Sponsor a Birthday Cake at The Main!
Main Birthday Party 1
Few days in a child's life are as precious as his or her birthday. Unfortunately, for far too many underprivileged children, that day passes with little celebration - if any at all. CRYP wants to make sure that the young children who attend The Main youth center have the birthday festivities they deserve.

Each month, The Main hosts a birthday party for the children whose birthdays fall during that month. To offset the cost of each party, CRYP seeks monthly sponsors to contribute $40 for the birthday cake. Please consider sponsoring a birthday cake this year! Every dollar makes such a difference in the lives of Cheyenne River's children.

Support CRYP When You Shop Online!
What if CRYP earned a donation every time you searched the Internet? Or, what if a percentage of every online purchase you made supported our cause?

Amazon, for example, will donate 0.5% of your purchase price to CRYP when you shop at smile.amazon.com. To make shopping even easier, you can add the AmazonSmile 1 Button to your web browser.

Then there are GoodSearch and GoodShop.

GoodSearch.com is a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up.

GoodShop.com is an online shopping mall that donates up to 30% of each purchase to your favorite cause. Hundreds of great stores have teamed up with GoodShop so that every time you place an order, you'll be supporting your favorite cause.

And, if you download the
"GoodSearch - Cheyenne River Youth Project - CRYP toolbar," our cause will earn money every time you shop and search online EVEN if you forget to go to the GoodShop or GoodSearch sites first! Click here to add the toolbar.

While you're online, you even can make a secure donation with your Capital One credit card. Simply click here. You even can add an easy-to-use widget for future contributions.

Together, We Brought Santa Claus to More than 1,500 Children

Once again, the Cheyenne River Youth Project's small staff, dedicated band of volunteers, and wide range of generous donors brought Santa Claus to South Dakota's Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. And, they managed to top last year by serving an additional 200-plus children.

According to Julie Garreau, CRYP's executive director, this year's Christmas Toy Drive served 1,554 children, and this month, the nonprofit organization has continued to deliver gifts to families who weren't available for pick-ups or deliveries on the holiday itself.

"In the end, we expect to serve close to 1,600 children in 20 communities across our 2.8-million-acre reservation," she said. "Each of those children received up to four gifts from their 'Dear Santa' letter as well as winter clothing and shoes, and each package was addressed personally to the child for whom it was intended. It was a monumental undertaking, and we couldn't have done it without our team."

This year's partners included South Dakota's Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, Rapid City Woodworkers Association, and CRST Indian Child Welfare; the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, based in Virginia; the Spirit of Sovereignty Foundation in Minnesota; Haven Middle School in Evanston, Illinois; the Gen 8 Foundation in New York; and the St. Louis Branch of CRYP, a "friends" group based in Missouri.

Then there was Colorado. Partners included the American Indian College Fund, Fredericks Peebles & Morgan law firm, Lennar Construction, Fairview High School in Boulder, and a variety of student groups at the University of Colorado's Boulder campus: the Leeds School of Business faculty and staff, the Multicultural Business Student Association, the Diverse Scholars Program, the Delta Sigma Pi professional business fraternity, the Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity, Sigma Pi, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the Beta Alpha Psi international honor organization for accounting, finance and information systems.

In addition to these partners were many individual donors who adopted their own "Dear Santa" letters or sent financial contributions and gift cards so CRYP staff could do additional shopping on their end.

"So many wonderful people have taken Cheyenne River's children into their hearts, which has a lasting impact," Garreau said. "The Christmas Toy Drive is about so much more than toys. It's about showing our kids that they're important, and that they are loved.

"When they're small, they feel loved by Santa Claus," she continued. "When they get older, they realize they're treasured by countless people across the country, and around the world, although they've never met. That's a powerful force for good. As we always say here, you cannot underestimate the impact of a single act of kindness."

125 Teens Helped CRYP Staff Ring in the New Year at Midnight Basketball

Our staff and 125 youth rang in the New Year together during a very special holiday edition of Midnight Basketball. They played ball, participated in wellness testing, won prizes, drank hot cocoa, ate a lot of snacks and stayed warm - and all got home safely. Our staff members provided rides to and from the event for those who needed them.

Kids, thanks so much for joining us!! We missed you and were so happy to welcome you back after the long weeks of the Christmas Toy Drive. And to our youth programs staff: Thank you for your kindness and caring. You didn't need to do this, but you wanted to, and we love you for it.

Winter Clothing Distribution Serves Hundreds This Month

On Jan. 12, more than 84 families stopped by to receive much-needed winter coats, winter boots and blankets in CRYP Family Services' Winter Clothing Distribution. We distributed 600 coats and 500 pairs of boots, along with 84 blankets, all of which were donated by CRYP, Running Strong for American Indian Youth (RSFAIY) and other private donors.

Students from Wisconsin's Badger Catholic and Harborside Academy helped with the distribution, which mad
e for a fun day (although it was -7 degrees outside)! Thank you to those dedicated students for their hard work - we appreciate it so much.

January Hall of Fame:
Xander Red Horse

In the four-plus years since CRYP launched the innovative teen internship program, we've seen three types of participants: teens who complete one or two internships in different tracks, teens who complete all four tracks, and teens who fall in love with one particular internship and keep returning to it. Xander Red Horse falls into that last category.

The teen has participated regularly in the Sustainable Agriculture, or "garden," internship since the internship program's early days. He started coming to CRYP at age 12, drawn by the opportunity to play basketball in the Cokata Wiconi (Center of Life) teen center's full-size gymnasium was a huge draw. Then he discovered the internship program.

"My mother actually told me about the summer youth internship," Xander recalls. "She wanted me to do it because it would teach me a lot. I really like it. I've been doing it for almost four years now."
