Greg Maichack's Pastel Paint Workshop Returns!

Award-winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack makes his annual visit to the Middleborough Public Library at 6:00 p.m. on Wed., March 28 to present his new adult workshop titled, "Monet's Magic: Pastel Paint Monet's Wondrous Water Lilies."  This fun pastel painting workshop is designed for everyone from beginners to experienced artists.
 
Participants will experiment with hundreds of the artist's professional grade pastels, pastel pencils, and pastel paper. All materials will be provided, and everyone who attends will get to take home his/her artwork.
 
Maichack is an experienced professional at teaching pastel techniques, as recognized by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and hundreds of libraries and local cultural councils. 
 
Seating is limited, so registration is required. Call 508/946-2470, or email Libby Fox at lfox@sailsinc.org.  There is no charge to attend.

An Ireland Travelogue
with Dana Zaiser

J oin us for an educational and entertaining travelogue trip to Ireland with Dana Zaiser, Wed., March 14 at 6:30 p.m.
 
Loaded with exciting pictures, videos, and historical information, Zaiser's presentation will focus on his 2017 "Castles and Manors" trip to Ireland.  The visit included stops at the Rock of Cashel, Ring of Kerry, Kylemoor Abbey, Phoenix Park, and the Guinness brewery, among others.
 
This presentation is suitable for all age groups, and is made possible thanks to the support of the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library.
Baby Kneads Programs at
Your Library This Month

Sheryl White from Baby Kneads brings three exciting programs for moms and kids to the Library this month.

Thurs., March 15, 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. -- "Toddler Enrichment."  Forty-five minutes of  props, stories, songs, and signing.   For kids birth- 18 months and their caregiver(s).  No registration required. 

Wed., March 21, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. -- "Mindfulness- Sensory Awareness through Engaging Activities."   This class is designed to practice mindfulness with children while modeling how to be more aware and in the present moment. Mindfulness can help children increase their attention span, focus and concentration, improve memory, social functioning, and self esteem, reduces stress, and can improve relationships with parents.  

You'll do simple and fun activities to encourage mindfulness and relaxation so everyone can see it in action.  Sheryl brings a bag of props, such as a kindness rock, puppets, and chime bells, and will engage you in sensory activities to learn how to be more mindful.   F or kids 3-10 years of age and their caregiver(s). Registration required.

Carol Carver Celebrates Kite
Month in March

Mon., March 5 at 10:30 a.m. -- Carol Carver from Self Help, Inc.'s Coordinated Family and Community Engagement program invites preschoolers and their caregivers to celebrate Kite Month through stories, songs and other activities.  Space is limited.  Call or stop by the Library to register.
Preschool Storylabs -- 
Special Guests this Month!

Preschool Storylabs combine books with science, art, math and lots of hands-on activities. Kids ages 3-6,  along with their caregivers and siblings, are invited to join us on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.  throughout March.
 
March 7 -- Miss Marilyn will present a program on weather -- will March really come in like a lion and go out like a lamb?
 
March 14 -- Miss Betsy will be talking about colors and rainbows.

March 21 -- No Storylabs program this week. We hope you'll sign up for the Mindfulness for Kids program instead. (See Baby Kneads article above.)

March 28 -- Miss Betsy will end the month with a program on sunflowers.
 
Preschool Storylabs combine STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) with stories, songs, games, art projects, science experiments and more.  After the 30-minute formal program, enjoy time to socialize and have a snack in the room.  These programs are free, with no advance sign-up required.
Switch-A-Roo with
Carol Carver

Get your young children ready to read by creating a literacy-rich home.  During this program, on Thurs., March 15, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., parents and children will work and play together through activities, songs, movement, books, and art.  Parents will also hear, share, and discuss literacy topics while their child enjoys art projects and/or manipulatives.  They'll  go home with a bag full of helpful ideas while children will take all their projects.

This program is best for families with children ages 3-6.  Space is limited, so contact the Library to register.  

Your Favorite Programs for Children and Families

Regular children's programs continue throughout the month of March. Check the  Library's calendar for specific dates and special events.

Mondays from 4:00 p.m. - 6:20 p.m. Reading to Miss Marilyn's Spaniels.  Sign up for a 20-minute time slot and read to a therapy dog in a relaxed and non-judgmental setting.  Call or stop by the Library to register.

Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.   Lego-mania! Come build with the Library's Legos and Duplos.  All ages are welcome; no registration required. This month, with Miss Amanda out, Lego Club will be unsupervised. Parents are required to stay with their children for the hour.

Please note:  for Mother Goose on the Loose and Wiggles & Giggles this month, there will be no formal program.  With Miss Amanda out, it will be playtime only.

Thursdays at 10:15 a.m.  Mother Goose on the Loose.  Meet up with other moms and babies age birth- 18 months for a play group.  This unsupervised play time will allow for babies and moms to socialize.  Toys from the Library will be provided.  Meet in the Library's Large Meeting Room.  No registration required. 

Thursdays at 11:15 a.m.   Wiggles & Giggles.  Join moms and toddlers 18  months - 3 years of age for a play group.  This unsupervised play time will allow toddlers and moms to socialize.  Meet in the Library's Large Meeting Room.  Library toys will be available.  No registration required.

This Month's Marvelous Museum Pass

 
The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston is dedicated to the memory of our nation's 35th president and to all those who through the art of politics seek a new and better world.   Located on a ten-acre park, overlooking the sea that he loved and the city that launched him to greatness, the Library stands as a vibrant tribute to the life and times of John F. Kennedy (JFK). 
 
Tour the museum which portrays the life, leadership, and legacy of President Kennedy, conveys his enthusiasm for politics and public service, and illustrates the nature of the office of the President.  Students and scholars can also arrange to conduct research using the collection of historical materials chronicling mid-20th century politics and the life and administration of JFK.
 
Each pass admits 2 people with a $3 per person co-pay. Children 12 and under are free. Please remember you may pick up your pass any time during the three days before your visit, and it must be returned by closing time of the day following your visit.

  Looking for a little St. Patrick's Day trivia to sprinkle into your conversation over corned beef and cabbage?  The following tidbits will provide a festive rejoinder or two among friends and family.

1. Patrick was not his given name:  Patrick's "real"name was Maewyn Succat, or in Latin, Magonus Succetus.   He took on the name Patrick when he became a priest.

2. If it seems like Guiness is everywhere, it is!  Approximately 13 million pints of the brew will be consumed worldwide on St. Patrick's Day.

3. The shamrock is not the symbol of Ireland:  That honor goes to the harp. A popular icon of the holiday, the shamrock was used by St. Patrick to teach the Holy Trinity.

4. Beantown started the party in the United States:  The first American St. Patrick's Day celebration took place in Boston  in 1737.

5. St. Patrick's Day rakes in a lot of green:  The average amount American  revelers spend on this holiday is about $37 per person, totaling a combined $4.6 billion.

6. Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day:  33.3 million U.S. residents claim Irish ancestry, which is seven times Ireland's total population.
