What to know about Seizures and Dogs
Watching your pet have a seizure is a terrifying thing to witness. One minute your dog seems perfectly normal, then suddenly he's on his side, eyes glazed, muscles twitching frenetically. He may even lose control of his bladder or bowels. A result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, this episode may last only seconds, but when it happens, time seems to move in slow motion.
Did you know that an animal is allowed to have one seizure every 30 days without concern from the medical field? HOWEVER, if your pet has two or more seizures within a 30 day period, you need to see your veterinarian; discussion for medication needs to started along with tests.
With each seizure, more nerve cells within the brain will begin to fire randomly. Per Dr. Podell, "The brain's threshold for seizure may lower on a constant basis." In other words, each seizure makes it more likely that another one will occur. This in turn can make the seizures progressively more difficult to manage.
The ultimate goal is to control the seizures.
What to do if my dog is having a seizure:
1.
DO NOT PICK UP AND HOLD YOUR DOG. Leave them alone.
2. Keep calm - your dog needs you!
3. Ensure that the surroundings are safe.
- If he is on a couch or bed (off the floor), stand in front of the dog to ensure he does not fall off.
- If his head is hitting the floor lay your hand between the head and the floor for cushion.
- Ensure nothing is restraining the dog such as a collar or leash.
4. Look at the clock and track what time the seizure starts and ends
ALERT: When no one is home to supervise your dog, it is important that he be crated for safety reasons. A plastic crate is preferred as his limbs cannot get stuck between the wire and break his bones if he seizes while crated. It is better to be crated than fall off the couch or bed during a seizure.
What to do once the seizure is over
*DOCUMENT EVERYTHING:
1. What day and time the seizure happened.
2. How long the seizure lasted, if you remembered to look at the clock. (Unfortunately we are so horrified by what is happening, we often do not look at the clock. BUT this part is critical because what may only be 30 seconds to us feels like minutes.)
3. What the body did during the seizure (legs tightened, facial twitches, loss of bladder, foam at the month, etc).
Be as detailed as possible.
4. What side effects occurred once the seizure was over (could not walk, went blind for 15 mins, acted normal as if nothing happened, drank a bowl of water, etc).
Be as detailed as possible.
5. What activities did the dog experience within the 24 hours leading up to the seizure.
6. Call your vet and report the seizure so they have documentation.
What to expect when my dog has had two or more seizures in a 30 day period
1. Schedule a visit with the vet, sooner than later.
2. Basic bloodwork will be required prior to starting any medication. At this point medication needs to be started. (Phenobarbital is the most common drug in these cases.)
3. Once your dog is placed on seizure medication, he will remain on the medication for the rest of his life.
- At some point you may find that phenobarbital is not enough; this is when potassium bromide may be added.
- Sad note: unfortunately, it will be seizures or resulting complications that will ultimately take your pet's life. The meds will no longer work and you will not be able to control the seizures.
ALERT: giving your dog his seizure medication at the proper time each day is critical. Being one hour late in giving him his medication or doubling up because you missed a dose can result in additional seizure(s).
Testing
Because there are so many potential underlying causes of seizures, the workup must be step-wise and thorough. A comprehensive attempt to identify the possible culprits compares disorders originating within the brain (tumors; viral, bacterial or parasitic infections; strokes; head trauma) from those originating outside the brain. For instance, nutritional deficiencies as well as toxins like lead, insecticides, moldy foods and some human supplements can provoke brain changes that lead to seizures. Additionally, metabolic abnormalities such as liver or kidney disease can cause seizures, and some anesthetic agents and medications may also trigger them in sensitive animals.
Bostons and seizures
Unfortunately, seizures are very common in the breed. A majority fall under the category of idiopathic (cause unknown) epilepsy. If the dog is less than one year of age, he is more likely to have a congenital abnormality, and if he's older than five, specific disorders of the brain are more common. For Bostons, the most common reason is a brain tumor.

Molly came into our lives almost one year ago. She'd been through a lot in a short time. She was nervous, and it was clear she wasn't real sure about me or my family when we met.
She got along with her new canine brother Angus right off the bat. However, when it was time to see the inside of her new house, we weren't sure if we were going to be able to get her inside. The first few weeks she stuck to me like glue and was weary of the rest of the family. As far as she was concerned, guests were not allowed in the house.
Fast forward 11 months: She loves all of her new family, and she has taken it upon herself to be the neighborhood watch. Angus is her trusty sidekick.
We were able to have two Christmas celebrations at our house (something we didn't know if we would be able to do). She did really well with all the people and the commotion. Molly loved Christmas. She and her brother Angus got spoiled rotten. Funny...I don't remember them being that good. Ha ha.
Molly is showing everyone what a sweet, silly girl she is.
Last year on her birthday (January 19th), Molly had recently left the breeder and was at a vet ready to be fixed. This year we are going to throw her a birthday party and make sure she is spoiled.

Q: What should I dog if I find a stray dog or my dog goes missing?
A:
If you find a stray
please take the following action even if the dog's conditions are not good, as you do not know how long the dog has been missing, and his owner may be looking for him.
- Have the dog scanned for a chip, which any vet or shelter can do at no cost.
- Report the dog as found to both local animal control and shelters, and make sure to leave your name and number so you can be contacted. *ALERT: Ask for the hold period, as a dog is not allowed to move out of the area prior to the hold period expiring. If not claimed in that period of time, the dog becomes the property of the finder. (For towns with no animal control, report to your local police.)
- Check Craigslist "lost and found" section.
- Share with your local rescue in case they are aware of a missing dog.
If your dog goes missing please take the following action:
- Call your microchip company and validate that the phone numbers on the registration are correct.
- Report the dog as MISSING to local animal control and shelter, and make sure to leave your name and number so you can be contacted.(For towns with no animal control report to your local police.)
- Create a post on Craigslist "lost and found" section. Include photo and phone number.
- Share with your local rescue should so they can post to Facebook.

As many of you know MABTR covers 13 states. 75% of our adoptions occur between foster homes and adopters in different states, requiring MABTR to set up a transport by car. We do not fly our dogs.
Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car so we ask that you share with us your travel plan should you have room for a Boston to hitch a ride.
Just some examples, and not limited to, of routes completed. Note that some routes are short distances where others a whole day:

- Omaha, NE to St Louis, MO
- Omaha, NE to Boise, ID
- Des Moines, IA to St Paul, MN

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

Why you aren't seeing our Facebook Posts
Have you noticed that you aren't seeing our Facebook posts very often? Well it's not just you! Due to changes in the way Facebook works, less and less of our posts are showing up on your timelines. If fact, less than 5% of you see our posts daily! And sadly, this means you are missing a lot of our amazing rescue stories and videos!
The good news is Facebook has created a way around this using new settings.
Read the instructions below, go to our Facebook page and update your settings on your desktop or mobile device so you won't miss a thing!
- Visit our FB page - https://www.facebook.com/MABTR/
- Make sure you have clicked the "LIKE" button on our page.
- Click the "Follow" button.
- Under the "Following" drop down menu, select "See First" in your news feed.
- Under the "Following" drop down menu, select "On" for notifications.
And last but not least, be sure to routinely "Like", "Share" and "Comment" on our page. If Facebook doesn't see that you are interacting with our posts, they will remove us from your Facebook Feed.
