Rector's Reflections

When Saying Yes Requires Saying No

It was one of those thought-for-the-day-calendars you find in your Christmas stocking. The sayings mostly were trite and pithy, but every so often there was a truth worth repeating, for example: "Decide what you want and what you are willing to exchange for it. Set your priorities and go to work." In other words, if we're serious, saying yes to one thing often requires saying no to something else.

Jonah-after fleeing from the mission to which God was calling him (and three days and nights in the belly of the fish!)-now says "No!" to his former urges and "Yes!" to God as he sets out as God's prophet to Nineveh. Paul invites us to say "No!" to trivial matters and "Yes!" to the things of God that have serious and eternal consequences. Jesus calls the disciples to say "No!" to their boats and nets and families and much of everything else they have known and to say "Yes!" to his "Follow me and I will make you fish for people."

We feel a kinship with Jonah's situation, because he struggles. He runs away from God and only relents after a huge fish vomits him onto a distant shore. The call-response stories of Simon, Andrew, James, and John make it all seem so easy. One little word of invitation from Jesus and these men turn in an instant from fishers to disciples.

But most of us live somewhere in the middle, not resisting God's call with the vigor of Jonah but certainly responding more slowly and ambiguously than the disciples. So a question for today is: To what is God calling us to say "No!"? Remember, it's not just the ugly stuff but often good things that must be denied for the sake of following Jesus. And then we must also ask in faith: To what is Jesus inviting us to say "Yes!"? [Sundays and Seasons, 2018]

Our Justice oriented interfaith Youth Group will gather 2:00-4:30 pm Sunday, January 21st at FCCW for a movie and popcorn. All in grades 7-12 welcome!

Our annual meeting will be held on Sunday, January 28th at 10:30 am following one combined worship service at 9:00 am. An expanded coffee hour will be offered, so you can enjoy a warm beverage and refreshments during the meeting. We will receive the annual report of our ministry together, the ministry plan/budget for 2018, and elect vestry members. We hope you can join us!

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Beth Smith
The above photo was taken at the Annual Meeting on Feb. 8, 2015

Beth Smith was born in Jacksonville, Florida and was the daughter of a Navy pilot.  She graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Zoology and Botany.   She met Paul at U Mass and they were married the year that they graduated in 1979.

Paul was a Naval officer and they lived in San Diego for seven years following their graduation. During that time Beth studied to become a respiratory therapist, and after completing her certification worked at the school where she received her training.

By 1985 the Smith family had added two children, and the family moved back to New England and settled near Springfield, Ma.  Paul became an insurance salesman and Beth taught at the local high school in Long Meadow, Ma.

The Smith's added their third child - two girls and a boy- in 1988, and in 1989 the Smith family moved to Goffstown, NH.  During this time period Paul noticed that corporations, school districts, etc. were not completely addressing the potential for flexible spending accounts.  These accounts handled Cobra payments and other benefit plans.  Soon Paul and Beth started a new company named Benefit Strategies which addressed that need. They opened a one room office in Manchester. The company began with modest results, and Beth relates that they lived on a limited and tight budget.  Today the company is very successful with accounts in all 50 states, and is doing especially well in New England.  It truly is a terrific  American success story.

About six years ago Beth and Paul moved to Wolfeboro.  Beth stated that, "we liked All Saints, and felt welcomed."

After working for the company for twenty-two years Beth stepped aside. Soon she started keeping the financial books for her housing association, and that soon expanded to also include Lord & Tailor, ECW, and Life Ministries Food Pantry.  Beth also is the treasurer for Friends of Music and All Saints Church.

Beth is highly respected for her work as Treasurer, and all of us benefit from her positive approach to this vital job.  We are grateful for the dedication that Beth brings to her ministry.

The above photo was taken of Beth Smith completing her Altar Guild duties was on Sept. 10, 2017.

The above photo was taken on Nov. 19th of this year as Beth Smith reported on the pledge drive.

Ralph Simons Ministry
The above photo was taken August 27th when Ralph, Holly and Michelle Coffey performed as the Offertory Trio, Jesus Hope of the Nations - B. Doerksen.  To watch and listen to this beautiful hymn click on the following link:   Jesus, hope of the nations

This fall Ralph Simons expanded his ministry with a position at Kingswood Regional High School to help a challenged student.  Because of this added commitment he found that he did not have the time to record, edit, and place the Sunday 10 AM Service on the local television station, and YouTube.

Giving up the weekly video ministry was a difficult choice for Ralph, and we thank him for his years of commitment to that endeavor.  Ralph is who we turn to when issues surface on our sound system, television sets in the Stevens Room and Parish Hall, web sites, including the E-News, and just about anything requiring technical knowledge with electronics.  We are fortunate to have Ralph as a valued resource in those important areas. His expertise with the E-News was - when I was beginning to edit the E-News - invaluable and his help continues to this day.  Well done my good friend.  Well done.

As a tribute to Ralph two hymns have been selected that Ralph performed this past August as part of a duet and trio. Please note that if you listen to these hymns, you will be constantly humming them for at least a day.  It was easy to access those hymns because Ralph created a time stamp for each Sunday Service that was posted on YouTube. The three hymns found in the choir section in this issue - including Jack Ferguson's wonderful solo - were accessed from the YouTube time stamp that Ralph created for the January 14th 10 AM Service.

The photo below was taken on August 20th. To listen and watch this beautiful hymn performed by Ralph and Holly click on the following link:   You Are Merciful to Me
