A Message from the
Superintendent

I hope you and your family had a safe and enjoyable Spring Break. It was great to welcome your students back to school on Monday. Many of you know that I particularly enjoy the beach. We made a quick beach trip last week and took two of our grandchildren with us.
Our high school college counselors, Chris Mayfield (LHS Principal), Dennis Muizers (Deputy Superintendent), and I have been reviewing the issue of whether it is in the best interest of LHS graduates to rank them beyond the Top 10% as required by state statute. We are recommending a major change to our board this evening, and I would encourage you to read the detailed explanation below which was written by our Deputy Superintendent.

Over the course of this school year, we have conducted another study of the issue of class rank of high school students. As you know, current legislation requires all Texas public high schools to rank the top 10% of the graduating class. Tonight, the Board of Trustees will adopt the following changes to our local class ranking policy, which will begin with the Class of 2019 for students who are not ranked in the top 10% of the graduating class:
- Students will have the choice of opting-in to his/her class rank being reported on the transcript; and
- Students must submit the "Class Rank on Transcript and Transcript Release" Form by the last day of the first grading period of their Senior year.
After a thorough review of the admissions policies of the universities most often attended by our graduates, as well as reviews of the rank, GPA, SAT and/or ACT scores of our prior graduating classes, and in combination with universities expressing a more supportive admissions environment regardless of whether a district chooses to rank or not rank students outside of the top 10%, we feel this policy change will be helpful to Lovejoy graduates.
The goal of our local ranking policy has always been to ensure that our graduates are seen in the most favorable light during the college admissions process. These changes place the most control possible in the hands of parents as they consider the pros and cons of whether to include rank on their child's transcript during the college admissions process. Our college and career counselors at LHS will certainly continue to be helpful resources as students and parents navigate the college admissions process.

Willow Springs Middle School, in partnership with the Grant Halliburton Foundation, will present an important event tomorrow evening focusing on suicide prevention.
The "Lovejoy ISD Community Forum: Focus on Teen Suicide Prevention"
will be held in the Willow Springs Middle School Cafeteria beginning at 7:00 PM. This presentation is designed for all community parents, Lovejoy ISD staff and students. We hope you and your family will join us for this important discussion.

State Competion

The Lovejoy Powerlifting Team's Ally Carraway was the first-ever girl from Lovejoy to compete in the girl's state meet this past Friday. Lovejoy's Kade Ashley will compete this weekend at The Boys State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene. Congratulations to both of these fine athletes on a great season.

100K for 100 Years Challenge

One pillar of our Lovejoy Graduate Profile is for students to be engaged in a healthy lifestyle. In an effort to promote this positive quality within the community and celebrate the Lovejoy ISD Centennial, we invite everyone to participate in the 100K for 100 Years Challenge.
The 100K for 100 Years Challenge is an opportunity for participants to log 100 kilometers of exercise through any of the following activities: biking, rowing, swimming, running, or walking. The 100K must be logged by May 1st.

Congratulations to the following students participating in the Fairview Rotary Speech Contest held Thursday, March 8th at the Heritage Ranch Country Club: Raheel Ahmed, Sydney Barker, Garrett Beckman, Zach Farrell, Sarah Michal, Darby Price, Pierce Richardson, Anna Rouse, Chase Stevens, and Taryn Sutherlyn. The Fairview Rotary Club honored the following students with scholarships: Anna Rouse - 3rd Place; Sarah Michal - 2nd Place, and Chase Stevens - 1st Place. Chase will represent the Fairview Rotary at its district meet on April 7th.

USAT Taekwondo
Texas State Championships

Alison Johnson
, a Lovejoy High School Freshman, won the sparring event at the USAT Taekwondo Texas State Championships in the 15-17 year-old Women's Black Belt Middle-weight Division. This tournament qualifies Allie for the USAT Taekwondo National Championships to be held in Salt Lake City in July. In addition to the State Championship, Allie received an Academic Achievement Award given to all school-aged athletes who have maintained straight As for the current school year. Allie has qualified for this award each of the five years she has competed at State. Allie trains under Master Chris Adamson at House of Dragons Taekwondo in Frisco where she also teaches as a Junior Instructor. She is a Second Degree Black Belt. Congratulations, Allie.

Student Athlete of the Year
|
Two Lovejoy student athletes have been nominated for the 2Words, Student-Athlete of the Year. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Senior Bradley Davis was nominated for organizing a fun run called Running Over Depression. His efforts raised thousands of dollars to help raise awareness about depression. Bradley is also a captain on the cross-country team and has won back-to-back state titles in Cross Country.
Senior Meredith Ehlmann spearheads Relay for Life, a massive fundraiser to help fight cancer. Meredith is a three-year letterman on the girls' basketball team and is the Historian for the National Honor Society.

