Percentage of Children Living in
Grandparent-Headed Household Has Doubled

Children's living arrangements have become more diverse over the past few decades because of the rapid changes in family behaviors, including an increase in the proportion of children living in a grandparent-headed household. One of our new Family Profiles,  Grandchildren Living in a Grandparent-Headed Household  (FP-18-01), tracks trends in the proportion of children living in a grandparent-headed household between 1940 and 2015. After a period of early stability, the proportion declined from 5.8% to 3.2% between 1950 and 1970. Since then,  the percentage of children living in a grandparent's household has more doubled from 3% to 8%. In 2015, nearly one in twelve children lived with a grandparent .

Study by Guzzo and Hayford Finds Adult Contraceptive Use Linked to Teen Knowledge, Attitudes

A study by Associate Professors Dr. Karen Guzzo, BGSU, and Sarah Hayford, OSU, indicates that attitudes and knowledge about contraception and reproduction that are learned as a teen have long-term implications for adult contraceptive behavior. The study, funded as part of a Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development grant, is the first to establish "a long-term linkage between adolescent reproductive knowledge and attitude and adult contraceptive behavior" and  appears in the January 2018 issue of Maternal and Child Health Journal.
