Letter from the President: John Hornbogen, CPIM
IMA Members,

As expected, we are entering 2018 with a bang; embarking on a stream of events and activity across the industry.  In January, some IMA members attended and presented at PPAI in Orlando and many will also represent IMA atthe PPAI Expo in Las Vegas and ASI Dallas.  The IMA Summit and IMRA Marketing Conference planning committees are hard at work on the 2018 events with more details to release (specifically on sponsorship opportunities) yet this month.  We are closing out a year of networking, research and growth and moving into 2018 with plans of action.

A significant initiative for 2017, resulting in some of our largest action items for 2018, was the creation and launch of a 3-year strategic plan.  Later in this issue you will find more detail on that plan from Task Force Chair, Susan Gray.  The implementation of the plan began in 2017 and will progress through 2020.  The goal of strategic planning is to create a path that serves our membership so we welcome your feedback!

Nominations for the Karen Renk Award and Hall of Fame awards are being accepted now too.  Start thinking about that deserving person to nominate now.  Nominations will be accepted through April 30th.  We will also begin accepting IMA Board nominations soon. Stay tuned for more information.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season both professionally and personally.  I look forward to a productive new year for our industry!

IMA Strategic Plan Update
An association, like any other organization, exists to fill a need within society and to accomplish goals or objectives.  The association must be sure what its mission is to succeed.  The leaders of the association must ask themselves: "What is our business?  Who are our primary customers?  What does the association mean to the industry or the profession?  What do our customers want and value?  Are we accomplishing our goals?"  Any successful organization must continuously ask these questions and answer them truthfully so that it is kept on a clear path to fulfilling its objectives.  A critical part of this process is to have a clear and actionable Strategic Plan to guide the Association Leadership and most importantly its Members.

We are pleased to let our membership know that IMA's new 3-year Strategic Plan was presented and approved at the November IMA Board. The plan is a result of input from a member survey, a Task Force representing all IMA SIG's, the IMA Board and Executive Committee.  This new Strategic Plan is designed to guide our work and initiatives to keep us focused on the work that will provide the most benefit for our end customers, our members and our industry as a whole.

The 3 initiatives in our new Strategic Plan are:
  1. Marketing - Corporate Outreach and Public Relations (external communication)
  2. Membership - Member Engagement & Collaboration to provide value to all members (internal marketing & communication)
  3. Financial & Administrative Stability - Financially Stable with strong Association Management support
Within each initiative, the goals/objectives and action plans/tactics focus on the following themes:
  1. Collaboration
  2. Education
  3. Engagement
  4. Value Proposition
Please also keep in mind that IMA is a member driven association and to deliver on our new Strategic Plan it is critical that we have member support and involvement.  As we created this new Strategic Plan we have realigned and in some cases created new Task Forces and/or Committees to support the work.  Please take time to review the plan and note opportunities to serve.  If you have experience, passion or interest in any of the initiatives, we sincerely welcome your involvement.  Please contact the Task Forces/Committee Chair or Staff to find you how you can contribute.

Finally, thank you to all those that contributed to the creation of this new Strategic Plan.

IMA/IMRA Booth at PPAI Las Vegas
January 14 - 18, 2018

We are just finishing up with PPAI's annual Expo and it's proved to be the best year yet with diverse vendors, attendees and education sessions. IMA and the SIGs have worked with PPAI for several years to help provide information to their members regarding the advantage of selling incentives to their customers and how to do it.

Our initiatives paid off well, as this year IESP members Sean Roark, CPIM and Mike Donnelly, CPIM, IESP and IGCC member Cindy Mielke, CPIM, IMRA member and President Chris Harrison and IMRA & ITC member Marc Matthews, CPIM, CIS  all lead an education session How Promotional Product Professionals Can Access Incentive Resources.

This year, the IMA and IMRA booths will be inside the IMRA Lounge area. Come by and visit!

A number of marketing initiatives and education tracks are in place to drive traffic to the pavilion.

This fast pace show attracts thousands of distributors.  Reserve your space today and be a part of the action!

2017 Philanthropy Campaign Results

Each year, IMA selects a charity to support through a philanthropy campaign that launches at the annual IMA Summit and runs through the end of the year.  In 2017 our chosen charity was Give Kids the World Village

We want to take this moment to thank all of the companies and individuals who supported our efforts this past year.  Over the six months of the campaign you contributed $9,000 in cash, gift cards and merchandise.  Give Kids the World Village, located in Kissimmee FL, was significantly impacted by Hurricane Irma and we are so honored to be a part of an industry that came together to support this amazing organization through that difficult time.  Your generosity provided light in the lives of multiple families whose lives are riddled with doctor appointments and treatments for an ill child.  THANK YOU!

Important Trends in Motivating Sales Channel Performance: How Millennials Can Help Us Adapt to a New Performance Landscape
January 08, 2018
An IESP Perspective
For brands looking to gain mindshare and loyalty with independent distributors and dealer salespeople, the rules of the game are changing. Traditional "do this, get that" incentive programs are still valuable, but are no longer a differentiator that generates long-term brand loyalty. Distributors, partners, sellers and customers are all looking for "more" from brands.  With their work preferences and values, millennials are helping to define that "more" and may be the spark to help companies move beyond a simple, "coin-operated" approach to sales channels.
