SEED experts traveled to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto for a week of exchanges on cybersecurity and innovation with Japanese counterparts
From December 9-16, Sasakawa USA partnered with the Center for a New American Security to take a cohort of seven rising U.S. cybersecurity experts and technology entrepreneurs for a week-long study trip to Japan. Dr. Dan Kliman, CNAS Asia-Pacific Security Program Senior Fellow, led the delegation. Other participants included representatives from the defense industry, financial and technlogy sectors, consulting firms, and civil society organizations.
During the week, the delegation met with Japanese experts in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto to discuss shared cybersecurity challenges, the innovation ecosystem in Japan, and ways to deepen U.S. Japan cooperation around these topics.

Announcement: Three alumni selected to join the Sasakawa USA In-Depth Research Trip to Japan in February
The Sasakawa USA In-Depth Research Trip provides selected alumni an opportunity to return to Japan for a deeper understanding of common challenges in the U.S.-Japan relationship. The 2017-2018 participants will travel to Japan in February for a week to conduct independent research.
This year, Sasakawa USA is sending Sharon Burke, Senior Advisor to New America; Grace Clegg, Projects and Outreach Coordinator at the East-West Center in Washington D.C.; and Tarak Shah, who previously served as the Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Science and Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Event Recap: U.S, Japanese and Korean students connected for Fifth Trilateral Symposium on January 4
Future leaders in U.S.-Japan-Korea trilateral cooperation had the opportunity to discuss their views on digital diplomacy and workplace challenges at the Fifth U.S.-Japan-Korea Trilateral Symposium in Washington D.C. on January 4. The International Student Conferences (ISC) and Sasakawa USA partnered for this event where student leaders alongside senior experts discussed key present-day topics directly relevant to the U.S., Japan and Korea.

In the News: C-Span live streams symposium, Admiral Blair speaks to Financial Times, and TTX analyzed in the Diplomat
C-Span live streamed the 5th U.S.-Japan Korea Trilateral Symposium on January 4: In opening remarks, Sasakawa USA CEO Ambassador James Zumwalt talked about the trilateral relationship between Korea, Japan and the United States. "From the perspective of the United States, these are not two separate alliances. It's really one network of obligations and responsibilities that we face together," Ambassador Zumwalt said. Admiral Blair quoted in Financial Times articles: Sasakawa USA Chairman Admiral Dennis Blair was quoted on the subject of North Korea in two articles published in the Financial Times on January 9. Admiral Blair commented on the potential military actions the U.S. could take in North Korea as well as the chances that the January 9 inter-Korea talks would be successful.

Sasakawa USA TTX Reviewed in the Diplomat: Richard H. Ledgett, retired Deputy Director for the National Security Agency, analyzed the results of Sasakawa USA's recent tabletop exercise (TTX) in a piece, "Preparing for Cyber Attacks on Japan," published in the Diplomat on December 19. In the article, Ledgett highlighted the TTX's results, noting that the Japanese are clearly taking the cyber threat seriously. The exercise, which Ledgett helped lead, simulated cyber attacks on Japan's forthcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup.

MAP is a joint project run by Sasakawa USA and the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR).

On January 9, Sasakawa USA hosted Dr. Ken Jimbo, Associate Professor at Keio University, and Sayuri Romei, Associate Fellow for Security and Foreign Affairs at Sasakawa USA, for a policy lunch discussion on "Asia's Nuclear Challenge: North Korea, China, and the Role of Extended Deterrence." The discussion was moderated by Sasakawa USA CEO Ambassador James Zumwalt.

California Native Bruce Huebner fell in love with the shakuhachi flute as a young man, and in the subsequent decades he has become an accomplished composer, performer and teacher of the traditional Japanese woodwind instrument. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Huebner has used his music to aid in recovery efforts and connect with people affected by the disaster.
