Communication is important but often taken for granted. All of us have been babbling since the moment we were born. As adults, it's only when we stumble in our efforts to communicate, or are exposed to an individual who is having difficulty communicating with us, do we begin to understand the complexity of the process.

This one-hour seminar will explore:
  • the problems/issues you currently face regarding communication in your organization;
  • the relevance of communication in business;
  • the components of communication, including the process, modes, obstacles and strategies;
  • the "used car" concept as it applies to company employees; and,
  • your role in addressing all the issues identified.

bankHometown CEO To Retire

Hewitt bankHometown announced today (January 5, 2018) that Michael D. Hewitt, its President and Chief Executive Officer, has decided to retire on June 30, 2018. Sam S. Pappas, Chairman of the Board, stated that "We have been very fortunate to have Mike Hewitt as the leader of our Bank since 2013. His vast banking experience and strong leadership will be missed by us all. We wish Mike all the best in retirement."

Mike Hewitt joined the Bank in 2011 and was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in 2013. The Bank has more than doubled in size under his leadership and is widely considered to be one of the best performing banks in the region. Mr. Hewitt added that "I have truly enjoyed my time at bankHometown. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to work closely with the dedicated professionals on bankHometown's Board of Directors over the past five years. It goes without saying that I will miss my daily interactions with bankHometown's exceptionally talented staff and management team. With that said, after 40 years in banking, I am excited to turn my attention to spending more time with my family."

To provide continuity and maintain the Bank's strategic direction, the bankHometown Board of Directors has chosen to fill Mike Hewitt's role with Matthew S. Sosik, the President and Chief Executive Officer of bankHometown's mutual holding company. Mr. Pappas added that "This decision maximizes our flexibility and leaves many strategic opportunities available to us. Matt formerly served as President and Chief Executive Officer of bankHometown for a period of 17 years up until 2013. We are fortunate to have someone with the familiarity and experience with bankHometown who can seamlessly fill Mike's role upon his retirement."

bankHometown is headquartered in Oxford, Massachusetts and has $735 million in assets. In 2016, bankHometown merged its mutual holding company with that of bankESB, a $1.35 billion bank headquartered in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The two banks are now both subsidiaries of Hometown Financial Group, MHC, a $2.2 billion mutual holding company. The two banks operate autonomously and share many of their back office and administrative resources. Mr. Sosik stated that "We are committed to mutuality and strongly believe in the value of our mutual holding company model. We hope to attract other like-minded banks into our growing and successful company as scale and size have become critical elements of being successful in today's banking environment." Sosik further added that "As excited as I am about the future of our mutual holding company and our two affiliate banks, I am truly excited for Mike on his upcoming and well deserved retirement. Mike is a great banker, but he's an even better person, and all of us wish him the very best in his retirement later this year."

bankHometown has served its communities since 1889 and operates thirteen full service offices; eight in central Massachusetts and five located in northeastern Connecticut. Depositors of bankHometown have their deposits insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for amounts up to $250,000 with amounts in excess of $250,000 insured in full by the Share Insurance Fund, a private excess insurer.

Survey Proves Eagles Love The Last Green Valley
Eagles Survey Team
Eagles Survey Team 2018

For the eighth year The Last Green Valley assisted the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in its Midwinter Eagle Survey. The Last Green Valley's Chief Ranger, Bill Reid, organizes the group of volunteers in the 26 Connecticut towns of the National Heritage Corridor.

The Last Green Valley, Inc., (TLGV) is the non-profit charged with promoting and advocating for The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor's unique resources.

On January 13, 29 volunteers surveyed 31 locations. The number of volunteers was down due to weather concerns. Despite decreased participation, the number of eagle sitings increased. There were 26 sightings of eagles along the Quinebaug and Shetucket rivers and several lakes and ponds, up from 12 sitings the year before.

The sitings included adult bald eagles, some of which are known to nest in the national heritage corridor, juvenile bald eagles and at least one juvenile golden eagle.

Eagle "This is a great example of citizen science," said TLGV Chief Ranger Bill Reid. "People who love and enjoy the region come together to document the eagles. These birds are good indicators of the health of our waterways and that is critical to all of us."

Reid said TLGV began participating in the survey in 2010 as a way to draw attention to the wonderful attributes of the National Heritage Corridor while showing in a tangible way how the organization's work on water quality has improved the health of area waterways, making it hospitable to the bald eagle once again.

The CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will crunch the information gathered by volunteers to determine the number of individual birds in the area. The detailed data reported by volunteers, such as exact time, location, and movement patterns are all vital pieces of the puzzle.

Nationally, the program is a project of the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division. Teams across the country observe on the same date and during the same hours to make the Midwinter Eagle Survey a national, state and regional snapshot of the health of the eagle population. Some states, such as Massachusetts, do not participate in the Midwinter Eagle Survey but conduct their own nest surveys in the spring.

Photos: Team shot taken by TLGV Ranger Wendy Brennan and eagle photo taken by Mike Nelson, vice chairman of TLGV Board of Directors.

