International Favorites and Travel to India
Thank you to Nidhi Agrawal for leading our first parent-child cooking class - International Favorites - on Friday, January 19. The participants enjoyed making healthy recipes with their children.
The next workshop - Travel to India - is for adults only and takes place on Sunday, February 11. Kerri Scheib will be choosing wines to pair with the dishes that Nidhi will be teaching.

National Geography Bee
Romeo V., a 5th year in Patrick's class, was the winner of the 2018 WHMS Geography Bee. As s
chool champion, Romeo then took an online qualifying test. If he passes that test, he will move onto the statewide bee.

Upper El students enjoyed fun and games at their Fun Night on Friday, January 12.

|
Gender Identity speaker Lyndon Cutlitz spoke to Upper El and Middle School students on January 22. The presentation addressed the messages people receive about sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. One parent shared this with Susan, "I want to applaud you and the school for having so many wonderful and varied opportunities for children, parents, families, etc. to experience different people and ideas. You go beyond teaching/supporting 'tolerance' to emphasizing appreciation, understanding and respecting differences."

Kindergarten Pinning
On Friday, January 19, 38 Kindergartners received a pin to mark their role of leadership in the classroom. Each student stood up, introduced themselves and shared their age and their favorite classroom work. The students also sang several songs before receiving their pin from Susan.
Afterwards, they were treated to a breakfast with their family from the Friends of WHMS. We want to thank the Friends and Kristi Berner for chairing the event. We would also like to thank Golden Harvest Farms, Crisan Bakery, and ShopRite for their support of the event. |

Board of Trustees News
Vikash "Vik" Agrawal was voted onto the WHMS board of trustees on Monday, January 29.
Vik is a healthcare entrepreneur who has built several successful businesses over the past twenty years. He recently served as executive chairman for Estransmedia, a healthcare IT firm that he co-founded in 2000.
Vik earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and holds dual master's degrees in management and chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His bachelor's degree in chemical engineering is from the Indian Institute of Technology in India.

Why did you choose WHMS for your family? We fell in love with the way the school focused on each child's needs and desires. Loved how much respect they gave to our children from day one.
What do you appreciate most about WHMS and Montessori education? I appreciate that our kids not only learn the basics in education but are surrounded by culture and are taught to develop an understanding and love towards every person they encounter. I also appreciate how they are taught to make decisions for themselves; because of this they become confident and independent.
Please share a favorite Montessori memory: I would have to say attending a Voyage and seeing firsthand how a lesson on a specific subject is done with the students. It really made me thankful this is how my children are learning everyday instead of the more traditional way I was taught.
Why did you join Friends of WHMS? I knew from the beginning I wanted to be an involved parent and figured
Friends of WHMS was a good start. I still believe this to be true!
Why should parents get involved with the Friends? What benefits do they gain? You get to see firsthand all of the activities and extras our children benefit from thanks to this organization and be a part of making it all happen. The largest benefits I have gained have been building friendships as well as having a true sense of the community WHMS has to offer.
What do you enjoy doing when not serving on the Friends board? I enjoy cooking and golf. One I am good at and the other I still have lots to learn! You can guess which is which. :)

Siena College Art and Essay Celebration

WHMS students attended the opening reception and exhibit at Siena College for the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Original Art and Writing Invitational at Siena College on Friday, January 12.The artwork from 18 WHMS students was on display for this year's invitational, the theme of which was Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote, "
We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now."
