Bondi Weighs Legal Fight Against Opioid Makers, Distributors

Pam Bondi on Thursday said Florida could soon pursue legal action against manufacturers and distributors of opioids."

According to the article, the purpose of the potential litigation is two-fold: accountability and compensation. Bondi said, "Look at what we are facing in this state. I'm over them. Over them. They need to fix their conduct." Meanwhile, the costs associated with the crisis are staggering. For example:
- In 2016, there were 5,725 deaths attributed to opioids, a 35 percent jump from the previous year
- More than 4,000 babies were born addicted to opioids in Florida that year, a 1,000 percent increase from a decade ago
Bondi said money is needed because the costs for treatment are expensive and that there are a lot of Floridians who simply cannot afford it.

U.S. healthcare uninsured rises most in near decade

1.16.18 that "The number of Americans without healthcare insurance rose by 3.2 million people between 2016 and 2017, or 1.3 percentage points to 12.2 percent, according to a
Gallup poll released on Tuesday."

This is the biggest jump in the uninsured rate in nearly a decade, according to the author.
