Message from our President

Dear Fellow Serrans and Followers,

Happy new year!  As we conclude a snowy and bitterly cold Christmas season, let us turn our thoughts to the new year.

2017 was, to say the least, a challenging year.  We continue to live in a world of political conflict, dangerous unrest and persecution, including Christians in many places.  Seldom before have our prayers been needed more.

Our faith should remain the rock on which we stand every day.  Our love of God, our families, our friends, and our neighbors in need should never waiver...as well as that for the Church, the focal point of our religious expression.

We are guided by our priests, deacons, and religious, the lifeblood of the Church.  And while we undertake to improve our own lives in the new year, let us maintain our strong support of seminarians everywhere...the future foundations on which the Church will thrive.

God bless you in this new year.  May you and your families, both near and far, find love and joy as 2018 dawns around us.

Letter from the Editor

Dear Serra Members and Followers,

This months newsletter will cover Dec 2017 and Jan 2018. Yours truly had some trouble moving furniture and crushed a bone in his lumbar. If anyone ever tells you to lift with your legs,I would take their advice. My wife was telling me that right before I saw the flash of light. And no it was not the Holy Spirit. In any case we have an exciting newsletter for you this month. We would also like any   feedback you may have to help us improve or enhance this newsletter as well.

Annual Christmas Choral

On December 3rd St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Norwalk hosted the annual Christmas Choral performed by the seminarians from St. John Fisher Seminary.  The seminarians entertained over one hundred guests with meaningful advent readings and beautiful antiphonal chant.  The Serra Club assisted with the post- performance reception.

"Walk with Saint Junipero Serra as he traces our Lord's footsteps in search of workers for the vineyard."

A Franciscan missionary Saint Junipero Serra is well known as the 18th century founder of a string of California missions. Like Saint Serra, the Serrans of today put faith into action. Whether through meetings, vocational programs, or personal involvement in school, parish and diocesan activities, Serrans accept the challenge of fostering vocations and encouraging spiritual growth.
Let St. Serra inspire us to nurture vocations and become missionaries ourselves as we work for vocations. The USA Council Program Committee invites you to carry out this program of renewal by which all Serrans recommit themselves to furthering Serra International's principles and objectives.
If you want to know more about our patron, please read the in-depth article, "Missionary Disciple: The Spirituality of Saint Junipero Serra" by Father Joseph Chinnici, OFM, historian and President Emeritus of the Franciscan School of Theology at Oceanside, CA.

World Day of Consecrated Life

February 2, 2018 (Celebrated in Parishes February 3-4)

In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church.

Prayers of the Faithful

For those consecrated to God by the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience that they may seek to live their baptismal promises more intensely and have the grace to persevere in their commitment to the Lord and serve with open hearts and willing spirits. We pray to the Lord...

For those who have responded to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to be a consecrated person that they may experience the support of the Church as they continue their growth in holiness. We pray to the Lord...
