Koenen Named Athletic Director of the Year
|
Congratulations to Gary Koenen, CFHS Athletic Director, who was named the
2018 Athletic Director of the Year for the State of Iowa, as well as,
the 2018 Northwest District
Athletic Director of the Year.

As an athletic administrator, Gary has been an active member of the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association. He has held various leadership positions for the Northeast District of the IHSADA, including District Director. He also is the current chair for the athletic directors in the Mississippi Valley Conference and the Cedar Falls/Waterloo metro area. He was recognized as the Northeast Iowa Athletic Director of the Year in 2013 and received the Administrator Award from the IHSAA in 2016.
Over his career, Gary has been most proud of the outstanding student participation of the athletic and activity programs he has led (over 86%) and the development of student leadership opportunities for Cedar Falls students. During his tenure, Cedar Falls High School has captured 26 state titles in 10 different sports.

Holmes Delegation Meets with Legislators
|
A delegation from Holmes Jr. High school including Jenna Atkins, Kunyu (Kimi) Du, Brendan Moody, Simon Plassman, Harri Surnedi and staff member Logan Mork traveled to the State Capitol to visit with legislators about the positive impact After School programming has had on them. The delegation met with Representatives Bob Kressig, Walt Rogers, Senator Jeff Danielson as well as a number of other legislators while showcasing their After School Science Club.
The students from Holmes traveled to the Capitol to visit with policymakers about the importance of After School programming in Iowa schools.
Iowa's youth are faced with many demands and challenges - more rigorous academic standards are expected within the current school day, and, in Iowa, most parents are out of the home working for several hours after the school day is over.
After school promotes high quality programming for youth that leverages the learning day and links with the greater community, recognizing
that after school programs in local communities provide essential learning and s
ocial supports that fill basic needs for many of today's students and families. After school programs n
ot only provide a safe environment for kids when parents are not home, but they are in a unique position to foster relationships among youth
, parents, and their communities to maximize learning opportunities and provide much-needed guidance and support. After school programming helps provide our children and youth with the tools they need to succeed in school, work and life. The delegation appreciated the opportunity to visit with legislators about their experience in After School programming at Holmes Jr. High.
Science Club at Holmes is an open invitation club that meets weekly after school. Three Holmes classroom teachers, one high school teacher, and one member of the community currently coach the After School program. The main goal of science club is to engage students in scientific thinking and engineering activities and to provide an enriching, supportive environment for students interested in science. Students work in small groups to create projects (towers, roller coasters, robots) as well as learn about select topics (diseases, thermodynamics, invasive species).
Every year, a team of students prepares for and competes in the Iowa Science Olympiad competition, a statewide event that sends groups to the national event later in the spring. We have routinely earned a top 3 placement in the competition and students have a great time showcasing their projects and knowledge.

FIRST Robotics Competition
|
More than 60 high school teams from Iowa and surrounding states will compete in this year's competition. By the time they arrive at the McLeod Center, they will have spent more than six weeks designing, building and programming their robot to compete against other teams, maneuvering through tasks required by the competition. Each year, the theme and tasks differ.
This year, the Power Up theme means that game characters (robots) and their human operators will be trapped in a video arcade game. To escape, the robots will need to use power cubes to control switches and a scale, pass power cubes for power-ups and then ascend to the "boss" at the end of the match.

Practice matches will be held on Thursday, March 22, and qualifying matches will be held on Friday, March 23. The best day to watch the competition will be
Saturday afternoon, March 24.
Final matches will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with and award ceremony to follow

Incoming Kindergarten Parent/Guardian Meeting
|
All elementary schools in Cedar Falls will be holding a parent/guardian meeting for 2018-2019 incoming kindergarten students on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. A snow make-up date has been set for Thursday, March 22, if school is cancelled on the original date.
All meetings, with the exception of Aldrich Elementary, will be held at each respective elementary building. The meeting for Aldrich Elementary will be held at the District Administration building, 1002 W. First Street.
Students who will be five on or before September 15, 2018, are eligible to begin school this fall. At this parent/guardian-only meeting, the full-day kindergarten program will be described and classroom teachers, school counselors and nurses will be introduced. Parents/guardians will have the opportunity to complete registration packets, tour the school and become acquainted with other kindergarten parents. Parent/guardian attendance also assists schools in planning for the fall in terms of space, staffing, materials and resources.
Parents/guardians of eligible students are asked to contact the school in their attendance area prior to the meeting. If parents/guardians are not certain of their attendance area, please call the Cedar Falls Schools Administration Building at 319-553-2423. Know Your Meal Account Balance Before You Shop A La Cart

Parents/guardians - please remind your child(ren) to know their meal account balance BEFORE shopping a la carte. This will save them time at the checkout and help eliminate food waste if funds are not available to cover the purchase amount. All students have the ability to check their meal account balance from their PowerSchool account. Once logged into PowerSchool, access the Balance tab, then on the top of the Family Meal Account Balance is displayed.

Boundary Maps Updated for Fall 2018
|
It's an exciting time in Cedar Falls Schools! With the addition of a new elementary and work on two other buildings, there is much activity and anticipation. Part of the transition to a seventh elementary in Cedar Falls includes boundary adjustments. The boundaries were revised by a committee of parents, community members and staff in spring 2015 with board approval following the committee's recommendation. The School Board reviewed and approved the boundary map in the fall of 2017 to take effect in fall 2018.

Holmes - all of Hansen Elementary, North Cedar Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Aldrich Elementary north of University Avenue

Students residing in the Aldrich attendance area will be attending Aldrich Elementary for the 2018-19 school year; rule exceptions will only be considered for extreme circumstances and will be very limited in number. We know change can be difficult and we want to make sure the transition goes as smoothly as possible for all students and families. To help students with the transition to Aldrich, meetings will be held with the current 5th grade students at Southdale and Lincoln who will be moving to Aldrich. Ms. Kim Cross, principal for Aldrich Elementary, will be sharing more information with these students and families.

at each elementary building, Aldrich families will be meeting at the Robinson Administration Building at 1002 W. 1st Street.
In regards to Junior High - elementary students who will attend Aldrich, but live south of University Avenue will go to Peet Junior High and elementary students who will attend Aldrich, but live north of University Avenue will go to Holmes Junior High. This is the only elementary that will have split feeder schools for junior high, but this allows the District to keep enrollment numbers balanced at both buildings.
Regardless of which school a child attends, one thing is certain; they will continue to obtain the same quality education they are receiving in their current building, with all the same opportunities to grow!

Schedule a Check-Up at Kindergarten Round-up

Kindergarten Round-up Parent/Guardian meetings are scheduled at each elementary building during the evening of
Tuesday, March 20
. It is important to get your Kindergartener's annual physical scheduled along with dental and vision exams. Immunizations must be up to date by the start of the 2018-2019 school year. Please bring a copy of your child immunization record and a copy of all other completed exam forms to the Round-up event. Please contact your elementary school for more details.
