finalarticleState Legislative Update

The Florida state legislative session is set to officially end this Friday, however the yet-to-be-approved budget will likely cause Governor Scott to extend the session or call a special session as the House and Senate continue to negotiate payments to Florida's hospitals. Read more.

In response to the school shooting in Parkland, the Governor outlined a plan to address gun violence in the state. Florida senators passed a bill that takes into account some of the Governor's points, such as new restrictions on rifle sales and mental health programs, while disagreeing with the Governor on others, such as including a provision to allow some teachers to carry guns in schools. The House was debating the legislation well into the evening on Wednesday, March 7th. View the bill page for the outcome.

The Florida Medical Association, county medical societies, and state specialty societies have been active this session following healthcare legislation, and providing support or opposition when necessary. Issues such as fail first protocols, retroactive denials, maintenance of certification, and the opioid epidemic are among the hot topics still in debate. Stay tuned for a full recap coming soon.
