A Message from the Principal
Mr. Gouriotis addresses student-led events that occurred on the national walkout date.

In the weeks since the school violence in Parkland, FL, Lancer student leaders united and organized plans to share their voices and support the victims on Wednesday, March 14, which marked the 1-month anniversary of the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School. Student-organized events for the day included:
  • Honoring the 17 victims announcing them all by name and participating in 17 seconds of silence. The PA announcement was led by students and included an overview of additional plans.
  • Signing banners to be sent to Stoneman Douglas to show Lake Park's support. Banners at each campus were accessible in the main lobby in the morning and the cafeteria during lunch.
  • Distributing orange ribbons that were worn to show support of the Parkland community.
  • Producing a video message to share their voices in support of the victims and to raise awareness for the importance of school safety. Teachers played this video at 10:00 a.m. as a constructive alternative to a walkout.
While Lake Park could not condone or encourage student participation in the nationwide walkout that occurred this week, the administrative team and staff planned for the possibility of such an event to ensure safety and security.

On Wednesday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m., approximately 1000 students between both campuses participated in the national walkout and were extremely respectful. I am so proud of the way our students organized and conducted themselves.

Thank you to those who exited the building in a respectful and orderly manner and returned for the next class period. At West Campus, Lancers held hands in silence and formed a loop in solidarity around the front plaza for 17 minutes. At East Campus, students excited to the stadium and walked several loops around the track.

Designed as a constructive alternative to a walkout, the student video message was played in classrooms, the cafeteria, auditorium and library for the students who remained. I commend the students who bravely shared their voices in support of the Parkland victims and are helping to raise awareness for the importance of school safety.

Wednesday was a proud moment for all of us to witness how the collaborative planning and preparation of our Lancers - students and staff - contributed to a meaningful day. Without a doubt, the involvement and responsiveness of staff contributed to the safety, security and success of that day.

I also want to convey my appreciation for the professionalism and expertise of West Campus School Resource Officer Schwytzer and East Campus School Resource Officer Forrest. Lake Park is fortunate to have such strong relationships with local government and law enforcement agencies. We are grateful for this partnership and the proactive steps taken by the onsite presence of the Roselle, Bloomingdale, Itasca and Hanover Park police departments to safeguard students and staff.

As we prepare for another national walkout on Friday, April 20, (the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School tragedy), the administrative team, staff, and police departments will use observations and insight from our experience on Wednesday. Safety and security is the district's highest priority and a responsibility that we all share together.
