Administrative Remarks...
To continue with our “Tradition of Excellence,” we have implemented Circles this school year as part of the Restorative Practices. This helps to allow students to feel a sense of belonging at school among their peers, a connectedness to school, and not feel isolated.

Circle Time
All grades participate in “Circle” time each day with a teacher and some of their peers. Students spend a brief period answering a specific question and having discussions on various topics. This “Circle” time helps meet the social and emotional needs of our students which is also part of our P ositive B ehavioral I ntervention and S upports (PBIS) program.

Questions to Ask Your Child
Many parents/guardians ask questions of their child by asking, “How was your day?” In addition, please consider asking the following questions:
  • What made you smile today? What kind of person were you today?
  • Can you tell me an example of kindness you said/showed today?
  • What did you do today that was creative?
  • Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday.
  • Who did you sit with at lunch today? Did you like your lunch today?
  • What was the hardest rule/expectation to follow today?
  • If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?
  • What made your teacher smile or frown today? Was anyone in your class absent today?
  • If you could switch seats with anyone in class, who would it be? Why?

Respect Our Differences
As we continue in Circle time to focus on the R in PRIDE ( P erformance, R espect, I ntegrity, D etermination, E ffort), students discuss respecting differences among people. It’s important to first understand what the differences are then learn how and why it’s important to respect those differences.

We have a very diverse population representing many different cultures which we would like to learn about and celebrate. Culture is an important part of our lives which influences every aspect of our lives. As we work with our students to build relationships, it helps to have some perspective and understanding of our differences and cultures. We do not want people feeling disrespected or going home at the end of the day feeling broken-hearted. We want students to demonstrate care, empathy or concern for the effort, differences, or needs of their peers.

Multi-Cultural Fair on March 28
In March, students will learn about other cultures and discuss what it means to respect other’s differences and culture. The culminating activity for this learning is the Lockland Multi-Cultural Fair held on March 28, from 6-7:30pm, beginning in the Cafeteria by Door 13. We invite you to attend and participate.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us! We look forward to an outstanding 4 th quarter!

The State of our Facilities

As we have mentioned in the past several newsletters, we have a beautiful, historic building that is a regional icon. However, behind the walls the building has a variety of concerns. Our plumbing, wiring, and mechanical systems are decades old. We are in a place where fixing these concerns can become extremely costly to tax payers.

We have a committee of about 40 members from Arlington Heights and Lockland who have been meeting biweekly to discuss our options. Please look for information about the direction we would like our community to support.

We will have an open community meeting in the next few weeks to get everyone’s input.

CLASROOM SPOTLIGHT
Mrs. Gibson’s 4th Grade Language Arts Class:
We are tirelessly preparing to ace the Ohio AIR assessment. The students are writing opinion papers weekly on current events in the news using Newsela’s website. The students take a stance and back their opinions using facts from the articles. They have argued articles with current events such as Global Warming, Appropriate Protesting from Players at NFL sporting events, should Columbus Day be celebrated, and should there be a permanent spot to house all Olympic games. They have done a remarkable job at understanding these current events in the world, and supporting their thoughts in their writing.
My class is also building our vocabulary skills by learning 10 new vocabulary words from our Journey’s Anthology every week. The kids define these words using context clues, and complete an activity using their own personal experiences to connect with the given vocabulary word. They do this in their literacy centers and have shown great mastery and growth in completing these activities.
