Issue 13 | Feb 28th, 2018
Dear Friends,

Two years ago, I launched a pilot program in the County to help give drug offenders with a sincere desire to be rehabilitated another chance to be fully contributing members of our community. Modeled after a successful program in San Francisco, our program was called "Back on Track," and participants would agree to plead guilty, but follow a strict program instead of doing jail time. They would attend Prince George's Community College (PGCC), participate in community service activities, and submit to regular screenings. After successfully completing the program, all charges would be expunged from their records.

I am so proud to report that yesterday, we held our first graduation ceremony for the program. Our inaugural class was small, but support was big -- from program partners including members of law enforcement, county government and the greater community. In addition to the two graduates, three current participants were also present, who will shortly begin a certification program at PGCC.

The mood at the event was overwhelmingly upbeat and positive, the highlight being the most critical aspect of the program for the graduates -- when Judge Lamasney expunged the participants' charges, giving them a fresh start at a productive life.

I continue to have faith in the human spirit and potential. With the support of the community, we can continue to move small hills -- and mountains.

Sin cerely yours,

Angela

Maglev -- Should Prince George's County Be on Board?

In a recent article in the Greenbelt Times , our candidate discussed the proposed maglev train that, if developed, would run through parts of Prince George's County. A maglev (magnetic levitation) train is a high-speed train that runs on technology involving magnets. allowing trains to accelerate and decelerate quickly. The train in current discussions would take passengers between Washington and Baltimore in approximately 15 minutes. Here are excerpts of the Greenbelt Times article:

"Bringing the maglev train to the County would displace homes and businesses and would threaten to raise property taxes. It would also harm the environment, putting trees, wildlife habitat and green space at risk.

It would be an expensive venture and thus not economically feasible for the County. The projected cost is expected to be between $10 billion and $12 billion. Japan has financed $5 billion thus far and I am skeptical that private funding would cover the rest. I have a duty to ensure that we are good stewards over the hard earned dollars of Prince Georgians and I do not feel that this would be a responsible act.

The cost to ride would be high and inaccessible to many Prince George’s County residents. I am interested in finding transportation solutions that would benefit the whole County and be cost effective.

The route does not include any stops within the County which is why I am concerned about communities like Greenbelt, Bladensburg, Bowie, Laurel and Riverdale which would be affected by the maglev’s existence, but gain no tangible benefits.

I am paying close attention to the timeline regarding the maglev’s environmental impact statement and permit requests and if I am elected as your next County Executive one of my top priorities will be to stop the maglev initiative. "
