Steven Stanley Checked-In to a Cool Job
Steven Stanley's job is cool because he is in the business of creating positive memories for the guests who choose to stay in the hotels he manages.
Speaking from his home base at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Marriott in South Hill, he said, "If I can get them to stay here once, I can get them back."
Stanley's career in the hospitality industry began 25 years ago when he worked for the Holiday Inn owned by Emmett Williams. During that time in 1993, he worked and attended Southside Virginia Community College on a part-time basis. His advisor at the College, Dr. Terry Whisnant, encouraged him to take a few classes at a time, not to rush the college experience since he was also working full time. Stanley said this great advice helped him to be successful at SVCC.

Willie J. Crawley Scholarship Established
Friends and family of Willie Crawley honored his memory with the establishment of the Willie J. Crawley Memorial Scholarship. In 1997, Willie joined the SVCC family as an instructor in the Truck Driver Training School, a position he held until declining health forced his retirement during late 2016. Willie passed away suddenly on June 29, 2017.
During his tenure, he helped to educate more than 2,000 professional truck drivers. According to Duncan Quicke, Coordinator of the SVCC Truck Driver Training School, "He trained drivers the right way - the Willie Way. While he was not an easy instructor, he was fair in his student dealings. When he put his 'stamp of approval' on a student, the hiring company knew they were getting a qualified driver."
The Willie J. Crawley Memorial Scholarship will assist with tuition expenses for individuals who might not otherwise be able to attend the Truck Driver Training School and take advantage of one of today's most demanding professions.

Dual Enrollment Makes a Difference in Southside
Welding. Jacob Wray did not think he would enjoy welding classes but decided to take a chance through the Southside Virginia Community College Dual Enrollment Program. As a senior at Park View High School, he learned that he loved welding and now, this is what he does for a living.

A Day in the Life of a Medical Extra: Real Nurse Plays ER Nurse on TV
Recently Dr. Michelle Edmonds, Dean of Nursing, Allied Health, and Natural Science, played the role of an ER nurse extra for a TV show that was filming in the area. Dr. Edmonds had this to say about her experience: "It was a neat opportunity, but the days were long! We would work for a few hours doing the same thing over and over again to get the perfect shot and then we would sit for a few hours. It was amazing to see all of the equipment, people and choreography that goes into shooting a TV show. I would absolutely do it again and believe it or not, the producers like using real nurses because we are so natural and can make things look real!"
