Dear Friends of Shoals Marine Laboratory,

“It was a happy thought to bring. To the dark season’s frost and rime. This painted memory of spring, this dream of summer-time.” – John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) , member of the Appledore Art Colony and renowned American poet

One of the great pleasures of working at Shoals Marine Laboratory is that the vibrancy of summer is never far from my mind, even in the quiet slumber of New England winter. Last weekend, I spoke to a wonderful crowd at the Isles of Shoals Historical and Research Association (ISHRA) Annual Meeting. I spoke about tern chicks and swarming gulls. I could almost hear that “cack cack cack” of an incoming, diving tern protecting her chicks.

Plans are underway here on the mainland for summer 2018 at SML. Innovative new courses and internships and exciting outreach programs are all in the works. YOU make this possible! I am thrilled to announce that we reached our 2017 SML Fund goal of $250,000!

Your generosity and support is what inspires and enables SML staff and faculty to make SML programs engaging and pioneering, year after year. You are the reason SML can provide outstanding experiential, place-based education and innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment. On behalf of SML's staff and faculty, thank you, THANK YOU! We're excited for all that 2018 will bring, and we look forward to sharing our successes along the way!
With deep appreciation and warm wishes,
Jennifer Seavey, Ph.D.

Marine Ecological Genomics Course Coming to SML!
This summer, we will be offering a new undergraduate course: Marine Ecological Genomics (May 28 – June 11, 2018). You may remember reading about our Genomics Internship in newsletters from summer 2016. Building off the success of that internship, Dr. David Plachetzki (Assistant Professor in UNH's Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Biomedical Sciences) has designed a Marine Ecological Genomics course that provides immersive training in emerging practices in marine ecological genomics research.

Dr. Plachetzki’s course will combine field components with an introduction to common genomics approaches including: next generation sequence analysis, phylogenomics, differential gene expression, and population genomics. Students in the course will come away with a better understanding of the application of genetic variation within and between species, and how it can be used to better understand ecological and evolutionary processes.

Scientist-in-Residence Fellows
SML is currently accepting applications for this summer's Scientist-in-Residence Fellowship (SIRF) program on Appledore Island. The SIRF program supports two early-career scientists by providing financial support for residential research time that can be used for data analysis, manuscript preparation, experimentation, and collaboration, among others. Fellows become an integral part of SML's undergraduate research internship program by supporting and mentoring interns, while simultaneously enhancing the research breadth at SML with their own expertise.

Priority will be given to one postdoctoral researcher and one assistant professor. The deadline to apply is February 15, 2018.
