A MESSAGE ABOUT OUR MISSION
John Williams, Executive Director
As a growing organization, we're often focused on what lies ahead, but it's also important to pause and reflect on recent accomplishments.
One of the things we tackled over the winter was to rework our mission statement.
Mission statements are important for a couple of reasons: (1) they describe what you do, and (2) they serve as filters to help guide decision-making and future direction. It had been many years since the last mission statement was created and the organization has continued to grow, mature, and evolve since its inception. The time had come to insure we have a mission statement that accurately states our purpose and why we exist.
For those of you who have had experience creating a mission statement, you know the work involved. It is a fun and challenging exercise with the goal of developing an inspiring statement that summarizes what an organization does, preferably in 14 words or less. Our process involved pulling together a small task force to solicit input from the community about the important parts of what we do, and then to piece together the words and phrases which we felt best exemplified the day-to-day activity at 317. I am pleased to share with you our new mission statement:
317 Main's mission is to encourage creative expression, personal growth, and community connection through music.
We hope that you share our enthusiasm for the clear statement of purpose for this wonderful community-supported organization. As always, thanks for all you do to help make this place a treasured community resource.

WHY YOUR 11-16 YEAR OLD SHOULD GIVE BANDROOTS A TRY!
Last fall we launched a new program called
BandRoots that's intended to serve as a bridge between private lessons and making music in a band with friends.
Currently, we have two groups running with teaching artists John McCain and Brad Longfellow. The students who are in BandRoots love it, but we hear from other students all the time, who tell us they don't think they're "good enough" to join. They are! BandRoots was created for students who are brand new to ensemble playing.
Click on this video to see and hear what Bandroots students say about the experience.

If BandRoots doesn't fit into your schedule this spring, sign up for one of our Jam Camps this summer! These week-long camps for 10-15 year olds are all about learning to make music with friends in a relaxed and supportive setting.

GETTING TO KNOW LULA WILES
|
L-R Mali Obomsawin, Ellie Buckland and Isa Burke |
The members of Lula Wiles say they sensed their chemistry the very first time they harmonized during a late night jam at Maine Fiddle Camp. Flash forward and this all-female trio is now touring nationally, making a name for themselves in the Folk/Americana scene.
317 Main is delighted to be presenting Lula Wiles in concert on Saturday, March 24th at First Parish Congregational Church.
We wanted to get to know this talented trio a bit better before the show so we posed a few questions.
You can read our interview with Isa Burke that starts with the burning question...

Callie Hastings
Little Roots Educator
We are pleased to welcome
Callie Hastings
to our growing Little Roots Team. Starting in Spring Session, Callie will lead our Saturday morning classes. During the week, Callie works with the toddlers at Breakwater School in Portland. She's also a painter with a fine arts degree from Alfred University.
Teaching Artist
Eli Gilbert
will leave us this spring to head out on the road with Dreamcatcher, a bluegrass band made up mostly of fellow East Tennessee State University grads. Good luck, Eli!
We thank both
Meg Baxter
and
Dan Rose
for their service on our board. 317 Main is a stronger organization because of your contributions!
