Voice of the Vestry
by Glen MacPherson

"It's the Homeless Newspaper!  Only one dollar suggested donation, otherwise free.  Get your Homeless News, right here!" It's a baritone incantation, more melody than carnival bark, beautiful in a way, a non-threatening siren.  George was peddling his publication as we stood in line for the State Theater.  Tracie procured us a copy then proceeded inside while I chatted with George.  Having read a previous issue where he eulogized Bill Montgomery, I asked if he was looking for other sources of The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, or, The Economist.  He told me, "No, maybe eventually, but Ann hasn't cancelled the subscriptions and still brings them.  But, you know, click here to continue reading...

Interim Choir Director Announced
Welcome Jason Hubbard!
We are excited to have Jason join us in our music ministry! He is an accomplished musician, choral director, teacher and administrator; working with artists, musicians, and students of all ages. A native of Kansas, Jason earned his BME from Pittsburg State University (in Kansas), a MM in Choral Conducting from The University of Oklahoma, and a Graduate Certificate in School Administration and Supervision from The Johns Hopkins University. Currently, Jason is the Assistant Vice-President for Academy Programs at Interlochen Academy for the Arts. He says his role is that of a principal, leading academic and arts programming for the Academy. Before arriving at IAA in the fall of 2017, Jason spent fourteen years with the Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, LA, working in a variety of positions, including Associate Head of School (most recent), Arts Director, Director of Choral Activities and as the Department Chair of the Arts Dept. Jason also served seven years as Choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Church, Baton Rouge; and the Bass Section Leader prior to that. He also has experience as a Director of Music, working with community churches in Oklahoma City and Joplin, MO. We are so pleased that Jason is sharing his many gifts and talents with Grace Church!

Seeking volunteer help with our website
Do you have web skills? We need you!! We are looking for volunteers to help us manage our website and work with our team to revise it. Please contact Kathryn+ if you are interested.

Church Directories are here!
The new parish directory is ready for you to pick up. It contains the list of parish members with their contact information. It also has a new section at the end called Friends of Grace. The directories are at the church each with a name label so you can easily find yours. Pick them up in the Commons during weekend services, or in the office during the week. The separate photo directory, which will be published soon, will contain the front section as in the last one and the photos with names of all those who had their picture taken in 2016. Many thanks to the Directory Committee: Kate Wood, Lynn Feeter, Maxcie Latimer, Gloria McClay, Nancy Templeton, Steve Wade, James Deaton, and Sandy Seppala Gyr, who worked tirelessly to complete the project.

Episcopal Peace Fellowship letter-writing
on March 24 weekend
in support of gun law reforms
The Episcopal Peace Fellowship of Grace is very proud to share some of our recent projects and accomplishments with the Grace family. The EPF chapter at Grace is the only chapter in the Diocese of Western Michigan, and is an organization dedicated to focusing on contemplation and action regarding issues of justice and peace.   Recently, Betsy Davidson, who has been a committed member of EPF since 2007, has become a member of the National Executive Council of EPF for a two year term.   This is an honor for our local chapter and a way for EPF to better understand how to develop peace and justice initiatives on a local and national level. We are grateful for and proud of Betsy's efforts.   In addition, the EPF will be holding a gun-reform writing campaign on the weekend of the Bishop's Workshop at Grace, on March 24.   We encourage everyone to join in this effort to encourage legislators to enact gun reform. We would also like to invite you to attend any EPF meeting. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:00pm at Jubilee House. We would appreciate your interest and input. If you have any question regarding EPF issues, please contact Betsy Davidson at [email protected] or at 231-313-6013.

Overnight vigil in the Columbarium
at the Altar of Repose
March 29 - 30

Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?"
Matthew 26:40

We will have an overnight Vigil following the Maundy Thursday service and the stripping of the altar. This is a sacred tradition observed in many parishes following the Maundy Thursday service. We respond in obedience to Jesus' question to Peter (and to us), "could you not watch with me one hour?"

We ask that members of the parish volunteer to keep vigil at the altar of repose and pray for one hour periods. The Vigil will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Maundy Thursday in the Columbarium. The Vigil will continue until the Good Friday liturgy at noon. This is a holy and prayerful time to humbly 'meet at Jesus's feet', with the eternal oil lamp burning to signify that the consecrated bread and wine are present. We encourage you to sign up for one hour - a sign-up sheet is in the Commons. You may wish to enlist a friend to sit with you as a team. If you have any questions, please contact Dixie Stephen (922-5909).

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
