SIAC Champion Panthers Honored by Orangeburg City Council
|
Orangeburg City Mayor Michael C. Butler, '83, (center) and members of the City Council stand on Tuesday, March 20 with the Claflin University Men's Basketball Team Athletic Director Dr. Jerome Fitch, Head Coach Ricky Jackson, Vice President for Administration Drexel Ball at City Hall after the mayor read a proclamation honoring the team for winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Tournament Title. The proclamation declared Wednesday, March 21 "Claflin Men's Basketball Team Day" in Orangeburg.

Claflin Hosts Annual UNCF Community Luncheon

On Thursday, March 22, Claflin University will host its annual UNCF/The College Fund Community, Business, Industry and Friends Kickoff Luncheon in Ministers' Hall. The purpose of the luncheon is to raise money for scholarships.
The musical entertainment for this year's luncheon will be Christoph' McFadden, a sophomore music education major and member of the Claflin University Concert Choir. He is also a member of the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College and a 2018 UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.
Tickets for the luncheon are $25 and can be purchased by calling Dr. Iris D. Bomar, associate vice president for Institutional Advancement, at (803) 535-5722 or (803) 535-5376.

Claflin Celebrates Women's History Month with Events and Luncheon

Claflin University will celebrate Women's History Month with a schedule of events. March has been designated Women's History Month since 1987. During the month of March, the nation recognizes the history, contributions, and notability of women.
On Friday, March 23 at noon, Claflin will host a luncheon with guest speaker
Casey Sharperson, '13, in Ministers' Hall. K
nown as The Confidence Cultivator, Sharperson is a speaker, blogger, and coach. She is uniquely gifted to cultivate the confidence within others to take them from undervalued, underappreciated, and unclear to purposeful, profitable, and living their dream. Named DMV's Top 30 under 30, she is passionate about merging faith and business to unlock her client's potential.
Casey graduated with honors from Claflin University, as a member of The Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College, where she was named Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities and earned national recognition by being awarded the Cultured Pearls Leadership Award, which was presented at Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated's Boule in 2012. As a senior in college, she authored L.E.A.P: A Comprehensive Tool to Market Study Abroad to Minorities, serving as a catalyst for her entrepreneurial work.

Claflin to Host Beauty, Health, & Wellness Expo During Women's History Month
|
Claflin University will host its second annual Beauty, Health, and Wellness Expo (BHW Expo) on Saturday, March 24 from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center. The purpose of the BHW Expo is to promote beauty, health, and wellness awareness. Proceeds from the Expo will support The Evening of Elegance Scholarship Program.
The BHW Expo will feature presentations from beauty, health, and wellness experts including Tracy Sanders, Esq. of Natural Hair and Law. There will also be vendors and corporate partners at the BHW Expo including Hope Health, The Regional Medical Center, Family Health Center, Orangeburg Area Mental Health Vocational Rehabilitation, NAACP - Health and Wellness Initiative, Joseph H. Neal Wellness Center, American Heart Association, Natural Hair and Law, Paparazzi Accessories, AiloCep, and Butterific Shea Butter.

Renowned Photographer, Author, and Filmmaker Dr. Peter Krogh
to Present at Claflin's Lunch and Learn Lecture Series

Renowned photographer, author, and filmmaker Dr. Peter Krogh will present at Claflin on Monday, March 26, at noon in the H.V. Manning Library. Krogh's appearance is part of the "Are You Booked for Lunch?" lecture series hosted by the library. The program is free and open to the public.
For 30 years Krogh has created compelling visual images for editorial and commercial clients, who need to send a message, tell a story or connect with an audience.
In the last decade, Krogh has become one of the world's foremost authorities on digital asset management and workflow. He has worked with companies that create the digital photography ecosystem, such as Adobe, Microsoft, iView, Phase One, CRU, O'Reilly Media and PhotoShelter.
Krogh has worked with institutions that represent the interest of photographers such as the U.S. Library of Congress, IPTC and World Press Photo. He served on the board of Directors of ASMP and founded and chairs the Digital Standards and Practices Committee.
Krogh's consulting clients include Delta Airlines, the World Wildlife Foundation, The Discovery Channel, Frans Lanting Photography and Johns Hopkins University. He has presented, taught and led workshops worldwide, including all over the U.S., Canada, South Africa, China, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Italy. His books have been published in English, Spanish, French, and German.
In 2012, Krogh received the Individual Innovation Award from the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program, an initiative led by the Library of Congress.
Krogh lives in Kensington, Maryland, with his wife Alyson and daughters, Josie and Maddy.

