THE CHURCH THAT RISKS ITS LIFE
Earlier this month, my next-door neighbor committed suicide. In just the ten years I had known him, Ron (not his real name) had borne more suffering than most people. His teenage daughter died of accidental alcohol poisoning, and his marriage failed shortly afterward. Several years later, Ron's girlfriend died during a routine surgery. A few years after that, a girlfriend died in a car accident. Those losses were the demons that Ron disclosed. Only he knows what else might have weighed so heavily that he chose to end his life.

REST IN PEACE, REV. RICK CARUS
Rev. Rick Carus, a leader of the Presbyterian Church (USA) with deep roots in the Milwaukee Presbytery and the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, passed away on January 29. A memorial service will be held at Apostle Presbyterian Church (1509 S. 76th Street, West Allis, WI 53214) on Thursday February 1 at 3 PM. It will be an opportunity to celebrate his life and service to the Lord and his entry into the Church Triumphant. A simple coffee reception will be held in fellowship hall following the service. I write the summer curriculum and help train the counselors, Bill teaches sailing and offers counsel and encouragement in his inimitable way. I am a sophomore at Reagan IB High School in Milwaukee, where all 10
th graders are required to complete a Personal Project. I have chosen to support the Worldwide Hunger Relief organization by collecting new and gently-used CLEAN prom and homecoming dresses and shoes to send to the girls who live on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. (Larger sizes are especially needed.) If you are able to bring any donations to your churches by February 4
