alliance international workers in Senegal. Their daughter, Chandra is engaged and planning a 2018 wedding. Dave and Teresa are the proud grandparents of four grandchildren. They are scheduled to return to Africa, either to the Congo or Senegal, in the summer of 2018 which will be their last term before retiring.

retired from her teaching career in Bronx, NY in 2015.
'84 Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Douglas Prentice
of the U.S. Army deployed with the Army North, 5th Army's Hurricane Maria response task force in September to San Juan, Puerto Rico. As the Joint Forces Land Component Command Chaplain, Doug coordinates religious support provided by 30 U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and National Guard chaplains serving with the 14,500 soldiers, sailors, marines, coast guardsmen comprising the defense departments ongoing support to civilian authorities in Puerto Rico and the U
.S. Virgin Islands.

, f
ounder of Donna Baptiste Ministries, presented "2017 Seed to Harvest--Non-Profit, Ministry and Business Development Seminar" in December. The seminar featured workshops on grant writing, plenary sessions for upstart and established organizations, motivational challenges through music and the spoken Word and
avenues for promotion of a business and ministry.

'88 Nyack College, '93 ATS James Curtis Geist
published three volumes of poetry: Modern Augustinian Confession in December 2016; Bottom of the Food Chain: Poems, Anecdotes and Gnostic Droppings in June 2017; and A Robot Ate My Homework: Poetry and Antidotes for the Fourth Revolution Infancy in December 2017. '94 Leighann Lusito
has been teaching English as a New Language (ENL) for 17 years at Mill Road Elementary School in Red Hook, NY. She also hosts a blog,"Tokens of His Love."
'95 ADCP Steve Lankard
joined CBTS in October as vice president and principal of Infrastructure Solutions. His responsibilities include developing strategic vendor partnerships and matching vendor initiatives with CBTS strategy. Steve also manages subject matter expert teams and sales support and business operations teams. He has over 28 years of experience in business and IT. Before joining CBTS, Steve spent six years at OnX Enterprise Solutions, where he most recently was vice president, Alliances and Solutions Architects. He was also chief technology officer and vice president, Technology Solutions for the U.S. division.
'95 Grace (Fiedler) Rydqvist
is working as a kindergarten teacher. She is married and has two children.
'96 ATS Mark Alden Byrom
earned a doctor of ministry degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in May. He is serving as pastor of Global Connections at Appleton Alliance Church in Wisconsin. He and his wife, Deborah (ATS '96), served as C&MA international workers in Bosnia and Herzegovina in Europe from 1999 until 2013 when they transitioned to Appleton.
'96 ATS Joseph Scordato
is employed as a chaplain with Ascend Hospice.
'01 Sarah (Lindberg) Malanowski
is working on a book that is customized for women in the commercial sex industry as well as for victims of human trafficking. The first book is customized for Tampa, FL. She is currently working on a Spanish edition and editions for Minnesota, Tennessee, Atlanta, Orlando and a national edition. Sarah's hope is to customize this book for every city, sharing the Gospel and equipping women to embrace their value in Christ. To learn more about Sarah's ministry, click

'03 NC, '06 AGSC Mark Karris
is an ordained pastor, licensed marriage and family therapist, speaker, musician, adjunct professor and all around biophilic. He is the author of Season of Heartbreak: Healing for the Heart, Brain, and Soul (Kregel, 2017). His new book, Divine Echoes: Reconciling Prayer the Uncontrolling Love of God, has been published. It wrestles with the conundrum of prayer, theodicy and issues of social justice. It has been endorsed by Thomas Oord, Brian McLaren, Catherine Keller, Brad Jersak, Mark Scandrette and over ten other scholars and authors. For information on the workbook, click here.
'03 ATS Yeathus Johnson
,
Urban Region Superintendent of the Metropolitan District of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, is offering training around the country on Cultural Intelligence and Diversity Awareness. For the past two years, Yeathus says he has been conducting various seminars at churches, ministries and non-profit organizations to "pursue competencies and skills that will break down the racial walls of separation, the 'us vs. them' mentality, the division and ambivalence toward cultural diversity."

