SEED experts traveled to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto for a week of exchanges on cybersecurity and innovation with Japanese counterparts 

From December 9-16, Sasakawa USA partnered with the Center for a New American Security to take a cohort of seven rising U.S. cybersecurity experts and technology entrepreneurs for a week-long study trip to Japan. Dr. Dan Kliman, CNAS Asia-Pacific Security Program Senior Fellow, led the delegation. Other participants included representatives from the defense industry, financial and technlogy sectors, consulting firms, and civil society organizations.

During the week, the delegation met with Japanese experts in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto to discuss shared cybersecurity challenges, the innovation ecosystem in Japan, and ways to deepen U.S. Japan cooperation around these topics.

Announcement: Three alumni selected to join the Sasakawa USA In-Depth Research Trip to Japan in February

The Sasakawa USA In-Depth Research Trip provides selected alumni an opportunity to return to Japan for a deeper understanding of common challenges in the U.S.-Japan relationship. The 2017-2018 participants will travel to Japan in February for a week to conduct independent research. 

This year, Sasakawa USA is sending Sharon Burke, Senior Advisor to New America; Grace Clegg, Projects and Outreach Coordinator at the East-West Center in Washington D.C.; and Tarak Shah, who previously served as the Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Science and Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. 
                    
News: Sasakawa USA Journalism Fellows publish in 
the  New York Times and E&E News 

Seth Berkman, Sasakawa USA 2017 Journalism Fellow, published his first two articles based on his time in Japan on December 1 and December 29 in the New York Times. The first article, "In Japan, Ohtani is a Special Player but Definitely Not Babe Ruth," profiles Japanese baseball player Shohei Otani, while the second,"Would You Play Ball at Fukushima?" focuses on sports in Fukushima. Berkman also wrote about his reporting process for the Ohtani story in an article for the Sasakawa USA blog He is also working on an article about the 2020 Olympics. 

Umair Irfan, Sasakawa USA 2016 Journalism Fellow, published his final fellowship article for E&E News on January 2. Irfan's article, "Architects tackle emissions in a culture that discards homes," looked at the need for sustainability in Japan's buildings.
    
Event Recap: U.S, Japanese and Korean students connected for Fifth Trilateral Symposium on January 4

Future leaders in U.S.-Japan-Korea trilateral cooperation had the opportunity to discuss their views on digital diplomacy and workplace challenges at the Fifth U.S.-Japan-Korea Trilateral Symposium in Washington D.C. on January 4. The International Student Conferences (ISC) and Sasakawa USA partnered for this event where student leaders alongside senior experts discussed key present-day topics directly relevant to the U.S., Japan and Korea.

In the News: C-Span live streams symposium, Admiral Blair speaks to Financial Times, and TTX analyzed in the Diplomat 

C-Span live streamed the 5th U.S.-Japan Korea Trilateral Symposium on January 4: In opening remarks, Sasakawa USA CEO Ambassador James Zumwalt talked about the trilateral relationship between Korea, Japan and the United States. "From the perspective of the United States, these are not two separate alliances. It's really one network of obligations and responsibilities that we face together," Ambassador Zumwalt said. Admiral Blair quoted in Financial Times articles: Sasakawa USA Chairman Admiral Dennis Blair was quoted on the subject of North Korea in two articles published in the Financial Times on January 9. Admiral Blair commented on the potential military actions the U.S. could take in North Korea as well as the chances that the January 9 inter-Korea talks would be successful.  For a summary and links to the articles, read " Analysis of North Korea: Admiral Blair Speaks to the Financial Times ."

Sasakawa USA TTX Reviewed in the Diplomat: Richard H. Ledgett, retired Deputy Director for the National Security Agency, analyzed the results of Sasakawa USA's recent tabletop exercise (TTX) in a piece, "Preparing for Cyber Attacks on Japan," published in the Diplomat on December 19. In the article, Ledgett highlighted the TTX's results, noting that the Japanese are clearly taking the cyber threat seriously. The exercise, which Ledgett helped lead, simulated cyber attacks on Japan's forthcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Japanese Maritime Assistance: A Status Quo Plus: Kerry Lynn Nankivell explains why Japan's institutional and political contexts militate against unilateralism or militarism, even as Japan expands its maritime security capacity, in the latest article from the Maritime Awareness Project (MAP). MAP is a joint project run by Sasakawa USA and the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR).
 

Event Recap: Asia's Nuclear Challenge: North Korea, China, and the Role of Extended Deterrence

On January 9, Sasakawa USA hosted Dr. Ken Jimbo, Associate Professor at Keio University, and Sayuri Romei, Associate Fellow for Security and Foreign Affairs at Sasakawa USA, for a policy lunch discussion on "Asia's Nuclear Challenge: North Korea, China, and the Role of Extended Deterrence." The discussion was moderated by Sasakawa USA CEO Ambassador James Zumwalt

News: Sasakawa USA staff provide expert testimony and briefings to Congress

Sasakawa USA staff were on the Hill this week for several Congressional briefings and meetings Sasakawa USA Chairman Admiral Dennis Blair testified about potential Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) reforms. Admiral Blair, with  Sasakawa USA CEO Ambassador James Zumwalt , Sasakawa Senior Fellow Dan Bob , and Sasakawa USA Congressional Relations Manager Christopher Dockreybriefed a bi-partisan group of 16 Congressional staff on North Korea.

California Native Bruce Huebner fell in love with the shakuhachi flute as a young man, and in the subsequent decades he has become an accomplished composer, performer and teacher of the traditional Japanese woodwind instrument. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Huebner has used his music to aid in recovery efforts and connect with people affected by the disaster.
