                 December
2017
From the Leadership Committee

A very happy holiday season to you and your families!  As we wind down an eventful year, our thoughts are turning to 2018.  To ensure that TTN continues to meet your needs for stimulating activities in a warm and friendly atmosphere, our leadership committee has arranged a full-day retreat for early December.  Our goal?  We'll map out our plan for the types of events you've found most rewarding in the recent past.  This includes lively panel discussions, conversations with inspiring women, small group discussions, and day tours that shine a spotlight on the DC area's world-renown cultural attractions.

Do you have a program idea that you'd like us to spin into reality?  And would you like to help us plan it?  We are always thrilled to receive members' suggestions, and we're ready to support you with both PR and logistics.  Contact Amy Kotkin at akotkin@comcast.net with your ideas, and watch them grow into fun and meaningful events that will attract fellow TTN members and their friends.

See below for a taste of what's ahead for 2018, and watch this space - we'll have lots of program news in the New Year!

All best wishes,

Renoir and Friends:
Luncheon of the Boating Party

TTN members at the Phillips Collection.

TTN members and friends enjoyed an in-depth tour of the Phillips Collection's outstanding new exhibition focusing on the friends who Pierre-Auguste Renoir depicted in his world-famous painting.  For many, this dazzling work epitomizes the spirit and style of the 'Belle Epoque' in late 19th-century Paris.  Guide Mark Westman toured us through the gallery, telling us about the fascinating bon vivants, fellow artists, actresses, and serious collectors, who comprised Renoir's inner circle.  Suzanne Wright, Director of Education, accompanied us throughout, offering insightful commentary on the place of this iconic painting in the Phillips Collection.  Museum conservator Lilly Steele explained her research on the painting, and showed us xrays of the surface which revealed the many changes that Renoir had made during the process of its creation.  It was a stimulating and multi-faceted morning!  See below for information on our next Spotlight on Washington Program at the National Air and Space Museum.

Spotlight on Washington: Women in Aviation at the National Air & Space Museum

Tuesday,
December 5, 2017

Time: 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Celebrate the contributions that women have made to aviation and space exploration on a  special private tour of National Air and Space Museum with docent Mike Deitchman.  From the famous exploits of Amelia Earhart to the lesser-known achievements of women like aeronautical engineer Beatrice Shilling,  inventor of  the provocatively named " Miss Shilling's orifice " -- a small metal disc that prevented engine stall in World War II fighter planes -- we'll marvel at stories and artifacts that bear witness to the sometimes unheralded impact of women on these critical fields. The tour will also include the Boeing Milestone gallery - recently remodeled with some of the most significant aviation and space exploration artifacts.  Stay on the Mall and enjoy lunch together.