'06 MSOL, '17 AGSC Earl Miller
was a contributor to the Oral History Project recorded at Kiam Records in downtown Nyack. The project launched on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. The objective of the collaborative effort of Rockland County churches, civic organizations, artists and businesses is to document African American experiences and personal stories that will be highlighted each year on Dr. King's birthday and during Black History Month in February. Earl served as the Religious Affairs Coordinator for the King Memorial service held at Pilgrim Baptist Church prior to the launch of the project.
'08 ATS Ryan E. Faison
pastor of Quest College and Young Adults Ministries at Christ Church (Montclair and Rockaway, NJ) has been appointed to the role of executive director of Young Adults United (YAU). YAU is a Kingdom-minded movement to bring young adult leaders and ministries together across the state of New Jersey. In this role, Ryan will spearhead the YAU leadership team's efforts in casting vision, organizing regional events and retreat and promote cross-cultural, Kingdom-minded collaboration. YAU founder and Associate Pastor of Youth and College Ministries, John Dere ('15. M.Div., ATS) will continue to support the vision of YAU.

'08 Jacob Nevill
was a featured instrumentalist in a GraceMusic concert at Grace Episcopal Church in Nyack, NY. The program showcased instrumental, vocal and organ music by two composers, Herbert Howells and Ralph Vaugh Williams. Jacob is a lecturer at Nyack College who teaches Basic Theory and Introduction to Music Technology.
'10 AGSC Nicole Brown
launched a Christian apparel online store, Living Light Designs by NB. Her vision is that her products will be a light of faith, hope, inspiration and transformation from the inside out. Nicole is also an on-air host of the Christian radio station AM570 WMCA The Mission that broadcasts on Sundays through Fridays from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.
'11 Janay Webster
was awarded the Miss Black America Louisiana 2017 title by the Miss Black America Pageant. The mission of the pageant is to celebrate th accomplishments of African American women, encourage women to be involved in community service, as well as use the pageant title to "Sow the Seeds of Positivity and Reap the Flowers of Success." Janay is the first titleholder from her home state since 1981. She was a former New Orleans Society of Musicians member and maintained her personal goal of attending school in New York. After completing her education at Nyack, she returned to New Orleans for a position with the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music before accepting employment at Caesars Entertainment.
One of Ms. Webster's desires is to help provide resources to single mother households during her reign. She will also continue community efforts supporting educational and artistic programming for youth, the New Orleans Missions and more.
'12 Nicole Scarano
published a book entitled Pomegranate that is available in both Kindle and paperback formats on amazon.com. This novel is a fictitious twist on Greek mythology that focuses on Hades.
'17 MSOL Jacquelyn Hoover, has been accepted into a doctoral program at University of Western States (UWS) in Portland, OR. She will pursue an Ed.D. in sport
and performance psychology with a concentration in clinical mental health counseling. In addition to her coursework, the program requires that she complete a 100-hour clinical practicum and a 600-hour internship. UWS is a health sciences university dedicated to integrated, patient-centered care. She will begin classes this April in the low residency program.
Jackie is currently an assistant women's lacrosse coach at Gordon College in Wenham, MA. This year, she was also named vice president of the Board of Directors for Lax4Life, Inc., a national non-profit organization that provides support programs for adolescent and young adult suicide prevention. In her role as an officer of the organization, she is involved with fundraising and special events.

'07 Sara (Gawronski) Kim
married David Kim in 2015, and in 2017 they welcomed baby girl Karis. Sara exclaims, "Praise the Lord for His goodness!"

'12 Kristen Lee Naylor
and Christopher Edward Heim announced their engagement and are planning a September 2018 wedding in Colorado. Kristen is a realtor with Estate Professionals in Boulder, Colorado.

