Today is International Women's Day, celebrated around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements and as a rallying point to build support for women's rights, health and economic equality. This year's themes are #PressforProgress and #TimeisNow.
In honor of International Women's Day, SDN/ZEKE magazine presents this special preview of the Women's Issue of ZEKE magazine, featuring documentary photography and articles by a global community of all-female photographers and writers. This project reflects on forced hijab in Iran, a literal and metaphorical boundary imposed upon Iranian women. Many Iranian women hate compulsory hijab, they see it as a symbol of oppression, forced upon them not by choice or personal beliefs but by an oppressive regime. For them it has become to represent the inequality and discrimination that Iranian women face because of their gender.
Called the 'canary in the coal mine' by climate scientists, the disintegrating ice-shelves and calving glaciers of the Antarctic Peninsula are releasing more and larger icebergs into the surrounding seas each year, with 2017 setting records. Antarctica contains ¾ of all the ice on earth, and with temperatures in some areas increasing more than twice the global average, ice-melt is increasing global sea levels with an alarming trajectory.
In the State of Jharkhand, in the northeast of India, the Damodar Valley became a hell on earth. The open-cast coal mines took over the forest. These mines have been active without interruption for over a century.
In the suffocating hostility of this environment, a desperate people sacrifice their lives for the economic development of India.
