CHILDREN'S MUSEUM AT LA HABRA CELEBRATES 40 YEARS

The Children's Museum at La Habra is celebrating its 40th anniversary.  When it  opened in December 1977 in the city's historic 1923 Train Depot, the Children's Museum at La Habra was 1 of only a few such museums open on the West Coast.  Today, The Children's Museum at La Habra annually provides 95,000 children, their parents and teachers with 10,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits about the arts, sciences, other cultures and everyday life.  The Museum features 7 hands-on galleries, many of which remain unique to the field today. In addition to these exhibits, an outdoor dinosaur garden and historic 1942 caboose, the Museum features an exhibit which changes two times a year.  More details here.
BACKHAUSDANCE MAKES JOYCE THEATER DEBUT IN NYC

Orange County's Backhausdance is currently in New York at the invitation of The Joyce Theater, a premier venue for dance in The Big Apple, where is is performing for two evenings.  On the bill is its work "The Elasticity of the Almost" (pictured above) choreographed by the company's artistic director Jennifer Backhaus. During the week, the company will also be showcased at the annual convention of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. Read more about it here in the OC Register.
OC FLUTIST NICOLE MITCHELL AT NYC JAZZFEST THIS WEEK

Celebrated jazz flutist Nicole Mitchell, who grew up in Anaheim and currently is on the faculty of UCI's Claire Trevor School of the Arts, is a featured performer at the Winter Jazzfest in New York this week.  Mitchell is widely considered one of the best flutists in the world of jazz, receiving  the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts 2011, being named "the most important jazz flutist of her generation," (AllAboutJazz) and being awarded Top Flutist by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association (2010, 2011). She was featured as a performer in the 2013 Orange County Arts Awards.  Read more about her here in the New York Times.

CAC Grant Deadlines  - January 23 & February 7
Grant season is in full swing at the CAC! Application deadlines are almost here for the Artists in Communities and Arts Education Extension programs (Jan. 23), plus a February deadline less than a month away for Cultural Pathways, JUMP StArts, and Statewide and Regional Networks (Feb. 7). NEA "Art Works" Grants Deadline February 15
Art Works, the National Endowment for the Arts' chief grant program, is now accepting applications for large or small artistically excellent projects that celebrate America's creativity and cultural heritage, invite dialogue for diverse beliefs and values, and broaden our understanding as individuals and as a society. Grants are available in a variety of disciplines and award amounts range from $10,000 to $100,000.  More details here.
City of Santa Ana Grants
Deadline - February 5

The City of Santa Ana announces the availability of approximately $792,635 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for nonprofit organizations. 
APPLICATIONS ARE DUE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2018 BY 5:00PM.
APPLICANTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A MANDATORY CDBG WORKSHOP  at City Hall, 20 Civic Center Plaza, Ross Annex, Room 1600, on the following dates:  January 16, 9 am; January 18, 9 am; January 23, 6 pm; January 25, 2 pm.   More details here.
Grants to High Schools for their Theatre Programs - Deadline February 1

Inspired by the network's upcoming Jason Katims drama "Rise," which premieres Tuesday, March 13 and follows the effects a high school theatre department has on its surrounding community, NBC is launching R.I.S.E. America, a program that grants a half-million dollars to high school theatre programs across the country. R.I.S.E. (Recognizing and Inspiring Student Expression) America will award 50 high schools a $10,000 grant that will enable them to enhance or revitalize their theatre programs. The winning schools can use the grant money to cover various critical needs, including master classes and production expenses.