'16 ATS Emmanuel Jean-Pierre
and '13 NC, '17 ATS Yolanda Morgan announced their engagement. Emmanuel proposed in the furniture area of IKEA where the couple had their first date. Emmanuel is the Creative Arts Coordinator for Rockland Spiritual Formation and Yolanda is an instructor with Amy Abdallah's Woman program.

'51 Stanley R. Hiers
passed away in September 2017 at the age of 94. Prior to his graduation from Nyack College in 1951, Stanley served the U.S. Army with the Tactical Air Command in the European Theatre during World War II. When the war ended, Stanley received God's call to ministry and enrolled at Nyack College, where he met his wife, Hazel (Crounse '48). Stan and Hazel moved to Miami where he served as assistant pastor of Central Alliance Church. He also pastored churches in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama and New York. After 42 years of ministry with the C&MA, Stan and Hazel retired to Florida.
'56 Yvonne Ione Bowers
, 83, went home to be with the Lord on November 9, 2017. A native of Norwalk, Ohio, Yvonne retired in 1998 after 57 years of ministry alongside her pastor and missionary husband, Howard Bowers ('56). She served as a missionary in Guinea, West Africa and later as a pastor's wife to congregations in Pennsylvania and Ohio. She ministered alongside her husband in the offices of the Eastern and Central Districts of The Christian and Missionary Alliance. Yvonne loved music and was a piano and organ teacher for many years, as well as a vocalist for church and an avid reader, crafter and seamstress.
'59 Barbara Douglas
passed away on January 2, 2018 after a short illness. After graduating from Nyack, Barbara answered God's call to the mission field in Burkina Faso. She spent a year in Geneva, Switzerland studying French and Bambara, then proceeded to the mission compound where she handled business operations. Following one full term, Barbara returned home on furlough. When she returned to Burkina Faso, Barbara contracted malaria. She spent the remainder of her years suffering from side effects of the malaria treatments. Barbara is survived by loving friends and family.

'64 John T. Stanley
passed away on October 15, 2017 at the age of 80. He was first married June 13, 1959 to Betty Lou (Hahn) Stanley who preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 1998. On June 23, 2001 he married Linda Jean (Bletz) Buurma Stanley who survives.
John began his service in 1967 as a police officer in Bucyrus, Ohio. He advanced from Patrolman to Captain. In 1987 he was recognized by the VFW for capturing those attempting to vandalize the American and POW/MIA flags in the Bucyrus town square. He was awarded the American Legion Certificate of Commendation in 1987. He was named the 1989 State of Ohio Police Officer of the Year. In the 1990s John organized the Drug Abuse Resistance Education "DARE" program for Bucyrus, and served as its officer into his retirement. In 2000 John was awarded Citizen of the Year for his DARE work for Crawford County by Bucyrus Area Chamber of Commerce.
John served faithfully as a volunteer throughout his life at Beulah Beach Camp, Vermillion, OH; Light House Keeper, Apostle Islands, Bayfield, WI; Grand Traverse, Crisp Point and Mission Point, MI; Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Trainman, including the Polar Express and Thomas the Train expeditions; Mansfield Hospital and the Willard Hospital where he was a "Volunteer of the Year." He served as elder, minister of music and choir director at Willard Christian Reform Church. He was a founding elder and choir director at First Alliance Church, Bucyrus.

'70 John Dana Fenlason
passed away on September 14, 2017 at the age of 71. John graduated from Nyack College with a love for teaching and a heart for overseas missions. He lived in Florida where he prospered in business, was a private pilot and raised his three children. Later, with his wife, he lived in Romania as a missionary to the Gypsies before moving to the mountains of North Carolina. John encouraged all who knew him. John also enjoyed motor home trips out West with his family, dirt biking, Jeep riding, traveling through Europe and any activity that involved his kids and grandchildren.
'05 Jennifer (Hernandez) Larson
, an interdisciplinary studies major in psychology/pastoral ministry, passed away on January 22, 2018. Jennifer is survived by her loving husband, Adam, and their precious children--Ariella, Nadine, Noé and Hanok as well her parents, Angelo and Sol Maria and sisters, Maria and Jannica.
