A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY

As the narrative of the Book of Exodus shifts from leaving Egypt and slavery behind, to becoming a nation, we find God giving the Israelites the Ten Commandments.  Without going into detail about the Commandments themselves, I find myself wondering why God is so eager to give them that the Deity only waits 3 months to deliver them.  One might imagine that God would give the Israelites a bit more time to bask in their newfound freedom before burdening them with myriad laws, rules, and regulations.

In order to answer this query, I think that we need to go back to the Book of Genesis. Actually, we need to look at the very beginning of that Book.   Therein we are told that at the beginning of God's creation, the world was unformed and void (many commentators tells us that this means that the world was in chaos).  And then God said, "Let there be light."  With that statement, God began putting the world in order.  God formed this, created that, and established a weekly paradigm.  Thus, at its core the creation story is an effort on God's part to get things just right.  God's plan appeared to proceed very nicely until Adam and Eve pulled the stunt with the apple.  After that, things became increasingly disordered.

In the Book of Exodus God is, yet again, starting a new venture of creating order.  This time by, and through, the Israelites.  However, they were slaves who suddenly became free after 400+ years of humiliating subjugation. Given humankind's poor history, one might imagine that God would be concerned with the possibility that the Israelites could completely lose control.

In order to avoid this seemingly inevitable chaos, God seeks to provide, preemptively, order. God does this by giving the Israelites a paradigm through which to live their lives.  The Ten Commandments, and the rest of God's laws, create a system with the clear goal of keeping the Israelites "ordered".  Whether that system has been successful is subject to much debate.

I believe this to be the lesson: Chaos will occur.  When our lives become chaotic, the best thing to do is to try to create order.  Once order is at hand, we can create a plan to move forward.

God as Redeemer; God as the Giver of Structure; God as Teacher.  That's not chaotic.

Shabbat Shalom - Michael S. Jay

T RAVEL TO ISRAEL WITH THE JCC OF LBI

The JCC trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Massada, to many museums, and more. At Massada we will be sharing in a bar mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers. What joy!

The JCC's first trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Masada, to many museums, and more. At Masada we will be sharing in a bat mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers.

We will be immersed in Israeli history and culture and, at the same time, we will get to better know our selves, and each other.

So far an extraordinarily nice group of people have chosen to travel with us.

This trip that has been designed both for the person who has never been to Israel, and for the person who has visited frequently.  Come be a part of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.

In addition to a set itinerary, we will have some evenings where we will be free to explore on our own.  We will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we will be.

The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, ITC can help you to make arrangements.
