A Word From Our Friends
Safety is No Accident
by Christina Boernson, CPCT,
TSS INC, Quincy, IL
According to OSHA an average of 4.1 million workers are injured at work each year and must file a worker's compensation claim
[1]. In 2013 the indirect cost of a workman's comp claim, however, are estimated at $55,000
[2]. The costs add up when temporary or new employees must be hired and trained while an injured worker is unable to perform their duties, productivity typically goes down and the bottom line suffers in the process.
Safety is no accident. It is an intentional pursuit each day in the workplace where people truly matter. By providing a safety program for your company, you can eliminate up to 75% of workplace injuries
[3]. These injuries often occur because people are not properly trained on how to use equipment, how to clean up spills, how to stand on ladders, appropriate ventilation, how to use proper body mechanics, the benefits of health and wellness, proper ergonomics, etc. These topics help employees to avoid simple errors with easy prevention that could save your business thousands of dollars in lost revenue.
Employee safety should be a top priority. As a community, the more people we have injured the less productivity occurs which can impact us all. Creating a simple plan of action and updating safety policies can save everyone time, money and resources while proving cost-effective. Implementing an internal safety awareness program can be simple with regular on-site meetings that raise awareness and demonstrate various safety topics, company-wide safety reminders via email notifications and by utilizing either webinar or classroom educational trainings that are engaging, useful, practical and fun.
Promoting safety will always cost less than a worker's comp claim, that is a fact, and a promise. For more information or questions about an effective safety program for your company, contact Rod Seals, Certified Occupational Safety Specialist with TSS INC at:
