Interested in engaging your staff with a Fresh, NEW, Alternate learning style that is becoming popular amongst adults?
The concept involves Applied Experiential Learning - setting up or creating an experience, having participants engage in the experience, observing their reactions, and then performing a psychological debrief following the experience to facilitate learning. The Health & Science department here at MHC has realistic life-like simulators (Human-kind, as well as an ambulance SIM).
One of the Experiential Learning events MHC Continuing Studies Department conducted involved the Emergency Response Team from Canadian Fertilizers Limited. The individuals came into three different simulations that were set up to reflect emergency life-threatening situations that could potentially occur in the environment in which they work. The participants were caught off guard during the first scenario as they did not realize they would be dealing with an emergency simulation upon arrival at the Medicine Hat College that day. The reactions of the participants were observed and once the simulation was over, participants then had to debrief and discuss the events that had just unfolded.
The SIMS are very life-like; they can bleed, lose pulse, speak, go into cardiac arrest, etc. Experiential Learning also sticks, with employees recounting the experience months and even years after the simulation event. Nowadays we see this is true with the increasing number of 'escape room' experiences popping up as a common form of adult entertainment.
Some of the comments received from the Applied and Experiential Learning: Medicine Hat College and Canadian Fertilizers Industries include:
- "...Thanks for cultivating the culture of learning"
- "Makes it a far better learning experience. A more lasting experience - remember for more than a month or 2 as with past scenarios"
- "[It was] Very valuable. Allowed a much more "real life" experience. ...It was great to see how I reacted. Before I had no clue how I may respond, now I have an idea"
- "It was more interactive. [I] had to make more decisions"
- "Broke the regular routine. Paid more attention because I was more awake and engaged"
- "Gained a lot of experience and confidence by practicing. This may be something that we could do annually"
Simulations can also be developed for other scenarios as well - everything from Natural Disasters, bomb threats, and bank robberies to the more mundane everyday workplace scenarios, such as dealing with a difficult customer, a challenging employee, or an irate boss.
Wondering how your company, organization, group, or non-profit can benefit from Applied Experiential Learning? Contact our Corporate Training Officer - Wes Paterson (P) 403.504.2248 (E) [email protected] and ask how you may qualify to receive up to 2/3 of your employee training costs reimbursed through the Canada-Alberta Job Grant Program.