The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor is green by day and dark by night. It is a National Heritage Corridor with a rich history in a surprising rural landscape in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington D.C. Still 77 percent forest and farm, The National Heritage Corridor is the last swath of dark night sky in the nation's most populated region. The Last Green Valley, Inc. works for you to ensure that together we can care for, enjoy and pass on The Last Green Valley.

Cornerstone Bank Supports Local Food Pantries during the Holiday Season
Cornerstone Bank
Cornerstone Bank employees load up their cars to help stock shelves for local food pantries.

During the 2017 holiday season, Cornerstone Bank and its employees donated money, food and man-hours to support the Worcester County Food Bank (WCFB).

Cornerstone Bank made a $10,000 charitable contribution to the WCFB, in support of its efforts to house and distribute food to its network of 120 partner agencies in Worcester County. These agencies, which include both food pantries and community meal programs, provide food to local families in need.

In addition, all branches of Cornerstone Bank collected non-perishable food items through the month of November to be donated to the WCFB and to help stock the shelves during the holiday season. Employees, customers and community members alike recognized the need and made sizeable donations to support their local food pantry. The Bank employees then delivered all of these food items to the WCFB.

"We are proud to see such generosity from our employees as well as from our customers," states
VP of Human Resources of Cornerstone Bank Bonnie B. Losavio. "The local food pantries do a
great job providing needed items to deserving families and we are happy we could help stock
some of their shelves and provide support to the Worcester County Food Bank."

The Worcester County Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in Worcester County. In 2017, the WCFB distributed 5.8 million pounds of food, enough food for 93,000 meals per week, and assisted over 82,000 people, including 27,500 children and 10,300 senior citizens. For more information on the WCFB, go to www.foodbank.org.

Later he visited Jenny and the Palmer branch staff, who were proudly supporting the New England Patriots playing in the AFC Championship game by wearing team apparel, to collect his $100 gift certificate to the Steaming Tender Restaurant in Palmer, MA.

Sturbridge Rotary Supports Local United Way

Rotary Supports UW Mary O'Coin, Executive Director of the United Way of Southbridge, Sturbridge and Charlton (UWSSC), attended a recent Club meeting.  She briefly reviewed the history of the local United Way, currently celebrating its 80th year.  We learned about the wide variety of needed services provided in the Tri-Community area by the 17 non-profit partner agencies that UWSSC funds that cover 25 separate programs.  Besides volunteering each year during the United Way 'Day of Caring', Sturbridge Rotary also gave Mary a donation to help support the much-needed work of UWSSC.  Shown with Mary (center) is Rotarian Pauline White who is a volunteer with United Way and Rotary President David Zonia.

After a successful run last year, Midwinter Mischief returns to Old Sturbridge Village this January and February! Midwinter Mischief combines theatrical storytelling, historical interpretation and period dining to offer guests a daytime winter adventure...

Imagine the tale of a Yankee peddler passing through the village who decides to settle down at the Bullard Tavern on a cold winter's night. There the peddler spends every dollar he has earned on food and drink, racking up a tab far beyond his means. After being confronted over his debt, the peddler fills up his cup with ashes from the hearth and promises the tavern owner that he will return with a cup overflowing of gold. From the Bullard Tavern, costumed storytellers, artisans, and villagers will entice tavern guests to wander deep into the village where they will find evidence of the peddler's adventures and schemes.

Admission to a Midwinter Mischief includes the two-hour outdoor/indoor experience and a period-inspired meal in the Village's Bullard Tavern where guests can enjoy live music, demonstrations, and a cash bar featuring hot beverages and 1830s-inspired libations. Each day, the first experience departs the Visitor Center at 9:00 am and the last at 3:00 pm, with experiences beginning every 20 minutes (except for noon and 12:20). After your adventure, you will be led to the Bullard Tavern Great Room where you can enjoy your inclusive hearty soup or stew meal.

Midwinter Mischief was written and directed by P.J. Griffith.

Timed tickets must be purchased in advance - either online at www.osv.org or at the museum's Visitor Center.

Bethel Heights Vineyard Wine Dinner
February 12, 7:00-9:00pm

Bethel Heights Vineyard grows its grapes on 103 acres in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The family-owned winery is an Oregon pioneer, founded in 1977, and all its wines are produced from estate-owned vineyards.

Ben Casteel, co-owner and winemaker, pursues a light and delicate style, decidedly old-school, putting the emphasis on fruit flavors and intensity and delivering a marvelous sense of weightlessness in the wines. The winery specializes in Pinot Noir and was declared Best Oregon Winery 2017 at the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Extraordinary Winery Award ceremony in New York on October 30, 2017 and was also recently listed as one of 30 wineries to trust by Wine Spectator.

To complement and enhance the evening's wine parings, Head Chef, Nick Faucher, will prepare a four-course gastronomique experience that will surely delight the most discerning pallet and will be remembered for some time to come. The price of the wine dinner is $75 per person and includes all wine and food parings. Tax and gratuity are not included.

We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail alexandra_mcnitt@cmschamber.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
