PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Vacation time is over and it's back to work. We're already half way through our fiscal year already. This year is going quickly. Good programs, many new members and a great fundraiser were all positive accomplishments for the first half.

The Nominating Committee is elected and working to find officers for next year. I feel very lucky to have a great Board presently. I know the committee will find equally efficient women for next year. Call me if you would like to be in a leadership role in this exciting Branch of AAUW, empowering and helping women from pre-K through adult.

Vero Beach is a very strong Branch, boasting one of the largest memberships in Florida as the count approaches 160. Yet over the past few years we consistently have about 40 women at our meetings. I know many of our members are older and we value their memberships whether they can attend meetings or not. They help to make our many programs viable as do all our members. However, many members still do not attend the meetings. If there is a reason for that, I would like to hear from you. If you need a ride to a meeting, call our Members Helping Members Chair Gilda Barkley-Avelar at 321-6384. Otherwise, please reconsider, come to our meetings and give us a chance to know you better. Thanks.

Joyce Burkett
President
AAUW, Vero Beach Branch.

The following article is written by Joyce Levi about Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Frazier. Joyce is a present member of our Branch and a past president. It may give you a snapshot of Elizabeth and Joyce Levi as leaders of AAUW Vero Beach.

Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Frazier
by: Joyce Levi

During a recent phone call to AAUW Life Member the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth H. Frazier, she didn't sound 102 years old, her current age. Still spry and forward-looking, she was delighted to get news of Vero Beach and our AAUW Branch. Here during the 80's and 90's and into the 21st century, she wrote:

AAUW membership broadens horizons,
stimulates thinking, removes stereotypes
and gives women a respected place to fight.
AAUW/VB people, causes, activities and
meetings will always be an important part
of my lifetime memory treasures.

Elizabeth was one of the first women to graduate from Yale Divinity School, and it was there she encountered AAUW. She served as president of the New Haven Branch, the second oldest in the country. Her profession took her to numerous states and AAUW branches. Many years later, she and her husband Dr. Donald Frazier served as pastors in Vero Beach. She was introduced to our local
AAUW Branch at a Dodger Pines luncheon in 1984, later serving on the board and offering many invocations at our AAUW meetings. Her Art of Writing Invocations has appeared in many of our yearbooks since then. She once remarked that her best advice as we grow older is to "use it or lose it." Now living in Connecticut, she sends her love to all.
Dues

It is almost time to pay our dues again. Although the deadline is not until June 30, you are able to pay them as soon as you receive your renewal form . Please send them to Barb Spelman or pay with a credit card or Pay Pal on line before June 30th. It makes the Handbook so much easier to do. Think about that when you receive your renewal form. We on the Handbook Committee would be very appreciative.
