Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage
The Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage will take place Saturday, March 24th at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 391 Ogden Street in Bridgeport, and will include an opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration, a chance to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a concert with Steve Angrisano and prayer with Bishop Caggiano. Mr. Lance Brevard - Security Guard
1.)
What is the best part about being a security guard?
Well I will answer this question not so much as what is the best part about being a security officer because that is just a general job. I will answer this as what is my role at SAINT ALOYSIUS SCHOOL, which I believe is more of being a School Resource Officer.
I went into law enforcement originally to make a difference in people's lives and over the years I believe that I have made a difference to many people throughout my career. I was the very first SRO at Danbury High School early in my police career and have always been involved in youth sports in Danbury and New Milford areas. As I continued my career I realized that education and knowledge would help me be a better officer and person. I became a Training Officer, Police Instructor and an Accident Reconstructionist.
Upon my retirement as a police officer have utilized these skills and as I entered the Security world these skills have served me well. I was approached about working here at Saint Aloysius because of my past career accomplishments. At first, I was unsure if I wanted to dive back into an SRO role, but I am so happy that I made the decision to come here. So, let's answer the question from that view point of what a like about being an SRO. I love walking hallways of the school and try to make as many positive contacts in a day that I can and get to know as many kids as possible.
I attempt to gain their trust and from that when kids are in need they will come to me. I have tried to be proactive with the kids explaining to them safety in and out of the school. Being a SRO is not at all different than my prior job. It is just a smaller contained vessel. The students and faculty are my citizens and the building is my city and I am here to protect and serve all that dwell here. I consider myself a protector, instructor and role model and I love what I do.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
My father was from the South and I have spent all of my summers in South Carolina. My mother and brother, aunts and cousins all live there, and it is my second home. After my sons complete college this is where I plan to live. Though I also plan to travel which I haven't done much of and that could change. I nice Caribbean beach would be nice too!

What was your 1st job?
My very first job was a newspaper rout, then various part time jobs while in school. But my first real job was at 18 years of age, I worked full time evenings while I was going to college during the day, it was as a Security Officer at Danbury Hospital. I became a police officer at 22 years of age at Western Connecticut State University the college that I was attending. That was 33 years ago. Boy the time flies by.

Do you like or dislike surprises?
I like surprises, what would life be without them, pretty boring. I don't want to know what I got for Christmas or Birthday presents until I open it. I like surprise parties and I can keep a secret until the last minute. I don't need to know right away about things unless it's an emergency.

Dear Parents,
Is there any truth to this saying, "If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb?" While many weather folklores are based on careful observations and turn out to be accurate, others are merely rhymes or beliefs of the people who came before us. With March being such a changeable month during which see warm and spring-like temperatures or late season snowstorms, you can understand how this saying might hold true. After this week, spring will finally be a reality.
At this time in March we find ourselves deep in the season of Lent. As we prepare for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, students have been encouraged not only to give up something for Lent but to make more of an effort to live our lives by following Jesus' example. Lent is truly a time to remind ourselves that God loved us so much, He gave us His only Son.
This past week the halls at St. A's were extremely quiet as the students in grades 2-8 took the Iowa Assessment standardized tests. Their minds were extremely focused as they worked through the questions. Next week will conclude the testing for all students and the make-ups for those who were absent.
We thank all the families that participated in our family STEM night. The challenge was to build the tallest straw tower capable of supporting the weight of a bag of popcorn for no more than $10,000 worth of materials. The variety of solutions was a true testament to the "out of the box" thinking that St. A's encourages each and every day. No two designs were alike, proving that there is more than one solution to any given problem. Congratulations to the winning families: 1st Place: the Smiths, 2nd Place: the Hegers, 3rd Place: the Skornikis & Manfredis and 4th Place the Guidices team. On Wednesday, January 10, S.L.A.M students have had the wonderful opportunity to receive training from New Canaan CARES Executive Director, Meg Domino, PhD, MPH, MCHES. Mrs. Domino has been spreading good throughout the community of New Canaan for 16 years, and it was an honor to have her at our S.L.A.M session to further our knowledge of leadership. During S.L.A.M's first session with Mrs. Domino, she taught us the importance of public speaking, telling us that putting ourselves out there makes us good leaders, as people want leaders to be relatable. Mrs. Domino's number one public speaking tip is to slow down and annunciate. She says slowing down to eliminate "like" or "um", frequently used fill in words, can make you sound much more confident and sure of what you are saying. We look forward to continuing our training with Mrs. Domino and her NCHS leaders in May.
To celebrate Valentine's Day and to spread positivity throughout our school, S.L.A.M. students implemented the Compliment Hearts program. Each student received a cut out heart with their name and ribbon. In each class, students wrote compliments for each of their peers, and in turn, received compliments on their own hearts. It was nice to see our student body give, as well as receive, cheerful messages from their classmates! This activity demonstrate one of the goals of S.L.A.M. which is to spread positive thoughts and improve school climate.
S.L.A.M. students are excited to introduce their First Annual Talent Showcase. We have accepted applications and are excited to showcase the talent of our student body! The First Annual S.L.A.M. Talent Showcase will take place on Wednesday, March 28th at 1:00pm. One of our S.L.A.M. parents has graciously volunteered to video the showcase and a DVD can be bought. All proceeds support S.L.A.M! Parents are more than welcome, and we hope to see you there!
This past Wednesday, S.L.A.M. welcomed a very special guest, Andrew Nisco, son of Mrs. Nisco, our Faculty Advisory. Andrew is a freshman at American University in Washington, D.C. in the School of Public Affairs and was selected to be part of the S.P.A. Leadership Program. This is a very select program, and Andrew had a lot to share with us of all that he has learned so far! He gave us a presentation on different types of leadership theories can make a better leader and shared some of his own experiences. At the end, Andrew asked the S.L.A.M. members to complete a team building activity. We were placed in groups of five and asked to work together without talking to build a bridge made of straws and tape. When the activity was completed, we talked about what we had experienced, and it seemed that there was a dominant leader in each group, and people who helped the cause come to life. The most important thing we learned, is that we were all leaders because we all took part.
