SCOOP VESSELS CLASS 8 TRUCK HOMECOMING
Cam Thieriot Donates Historic Vehicle to the Hall of Fame
Cam Thieriot has donated ORMHOF inductee Frank 'Scoop' Vessels 1972 Class 8 Ford F-100 race truck to the Hall of Fame.  Thieriot purchased the truck at an ORMHOF benefit auction in 2014.  The truck will be added to the ORMHOF vintage off-road vehicle display at the Gold Strike in Jean, Nevada.  The display is open 24/7 and admission is free.

Frank 'Scoop' Vessels got his nickname from cleaning horse stalls at the family business, Los Alamitos Race Track. He quickly made a name for himself in off-road, and was the SCORE Rookie of the Year in 1972, capturing 30 major race victories and four points championships during his off-road career. The Vessels racing logo pays homage to his passion and love for horses, and remains one of the most distinctive logos in off-road racing history.  Frank was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007. He died in a plane crash in 2010.  Frank's wife Bonnie was appointed to the ORMHOF board of directors in 2016.

The truck was built by Charlie Haga in 1976 to compete in Baja. BFGoodrich partnered with the Vessels team to test their first generation off-road radial tire, and the truck went on to become the first truck to win an off-road race on radial tires.  The truck also used an innovative Impco LPG fueling system by Don Bass, powering the Ford 404 CID V-8, with an Art Carr race-prepped Ford C-6 automatic, and Jack Chrisman built Ford 9-inch rear end.

"We expect to have the truck ready for display in our museum at the Gold Strike in Jean, Nevada around the first of March," said ORMHOF board member Rory Ward, "It will be great to have Scoops truck back in our collection of historic off-road vehicles."

ORMHOF SUPPORTS BAJA SAE COLLEGIATE COMPETITION
Baja SAEĀ® consists of competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. The first event was held by the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE ) in 1976. Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain.  Each team's goal is to design and build a single-seat, all-terrain, sporting vehicle whose structure contains the driver. The vehicle is to be a prototype for a reliable, maintainable, ergonomic, and economic production vehicle which serves a recreational user market.
a
The object of the competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenging project that involves the design, planning and manufacturing tasks found when introducing a new product to the consumer industrial market. Teams compete against one another to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team to not only design, build, test, promote, and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, but also to generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities.  All vehicles are powered by a ten-horsepower engine donated by Briggs & Stratton. Use of the same engine by all the teams creates a more challenging engineering design test.
aa
ORMHOF is supporting University of Nevada-Reno based Wolf Pack Racing, in their first ever Baja SAE Competition. The team is based out of UNR's Mechanical Engineering Department.  Just getting accepted to the competition was the team's first challenge; the event filled up with the limit of 100 teams almost immediately, and has a wait list of over 60 teams. Now the team is looking ahead to the challenges of designing, building, and financing their project, ahead of the competition May 30-June 2 in Portland, Oregon.  The team's primary goal for their first competition is to build a vehicle that will pass the rigorous technical inspection. They are currently raising funds to purchase materials. If you'd like to help, contact the team here.
CHECKERS OFF ROAD RACING TEAM HONORS
FRANK DE ANGELO WITH VIC VAN ELLA AWARD
Frank DeAngelo
Congratulations to ORMHOF inductee and board member Frank DeAngelo, on receiving the prestigious Vic Van Ella award from The Checkers Off Road Racing Team.
aa
For the past 39 years (40 this year) Frank has been working for BFGoodrich Tires as either an employee or motorsports agency representative supporting, planning, and implementing many of their marketing and motorsports activities.

The Checkers Off Road Racing Team has a long history with the BFGoodrich Pit Team, going all the way back to 1975 when the Checkers were formed and BFGoodrich was invited by Sal Fish to attend its first Baja race.   BFGoodrich liked what it saw, and felt the Baja races would be a perfect real-life testing ground for its new Radial All-Terrain tires. KING OF THE HAMMERS WEEK
February 2-10, 2018
Johnson Valley, in the southern California desert, turns into 'Burning Man for gear heads' for one week every winter, with the much anticipated return of King of the Hammers. The event was founded by ORMHOF board member Dave Cole (above).  Now in it's 12th year, King of the Hammers has become one of the most popular events on the off-road racing calendar.

ORMHOF inductee Shannon Campbell won this third KOH crown in 2017, coming across the finish line on three wheels, winning the race by a mere 28 seconds. Originally an event for Ultra4 cars--specially built four wheel drive vehicles with origins in Jeeps and rock buggies--King of the Hammers has added classes for other types of vehicles, including motorcycles and UTVs. PARTING SHOT: REMEMBERING CHAD RAGLAND
It is with deep sadness that we report our friend and fellow racer, Chad W. Ragland, son of ORMHOF inductee Larry Ragland, has passed away.  Chad was diagnosed with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, in May of 2017.  He leaves behind a wife and two young sons.  Chad requested that people join the National Marrow Donor Program, saying "I really want to encourage people to register with bethematch.org ... you have the power to possibly save someone else's life."