Dallas Mavericks Classroom Champion

Earlier this year, Hart Elementary School 3rd grade teacher Erin Goff was named a Dallas Mavericks teacher of the month. The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host its 12th annual Denim and Diamonds Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano. This year's theme is a Lone Starry Night. Foundation for Lovejoy Schools Chair, Carrie McClure and Co-Chair, Aimee Peay welcome you to a night featuring dinner, entertainment and live auctions.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host a raffle for three great prizes, which includes:

WSMS Color Guard
The WSMS Winter Guard competed in the NTCA Cadet Class State Championships on March 10th at Mansfield High School. The Willow Springs Color Guard earned 1st place to claim the school's first Championships win. Congratulations to the WSMS Color Guard.

WSMS Orchestra
On March 7th and 8th, the Willow Springs Orchestras participated in the Region 25 UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. For the first time in Lovejoy Orchestra history, every middle school orchestra student performed in this contest. Each group brought home wonderful awards. All of the judges commented on how professional the students were. Congratulations to these musicians:

Lovejoy Baseball
The Varsity Leopards opened 15-5A play on Tuesday, March 13th at home against the Highland Park Scots. The Leopards fell 1-0 to the Scots. Both pitchers threw very well in this close match-up. The Leopards then traveled to Highland Park on Friday, March 16th and defeated the Scots 3-1 to bring their 15-5A record to 1-1. The Varsity Leopards closed out the week in Plano against the Plano East Panthers. The Panthers defeated the Leopards in another close game 4-2. The Varsity traveled to Mesquite to take on the Wranglers of West Mesquite and came away with a 12-0 win. The Wranglers will travel to Leopard Park on Friday, March 23 for another 15-5A District Series game against our Leopards at 7:30 PM.
The JV Red Team Plays tonight at Leopard Park against Highland Park at 5:00 PM. The JV Black defeated the Wranglers last night 15-1 and will play before the Varsity on Friday at 4:30 PM against the JV Wranglers.

Lovejoy Golf
The Leopard Golf Team will return to the links today with the JV Boys and Girls playing in the Rockwall Invitational at the Rockwall Athletic Club (site of the 2018 15-5A District and UIL Regional Tournament scheduled for later this spring). The Varsity 2 Boys Team will play this Friday and Saturday at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Course in Keller. The District 15-5A Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 2nd and 3rd at the Rockwall Athletic Club.

Lovejoy Boys Soccer
The Boys Varsity Leopard Soccer team defeated the North Forney Falcons 7-0 on Friday, March 5th in North Forney. The Leopards defeated the Mesquite Poteet Pirates 2-1. The Varsity Leopards will complete their 2018 regular season in Royse City on Friday. The Leopards have clinched a State Playoff berth. The Varsity Leopards will play in the UIL State Playoff Bi-District round game at a time and place to be determined.
The JV Boys clinched the 2018 15-5A District Championship with a victory over the North Forney Falcons 4-1. The JV Leopards played the JV Mesquite Poteet Pirates last night and came away with a 3-0 win. The JV will close out their 2018 season Friday in Royse City against the JV Bulldogs.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
The Varsity Lady Leopards played the North Forney Lady Falcons on Friday, March 5th at Leopard Stadium and came up short 2-1. The Lady Leopards were off during Spring Break and returned to action last night against the Mesquite Poteet Lady Pirates in Mesquite. The Varsity Girls Soccer came away with a 5-0 loss. The Varsity Girls will close out their season this Friday against Royse City at Leopard Stadium at 7:15 PM. Come support our 2018 Seniors on their last home game of the year.
The JV Lady Leopards were also in action against North Forney and lost 1-0. The JV returned to the field last night against the Lady Pirates of Mesquite Poteet. The JV Ladies lost 2-0 to the Lady Jackrabbits. The JV Ladies finish their 2018 season on Friday night in Leopard Stadium against Royse City. Game Time is scheduled for 5:15 PM.

Lovejoy Softball
The Varsity Lady Leopards had a tough, two-game stretch during Spring Break. The Lady Leopards were defeated by the Forney Lady Jackrabbits 16-1 on Tuesday, March 13th and then dropped a heart breaker to Wylie East in extra innings 7-6 on Friday, March 16th. The Lady Leopards were back in action last night against the Lady Falcons of North Forney at Leopard Park. The Lady Leopards came away with a come-from-behind 9-8 win. The Varsity Lady Leopards will travel to Mesquite Poteet High School this Friday to take on the Lady Pirates.
The JV Lady Leopards played Forney on Tuesday, March 13th and lost 19-1 and then traveled to Wylie East on Wednesday, March 14th and lost 14-3. The JV returned to Leopard Park last night to play North Forney High School. The JV lost to the Lady Wranglers last night 8-1. The JV will travel to Mesquite to take on the Lady Pirates of Mesquite Poteet.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Varsity Tennis Team will travel to Allen this weekend to compete in one of the toughest tournaments in the State. This tournament will prepare our Tennis team for the District 15-5A Tournament scheduled on April 3 and 4 at Lovejoy and Allen High School Tennis Courts.
The JV Tennis Team will return to action on Friday, April 13th at the Lovejoy Tennis Courts for the District 15-5A Championships.
The Willow Springs Tennis Team defeated the Denison Yellowjackets Middle School 25-2 on Thursday, March 8th. The WS Team defeated the Allen Erickson Tennis Team in a dual match yesterday at Leopard Courts. The WSMS Tennis Team's next match will be against Allen Erickson and Allen Curtis next Tuesday, March 27 at the Lovejoy Leopards Courts.

