RECTOR'S ANNUAL MEETING ADDRESS
"Reflect, Renew, Reaffirm"
In a very personal and transparent Annual Meeting address, The Reverend Ryan D. Newman, reflected on 2017 and set a course for All Saints' in 2018 to actively engage in the work of renewal and reaffirmation, especially during the Rector's sabbatical period.

"Too often, I believe clergy are not transparent enough with their congregations," said Rev. Ryan. "Usually what happens, a priest holds in most of their stress, frustration, anger, and disappointment until a breaking point—and when that breaking point comes about—usually the clergyperson leaves his or her congregation with little or no notice. I don’t want that to happen here at All Saints’."

Rev. Ryan prayed that 2018 be a profound year of reflection, renewal, and reaffirmation for All Saints'.

Annual Meeting Election Results
Congratulations to Joe Adorno and Nelson Secretario who were elected to the All Saints' Vestry for three-year terms.

Also, congratulations to Mary Margaret Smith was re-elected to serve as the Junior Warden of the Vestry.

Jean Nakamoto, Mary Schulz, Nelson Secretario, Vikki Secretario, and Mary Margaret Smith were elected as Diocese Convention Delegates. Linda and David Crocker have agreed to serve as alternates.
RECTOR'S FORUM ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11 at 11:00AM
The Finances of All Saints'
During last Sunday's Annual Meeting address, Rev. Ryan announced that he would forego the "tradition" of talking about the Church's financial situation. Instead, Rev. Ryan and the Vestry plan to host a Rector's Forum on Sunday, February 11th at 11:00AM that will focus on the financial future of All Saints'.

As Rev. Ryan said in his annual address to the congregation, "We have a few significant financial challenges and opportunities before us this year and in the years to come. Rather than talking about those financial challenges and opportunities today, I would like to host a Rector’s forum where the focus of the conversation can be our financial future and sustainability. At that time, we can talk about “all things financial”—the good, the bad, and the ugly."
Ministry Council Meeting, Saturday February 3
The next Ministry Council meeting is scheduled for this Saturday, February 3rd, at 9:00AM in Memorial Hall.

All Saints' Ministry Council began meeting quarterly in 2017. The Council brings together lay leaders representing the various ministries of the Church. Linda Crocker and Jan Hashizume serves as the Ministry Council Co-Conveners.

One of the stated goals of the Ministry Council in 2018 is to plan an event where people gather and learn about the various ministries and service opportunities at All Saints'.
PALM CROSSES NEEDED
Ash Wednesday ashes made previous year palm crosses
palm crosses
Ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made from the burned palms from previous Palm Sunday services.

We are asking our 'Ohana to please bring in their old palm crosses to be used for the preparation of the ashes. Crosses can be left in a basket on the table at the church entrance during the next two Sundays.
ASHES TO GO
Annual ministry prepares to hit the highway again
Fr. Ryan and others will again be on the sidewalk along Kuhio Highway offering "Ashes to Go" for those who are unable to attend Ash Wednesday services. Ashes to Go will be offered 9:00AM - 11:00AM and 4:00PM - 6:00PM.

Annually, All Saints' distributes ashes to over a 100 people through this ministry. The ministry is open to everyone--share the news with others on the island! Volunteers are always needed to assist with the imposition of Ashes on Kuhio Highway.

Ashes to Go began in 2010, when three Chicago-area Episcopal churches took ashes to the train stations, bringing them to busy commuters. It was a hit and went viral in 2012, exploding across the nation. Ashes to Go is now being offered not only by Episcopal Churches, but many different denominations.
UPCOMING WORK DAYS
Saturday Church Work Days start at 8:00AM and last a couple hours.

Saturday Workdays are vital to the stewardship and preservation of our All Saints' Campus. Our 'Ohana is blessed with a beautiful campus and numerous buildings. However, these amazing resources require a great deal of ongoing maintenance and preventative care. It is our call and duty to properly care for our Church home--not only for this generation; but, for many generations to come.

There are projects for all ages and all abilities. Please come and volunteer.

NEWS FROM THE DIOCESE
Bishop Fitzpatrick shares an update on Peter Pereira & Sandy Graham
Peter Pereira, the Diocesan Treasurer, and Sandy Graham, the Canon for Congregational Life & Leadership, had surgery on Monday (January 29), and all is going well. Peter was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2016. In the months since, many people in the Diocese presented themselves for testing as possible donors. Sandy proved to be the best candidate. After extensive testing right up to Monday, the transplant surgery took place Monday morning. They agreed that I could share the good news with the Diocese.

Barring complications, Peter will be in the hospital for four to seven days. He will be in isolation, and cannot receive flowers or visitors. Cards may be sent to the office. He will be out of the office for four to six months.

Sandy will hospitalized for two or three days, and is scheduled to then be out of the office for two weeks (and unable to fly for two months).

O Lord, your compassions never fail and your mercies are new every morning: We give you thanks for giving our brothers, Peter and Sandy, both relief from pain and hope of health renewed. Continue in them we pray, the good work you have begun; that they, daily increasing in bodily strength, and rejoicing in your goodness, may so order their lives and conduct that they may always think and do those things that please you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mahalo,

+Bob

THIS WEEK IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
February 04: People See Signs and Miracles
As Jesus travels and heals, a multitude of people follow him into the hills. Seeing that they are hungry, he finds a boy with five barley loaves and two fish. Jesus makes the crowd sit down. Then he takes the bread, gives thanks and feeds all of the people. Amazed, the people want to make him king, so Jesus goes away into the hills by himself.

Jesus’ disciples then go into a boat on the Sea of Galilee, when a storm blows up. Jesus walks on the sea to the boat and calms their fear, and suddenly the boat reaches land.

The next day, the people are amazed to see Jesus on the other side of the sea, and they wonder both at the miraculous meal the day before and at his miraculous travel. But Jesus talks to them as the Son of God, and they begin to doubt him and question him.

Even Jesus’ disciples complain, “This is a hard saying,” and, unbelieving, begin to leave him. At the end of Chapter 6, Jesus is left with only a few disciples, one of whom is Judas.

The people in today’s stories are impressed by his miracles and his commanding presence. When he invites them to believe in him and be transformed, however, they respond with skepticism and cynicism, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” (v. 42).

We too can be tempted to turn to religion and to spirituality for self centered reasons, in order to gain prestige, comfort, friends or votes. Or we can be tempted to go to church to “get something out of it”—a good sermon, a bit of good feeling. Jesus tells us to follow God because God gives life. Jesus gives life; he is the Bread of life.
