AHEPA Honors Community Service Excellence in Dallas
AHEPA hosted a Regional Banquet, themed "Philotimo,"  to honor excellence in service to the community in Dallas, Texas, Jan. 27.  More than 350 persons attended.  

Program highlights included:
  • The Mary Kay Foundation, an organization headquartered in Dallas dedicated to finding a cure for cancers that affect women and finding an end to domestic violence, presented a $20,000 grant to Penelope House. The AHEPA family presented Kirsten Gappelberg, director, Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability, Mary Kay, Inc., with a special recognition for the Mary Kay Foundation's work to meet its mission.
  • Austin Street Center, which provides safe shelter and meets the basic needs of the most vulnerable homeless of Dallas, received a special recognition for the programs and services it provides. The programs include: work readiness, permanent housing preparation, and specialized outreach to veterans and women, among others. Austin Street Executive Director Daniel Roby and Advancement Manager Charlotte Baker accepted the award.
  • Dean Xeros received a special recognition for volunteering at Austin Street Center, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Center, and preparing and serving a countless number of meals to the homeless at the Center.
  • Basil Xeros received an AHEPA Excellence in Community Service Award for serving the Greek American community of Dallas and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church since 1939. 
  • The AHEPA family of Houston conveyed appreciation for the AHEPA family's raising of more than $70,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. 
AHEPA Happenings | Winnipeg Chapter Donates $10K to Local Food Bank, Awards $7K in Scholarships

Congratulations to AHEPA Polikos Aster Chapter CJ8, Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The chapter donated $10,000 to Winnipeg Harvest, a community food bank, and presented $7,000 in scholarship awards to five students during its Hellenic Gala. From 1990 to 2017, the chapter has awarded $141,000 in scholarships.

Cyprus Presidency Goes Into Runoff Round as Economy Dominates

Cypriots will return to the ballot box on Feb. 4 to choose a leader who can oversee the Mediterranean island's economic recovery nearly six years after the country came close to financial collapse.  Incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades, 71, will face Stavros Malas in the runoff after taking 35.5 percent of the vote Sunday compared with 30.3 percent for Malas, an independent candidate backed by the leftist Akel party, according to Cypriot Interior Ministry figures.  read more 
 
Israeli president to attend Greek holocaust museum ceremony

Israel's president has met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras during a visit to Athens that will include a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a Holocaust museum.  Reuven Rivlin also met with his Greek counterpart, Procopis Pavlopoulos, in the capital on Monday.  On Tuesday, Rivlin and Tsipras will travel to the northern city of Thessaloniki for the museum ceremony.  Thessaloniki's 55,000-strong Jewish population was deported by Nazi forces during World War II and most of its members were murdered in German concentration camps.   read more  additional coverage
 
'Potential is great' in Greek-Israeli relations, President Rivlin tells Kathimerini

There are no limits to the scope of cooperation between his country and Greece, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin tells Kathimerini ahead of his visit to Athens on the invitation of his Greek counterpart Prokopis Pavlopoulos. "We like to say the sky is the limit, but perhaps, as we are neighbors on the Mediterranean, the sea is the limit," he says poignantly in regard to ties between the two countries, pointing to the areas of security and the fight against terrorism, of technology, medicine, agriculture, bilateral trade and tourism.  read more 
    
Pavlopoulos calls on FYROM to avoid name with irredentist claims

In comments made during a televised exchange on Monday with Israel's President Reuven Rivlin, Greece's Prokopis Pavlopoulos declared that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will be unable to join NATO as long as there are signs of irredentism.  read more   
   
Enhancing the gods

According to the first century traveller Pausanias, the Athenian sculptor Pheidias cast the bronze figures for Athens' dedication at the important Panhellenic sanctuary in Delphi in ca. 465 BC (10.10.1).  At Delphi, Pheidias, the young sculptor, would have had opportunity to peruse the treasuries situated along the Sacred Way. We can imagine his eyes and intellect becoming beguiled by the extravagantly decorated Siphnian Treasury: its sculpted friezes and pediments were already proving to be influential among Greek artists.   read more

Giannis Joins Hundreds of Greeks to Sing National Anthem

All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo stayed behind after the game against the Nets on Friday to meet hundreds of Greeks waiting patiently to get a glimpse or a handshake from their hero.  Giannis was overwhelmed by the presence of so many Greek fans. He took the mike and sang the Greek national anthem, before he climbed the steps of the arena to meet them.   read more and watch the video!