Lovejoy Track
The Leopard Track Team was busy before Spring Break with a meet in Argyle. The Varsity Boys team finished fourth and the JV Boys finished in third place. The Varsity Girls finished in fourth, as did the JV girls. The Lovejoy Distance Team hosted its annual Lovejoy Spring Distance Festival on Saturday, March 10 at Leopard Stadium, and they also competed Saturday, March 17th in the Texas Distance Festival in Southlake Carroll. The Track Teams will be competing in the Plano Invitational on Friday, and some members of the Track Team will compete in the Annual Jesuit Sheaner Relays on the campus of Dallas Jesuit Saturday, March 24.

BYOP® (Volleyball Spring Session)

BYOP® Program Overview
: This training program is designed for any volleyball player, no matter what skill or ability level, as long as their goal is to become the best they can be. Parents must be fully dedicated to being actively involved in this program. BYOP® will provide excellent volleyball fundamental skills training, as well as life lessons to both player and parent.
BYOP® Program Details
: Each training session will build upon a solid foundation of all fundamental skills needed to participate in the sport of volleyball. Parents must be engaged in every training session and involved in the home training program involving physical and skills activities.

Safety and Security
Safety and security remains one of our highest priorities. We have specific plans at each campus in response to a security breach. We continue to consider additional measures to address both the perception of safety, as well as the actual safety on every campus.
We would like to ask for your assistance. If you have information about a threat to the safety of a student, staff member, campus, or the district, we ask you to report it.
SafeSchools is our online safety compliance program, which is specifically designed for school use, incident management, and bullying reporting. This program allows students, staff, and parents to report tips on bullying, harassment, intimidation, weapons, drugs, or other threats to school safety by e-mail, via website, text, or by calling 469.919.5861. This system allows us to stay connected and to prevent incidents before they occur. Staff are immediately notified of every tip, and can effectively track and manage incidents to resolution in this web-based system. Multiple administrators throughout the district monitor submissions to assure entries are addressed in a timely manner. Once a tip is entered, tipsters can easily check on the status of their tip and remain anonymous. School officials are notified through e-mail when tips are created and/or updated.
Posters are displayed in every classroom and hallways throughout each of the Lovejoy campuses, providing information as to how to enter a tip.
If you have information about a threat to our safety, do your part and report it. Please remember, you may remain anonymous.

Gifted and Talented Referrals for 2018-2019
The referral window for gifted and talented services is open for students in grades 1-12 through March 31st.

The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. 24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition
Now Through April 15th
Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. LHS Softball Presents Future Leopard Night
March 27th
The Lady Leopards Softball Team will host Future Leopard Night on Tuesday, March 27th. The team will play Royse City with a 5:00 PM start for JV and a 7:00 PM start for Varsity. Planned activities include a candy raffle during both games, joining the varsity players on the field for the National Anthem, a keepsake varsity poster for all elementary students, an autograph session following the varsity game, and other surprises. Bring your softballs to have them signed by players before and after the games. Admission will be free for all elementary students. Help the team fill the stands and cheer the Lady Leopards on to victory.

LHS Baseball Presents Little Leopard Night
April 6th
The Lovejoy Varsity baseball team will host Little Leopard Night on Friday, April 6th. The team will play Wylie East High School. The Lovejoy Elementary Choir will perform the National Anthem. All elementary students attending will receive free admission into the game, and will have the opportunity to join the Varsity players on the baseball field for the National Anthem. Relay for Life is an annual event which will be held at Willow Springs Middle School to raise awareness of cancer and to donate to cancer research. Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may

to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Willow Springs Middle School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10. Treasured Vessels Foundation

The Treasured Vessels Foundation (TVF) is a local, non-profit which assists adolescent girls who have been recovered from domestic sex trafficking. TVF is building a secure community of tiny homes that will provide 24/7 therapeutic programing, with an emphasis in trauma-specific care. The program provides the tools these children need to develop a vision for a new healthy, happy and independent life.
You are invited to partner with TVF on May 10th at the Allen Event Center for a benefit concert featuring Emerald City Band and Lovejoy band "Friday Night School". You may purchase tickets at the box office or through Ticketmaster.
