Saturday, March 24
11 am - 12 noon

ROAR's (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing a therapy dog to be read to by children. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. As they improve their literacy skills, they're not just learning how to read, they're learning to love to read! Children must read independently to participate in this program. No program charge, registration is required.

The Stars Beneath Our Feet
Miss Andrea recommends The Stars Beneath Our Feet by David Barclay Moore

Twelve-year-old Wallace (Lolly) is just like most kids his age - growing up and making important decisions. But Lolly feels lost after his brother's death and doesn't know how to cope. His one passion is building with Legos. Through a series of events in his after-school program he and an unlikely friend bond over their passion for Legos. Lolly later finds himself in a situation that could change his life forever and has to discover who it is he truly is on the inside.

Moore writes a poignant story about growing up in Harlem and dealing with uncomfortable situations. This is a "window" book - one that shares an experience outside of our community, and is a very valuable glimpse into the lives of characters different from ourselves. There are plot elements that are mature, so I would highly recommend this book to kids in 5th grade and up. It is an excellent read with fully fleshed-out characters of all backgrounds and a plot that keeps readers motivated to find out what decisions Lolly ultimately makes.