Claflin Competes for Campus Improvement Grant in Home
Depot's Retool Your School Program

Claflin University is among the list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) competing for grants to beautify and upgrade their campuses through the Home Depot's Retool Your School program. This marks the ninth year of the program and participating schools are divided into three clusters based on student enrollment. There will be one (1) $50,000 Grand Prize Grant, one (1) $40,000 2nd Place Grant and (1) $30,000 3rd Place Grant recipient per cluster. Claflin is in Cluster 2.
Schools that record the highest total of votes through social media or receive a high score for their project proposal will be considered for a campus improvement grant. Voting can be done by using the school's designated hashtag (#Claflin_RYS18) or on the RYS website.

Claflin has vigorously solicited votes from students, alumni, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders since February 24 when the program began. The competition ends on April 15 at 11:59 p.m. The Office of Communications and Marketing is encouraging the campus community to vote by hosting Italian ice parties, giveaways of Claflin paraphernalia, and coordinating voting competitions between student organizations and administrative departments.
"We need the entire Claflin Family to help us win this competition," said George Johnson, assistant vice president of communications and marketing. "We intend to use the grant for an environmentally conscience project that will enhance the beauty of our campus."

Dr. Kimberly D. Russaw
, visiting assistant professor of religion and philosophy, was inducted into the prestigious Society for the Study of Black Religion
. The Society for the Study of Black Religion is the oldest scholarly society dedicated to the study of the African-American religious experience. It is dedicated to scholarly research and discussion about the religious experiences of Blacks. Also, Dr. Russaw's monograph, Daughters in the Hebrew Bible, is now available for purchase. In the book, Russaw argues that daughters are more than foils for the males (fathers, brothers, etc.) in biblical narratives and that they often use particular tactics to navigate antagonistic systems of power in their worlds. In 1974, the International Alumni Association of Claflin University established an annual convention to discuss alumni affairs, recognize distinguished alumni, and develop ways to continue supporting our Alma Mater.
"Visionary Leaders Embracing Diversity in the 21st Century" is this year's theme as our Alma Mater continues to demonstrate its commitment to its legacy of nurturing, preparing, and developing visionary leaders.

Do you need transportation to the 2018 CUIAA Convention in Atlanta, Ga.? Come ride with members of the Orangeburg County Alumni Chapter to the convention. The bus will leave from the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center (Claflin University) on Thursday, April 4 at 9 a.m. and return on Sunday, April 8, 2018. The cost is $75.00 roundtrip. The artwork of
Kenish Magwood, '13, is currently featured in Viridian Artists' "30 Under 30" exhibit. The art gallery, located at 548 W. 28th St #632 in Chelsea, NY, features cultural and political artwork selected from artists nationally. The exhibition ends on Saturday, March 24. Magwood is an art teacher at Baptist Hill Middle/High School and a freelance artist.

Claflin Sweeps SIAC Baseball Weekly Accolades
Darrell Langston was selected as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) baseball Player of the Week and teammate Cleveland Westbrook was named the Pitcher of the Week. It was announced on Wednesday, March 21 by the league.
Langston, a senior outfielder from Chicago, Ill., helped lead his team to a 3-1 record during the week, including a 3-0 start in SIAC play. He hit 9-of-14 to boast a .643 batting average. He recorded six runs scored, two doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs to complement nine RBI.
During the Panthers' three-game series sweep over Lane, he went 7-of-10 at the plate with six runs scored and eight RBI. He also notched all his home runs and triples for the week during those games to hit .700 for the series. He highlighted the first game of the doubleheader with four hits and a pair of two-run homers to power Claflin to a 17-0 win.
Westbrook, a juinior from Miami, Fla., threw a complete game shutout and engineered Claflin to a 17-0 win over Lane in SIAC play. He threw seven innings recording a season high 11 strikeouts while giving up just one hit. The win gave him his first back-to-back wins of the season.
Claflin will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to face Morehouse College in a three-game series this Saturday-Sunday, March 24-25.
