MMA Releases Statement on Gun Violence
Since the Valentine's Day shooting at a Parkland, Fla., school, the country has debated and discussed the issue of gun violence in new and meaningful ways. The MMA is no different and on March 3 the association's executive committee approved a public statement on the topic, pulling together past policy approved by the MMA's board as well as an expansion consistent with AMA policy. New Bill on T21 Introduced in House
At a press conference on March 8, Rep. Dario Anselmo (R-Edina), introduced a bill to restrict sales of tobacco products to Minnesotans under the age of 21. Read more here
MMA Submits Letter of Support for Revised Health Records Act
On March 6, the MMA submitted a letter in support of HF 3312, which proposes modernizing the Minnesota Health Records Act so that it aligns with HIPAA standards. Read more here

New MEDPAC Board Appointed
The MMA Board of Trustees recently elected a number of new board members for MEDPAC, the MMA's political action committee. In addition, Will Nicholson, MD, was named chair and Ken Crabb, MD, as treasurer. Read more here.
Save the Date: LGBTQ Health Forum Scheduled
Following its successful health equity forum in January, the MMA will host a forum on LGBTQ health.  It will be an opportunity to do the following: raise awareness of the unique health needs of the LGBTQ community; raise awareness of the health disparities faced by the community and the root causes of those disparities; and identify strategies for creating a welcoming, supportive and quality clinical environment for the community. The forum will take place on May 15 at the University of Minnesota Campus Club. Reception will be from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by the two-hour program. Deadline Extended for Med students, Residents and Fellows Research Program 
The deadline for medical students, residents and fellows to submit abstracts of original research or clinical vignettes for possible inclusion in Minnesota Medicine has been extended to March 15. The submissions demonstrating appropriate quality will be selected for publication in the magazine and authors will be invited to present their work in a poster session at the MMA's 2018 Annual Conference in St. Paul. Submissions should be no longer than 500 words plus references. Research abstracts should include a brief description of the research problem, methodology and results, and a discussion of the findings. Clinical vignettes should include a description of the case, the diagnosis and treatment approach, and a discussion of the implications of the case. Submit your abstracts and vignettes here.
