National Youth Orchestra Conductor Apprenticeship

National Youth Orchestra of the USA (NYO-USA)
is currently seeking applications for two apprentice conductor positions with NYO-USA for 2018, from students between 16-19 as of July 2018 (the same age as instrumentalists in the orchestra).

The invited young conductors will spend three weeks with NYO-USA during its residency at Purchase College and then join the orchestra's Asia tour, Michael Tilson Thomas and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. At Purchase they will be mentored by the program's conducting staff, headed by James Ross and including residency conductor Joseph Young and assistant conductor Ruth Reinhardt. They will have some podium time leading NYO-USA in both a "conducting lab" and during a full rehearsal, conducting a brief extract from the orchestra's 2018 program. They will have opportunities to observe a range of instrumental faculty coach the musicians and to work with NYO-USA apprentice composers and composition faculty, as well as the library and administrative staff.

Other details about the apprenticeship and application requirements may be found here.

The apprenticeship program also includes positions for two composers, an orchestra manager, and a music librarian.

The application deadline for all apprenticeships is January 12, 2018.

National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute

Every summer, approximately 60 students (ages 15-20) from all over the United States, as well as a number of other countries, meet in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center to attend the National Symphony Orchestra's
Summer Music Institute (SMI). The program is designed to expose and prepare students for a 21st century music career while giving them direct access to NSO musicians through private lessons, coachings, side-by-side rehearsals and more!

Each student accepted into the program attends on scholarship, which includes housing, lessons, and local transportation; sometimes provided by WC/NSO, during their stay. Round-trip transportation to and from Washington, DC is not included. Additionally, a stipend for cost of food during the institute is not provided.

San Diego Foundation's Common Scholarship

Through the San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program, San Diego County students can receive the financial assistance they need to pursue their educational goals. As the largest private non-university scholarship provider in the county, the Community Scholarship Program operates more than 160 funds and awarded in excess of $2.7 million to more than 900 students last year alone.

Other San Diego Foundation Scholarships include opportunities for aspiring teachers, active military residents and women in science and technology, among many others. We also encourage students to seek out Local Scholarships exclusively offered through other regional organizations. By providing students with financial support to further their education, together, we help launch bright careers and grow a vibrant region.
