NOMINATED FOR 2018 OSCARS

Congratulations to the WMM Production Assistance projects and alums who have been nominated for Academy Awards!
  • STRONG ISLAND (director Yance Ford), supported by WMM's Production Assistance Program, was nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Yance is the now first transgender director ever to be nominated for an Oscar.
  • MUDBOUND by PA Alum Dee Rees received 2 nominations- Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography, breaking two more records: first African American woman nominated in the adapted screenplay category and, for Rachel Morrison, first woman ever nominated for cinematography.
  • Production Assistance Program alum Laura Checkoway's film EDITH & EDDIE was nominated for Best Documentary Short.
These nominations continue our streak: films and filmmakers we have supported have been nominated for or won Oscars in 12 of the past 13 years. But more importantly, these nominations represent the impact our program seeks to achieve. These diverse voices are building real and sustainable careers in the industry. We are extremely proud to see this progress and want to make sure it continues.

berlinNEW ACQUISITION YOURS IN SISTERHOOD
TO HAVE ITS WORLD PREMIERE IN BERLIN

Our newest acquisition  YOURS IN SISTERHOOD  will have its world premiere in the Forum at the 68th Berlinale .  Filmmaker Irene Lusztig and WMM's Executive Director Debra Zimmerman will be in attendance at the festival.

YOURS IN SISTERHOOD is a performative, participatory documentary inspired by the breadth and complexity of letters that were sent in the 1970s to the editor of Ms.- America's first mainstream feminist magazine. T he film documents hundreds of strangers from around the U.S. who were invited to read aloud and respond to these letters written by women, men and children from diverse backgrounds. Collectively, the letters feel like an encyclopedia of both the 70s and the women's movement- an almost literal invocation of the second-wave feminist slogan "the personal is political."  The intimate, provocative, and sometimes heartbreaking conversations that emerge from these performances invite viewers to think about the past, present, and future of feminism.
