Business News From The City of Frederick, Maryland November 2017

Hello
Tis the season, and with Black Friday just around the corner, here is an opportunity to understand Frederick’s hometown retail industry a bit better.
Frederick loves to buy retail goods as evidenced by more than $1.8 billion in consumer demand within three miles of the center of downtown Frederick. Frederick boasts more than 700 retail businesses in the City with 5,000 employees, including 200 retail businesses in Downtown Frederick, 150 along the Golden Mile, and 100 in East Frederick. Many are small independent retailers.
Retail businesses occupy approximately 2.3 million square feet of retail space in the City of Frederick or approximately 32 square feet of retail space for every one of Frederick’s 70,000 residents. Of course much of that retail serves a regional audience and the 1.7 million visitors from outside the region who are spending more than $1.0 million per day in our local economy.
Do your part this season. Shop local. Shop small. Shop often. Oh, and have a local meal and craft beverage while you are at it.
Best Regards,

Crossing those last few ‘hard-to-shop-for’ people off your holiday shopping list may seem like a daunting task. However, Frederick shoppers are fortunate to have a strong local retail scene with a supportive team of experts ready to help. We asked a few of these professionals to lend some initial advice when it comes to shopping for: the
Outdoorsman, the
Pet-lover, and the
Foodie on your list.
We hope you choose to take advantage of the many wonderful local options this coming holiday season!

In the spirit of the season, we decided
to visit some of these businesses to see what, in turn, they were grateful for.

A Frederick-based company flipped the modern business narrative and added a Brick and Mortar component to their existing E-Commerce.
After seven years in business online, Sue Richter founder of
Charlotte's Cottage Quilt Shop- bought a physical location for her Quilt Shop in Walkersville and, just this June, moved to her dream location on
Shab Row.
We asked Sue to share her unique experience with both business models.
