A groundbreaking study published in Science Advances by neuroscientists at Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College in collaboration with Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan in Israel, is the first to identify large-scale differences between surface fish and cavefish populations of A. mexicanus, as well as between different populations of cavefish... Erik Duboué, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, and Prof. Yoav Gothilf of Tel Aviv University have received a $320,000 grant from the US-Israel Binational Science Foundation for their work on the neuronal and genetic basis of anxiety. Duboué, a molecular geneticist, has conducted extensive research on how the brain perceives, processes and responds to changes in the environment. He has studied fear behaviors in the zebrafish, whose small size and transparency permits monitoring activity of neurons in the brain in vivo. His work is shedding new light on how neural circuits are altered in fear/anxiety disorders... Read More

Student Spotlight
Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Alums, Roberto Hernandez (Class of 2016) and Rubens Tavora (Class of 2018), have each been awarded prestigious fellowships to pursue their doctoral studies at International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) and Skaggs Graduate School at Scripps Research Institute. After being accepted to the IMPRS program, Hernandez has been recognized as a Max Planck Fellow and will continue his doctoral research of the influence of the acid base balance in neurotransmission in Dr. Greg Macleod's lab at Wilkes Honors College of FAU. After conducting research in Dr. Macleod's lab for two years, Távora was recently awarded the Schimmel Family Endowed Fellowship for his pursuit of a Ph.D. at Scripps which he will begin this fall term. Both fellowships will support each student's studies for the next three years.
